Viktor Bogdanovic is one of my favorite artists and to see his work in this story is one of the main reasons I picked it up and decided to give it a read. Bogdanovic's style and the way he crafts both a scene and how those characters interact with it is brilliant. Given that Alpha issues are often for completists only, Spencer and Bogdonavic deliver some superb work for 2099 Alpha #1, in part because they're able to flesh out this futuristic world just as much as the characters that reside in it. Spencer has ably constructed a strong launchpad for the five upcoming 2099 one-shots, and thanks to some sterling production values from Bodgonavic and Gracia, you'll enjoy this narrative that connects them all. 2099 Alpha is a visually beautiful book that sets the stage for future action. Readers will more likely be pulled into the narratives of the individual titles, but Nick Spencer has proven that he can craft a complex narrative. Sometimes those story arcs resonate with fans, as in Captain America and his current run onAmazing Spider-man, and sometimes they fall flat, likeSecret Empire.Time will tell if this is more of the former rather than the latter. For an introduction, this wasn't bad at all. As a story this was jumbled and confused, so more work needs to be devoted to helping us understand these characters and their world. That will come, hopefully. Read Full Review

Instead of setting something up to get readers onboard and excited, Nick Spencer plays the Devils Hand of mysterious, clever and confusing. Im sure most of it will make more sense down the line, but with all the choices on the shelves nowadays, you need to come out swinging. I loved the art in this issue, but not much else for now. This is a clunky and awkward first step for the 2099 storyline that'll be sweeping across miniseries. Dr. Doom positively steals the show, but nearly everything else is confusing to read, unclear who or what is going on, and hard to care about. I read ASM before this and I think it's pretty clear what is happening here, so I don't understand all the reviews saying it's confusing. It's an interesting concept to reimagine 2099 with the sensibilities of 2019, and while we didn't get into the meat of things, a lot of this does intrigue me.

It ain't bad, it's just that it's more of a preview of the tie-in oneshots than a proper introduction to the story. I'm not exactly sure what's the story here.

I'm nth-ing the opinion that this is a decent ad for future issues and a pretty sub-par comic in its own right. Also, everybody remember to carve another notch on your tally of "Marvel AUs/events where Doom rules a grim dystopia claiming he's mankind's only hope of survival."

Oh, this was pure chaos. It´s not a regular comic issue. I´ts like a series of ads without context. I like 2099 and i will probably read next one-shots, but for someone new it must be so confusing.
