This issue brings us to the brink of despair as we don't know if Rocket will help his former teammates or not. Indeed, we don't even know if he'll survive in time to help said teammates. We're getting down to the wire and it's not looking good for our heroes. The situation becomes direr as Patriarch leads them into a chamber and shows them the length of depravity he will go through to achieve his goals. Picked up this book with yhe last issue. Rocket is one of my all time favorite superheroes so an arc called 'The Death of Rocket' was a must buy. Last issue was build up. This one hits hard. Theres a plash page that is a love letter to his character no matter how long you've been reading him. Heartbreaking dialogue too. Worth a read even if you're just a Rocket fan.

Holy Crap! This was Good!! Spoiler Alert!!!! Wow!!! The emotions brought through the words and illustrations, this went deep. As Rocket self loathing and turn to isolation from dying and not wanting to be seen or remembered on that state. Then Groot angrily upset how Rocket left without asking his friends, no family for help. That Rocket had family who 'wanted' to help. Then seeing Rocket built a FREAKIN GUNDAM!!!! To wrap it up, Peter finds the army ready to hatch. I didn't see that coming 🤯🤯🤯

The Good: Rocket's backstory. I confess I don't know much about the Guardians themselves let alone their origins but damn is Rocket's represented here extremely well. Perfectly in character and that double page spread. That was a work of art. Also talk about subverting expectations. We all thought Rocket betrayed the team in some way during a crucial point. Nope, just decided to leave. Brilliant story writing from Cates. Interactions. As always with a team book, the story lives or dies on the interactions. Like he has proven so many times already, Cates gets the Guardians and more so for this issue nails Rocket's and Groot's friendship and what Rocket means to the team. Also Cosmo and Lockjaw were hilarious. The Church of Truth. A cl assic Guardians villain who have ramped up their goals a ton. Instead of the stories of the past, they feel like threats again just like in Abnetts run. The Bad: There really is none. Only reason I'm not giving it a 10 is that I usually reserve those but boy does it come close. Conclusion: Cate's shows he knows how to write a damn great Guardians book and it's obvious here. This is most definitely a book you should pick up even if you only like one of the characters. more

Nice little filler/background issue, providing a lot of needed context and background for rocket. I do have a question tho, is that a transformer hrs going towards? LOL it looks just like Optimus prime. Which leads into my small complaint, the art just isn't as good as Geoff Shaw, which is a hard comparison.

That deathbed scene took my reaction up into "wow, this is GOAT" territory -- briefly. I can't fully explain why, but by the end of the issue, I was right back down to "enh, s'okay."

I liked the interaction between Groot and Rocket Raccoon, and the latter's little self-reflexive story. However, as with the main storyline, I would have preferred a more coherent presentation.

Rocket has 40 years of history and 10 years as a Guardian, and he STILL has to learn this lesson. Good god, writers just refuse to let these characters evolve.
