It doesn't matter if you love it or hate it, you should experience it. It's such a short and sweet (bitter to some) tale that it should be felt, the keyword, without being spoiled. If you're a fan of the recently relaunched Fantastic Four series, you will likely be disappointed that Fantastic Four 2099 shares very little in common with their classic predecessors. This is a scattered, meandering read that does so little to establish its titular concept that even diehard fans will likely feel swindled - and given Marvel's other 2099 one-shots being offered in the coming days, this is one family gathering you can easily avoid. This is one of the most dismal experiences I have ever had reading any comic book. A world that I didn't like visiting, characters I didn't like meeting and didn't care about, and an overall dark and nihilistic worldview combined to make me wish I hadn't taken on the task of reviewing this thing. I enjoyed this more than some it seems. It reminded me a lot of 2000AD Future Shocks which is never a bad thing in my books. I can even see how the story could be developed afterwards. I enjoyed the world building too, including the dialogue. Makes me very intrigued to see what Karla Pacheco does with Spider-Woman.

A fairly promising "gather the new team" story takes a dark swerve in the last scene. I liked the set-up and the twist, and I thought they were built out with sound but not quite great storytelling. (Like for instance, the artist and colorist do an insanely great job creating a Mobius-esque world and then come up short when it comes to making characters emote.) As a self-contained story it's rather frustrating. But it does a bang-up job on the world-building that the Alpha issue shorted us on.

Like some What if? story ok, but like a part of new 2099 universe no. Ending was shocking, but it didnt save this issue. After bad Alpha 2099 another disappointment.

I’ll level with you: I don’t really like the Fantastic Four, and I certainly don’t like spending a whole issue getting a future version of them together to no end.

H.E.R.B.I.E. Fully Loaded, and it as lame as it sounds, but also far more boring. At least these nothing characters got moidered immediately.
