Black Cat #1

Wilson has done such a good job with DCs Poison Ivy over the years. Shes done such. compelling job showing Ivy gradually reforming into some kind of hero. Theres no question that shell be able to do something very similar with a Black Cat who turns hero. Whereas shes exploring the complexities of environmental justice in Poison Ivy, Wilson seems to be exploring a different kind of villainy-turned-good with Felicia. Writer Jed Mackay did a good job with Felicia as an action hero. Its really appealing to see a slightly more sophisticated version of the character in the hands of one of the better current mainstream comics writers. Read Full Review

Felicias back in her own solo book, and it looks like Marvel has decided to make her a full fledged hero, instead of a gray character, who floats between being a superhero or a super thief. Unfortunately the story is lacking a lot of charisma that readers have come to expect from Felicia. The art doesnt help with the story, either. Read Full Review

Fun issue and I’m open to a goofy run for Felicia but some points were too off character and corny. My biggest concern is that future writers take thing angle from now on and the character gets ruined (see Harely Quinn across the street).

If this was supposed to be a parody book then I think Wilson did a good job. Wilson is not a writer I normally purchase, but I like Black Cat, so I gave it shot. Boy was it awful. It starts with a pile of heroes and villain sitting in the waiting room of the Night Nurse. It is like the beginning of an SNL skit. Uhg.. this is a hard read and I don't want to be this negative reviewer. But there is nothing, not even the cover, that is actually good. The storytelling is extremely off, the interior art is not what it should be,... Too bad because it feels like black cat and its fanbase really deserves a strong and mysterious storyline full of surprises and upsets. Missed opportunity

Damn, I really wanted to like this as a huge black cat fan. I’m hoping next issue is better. Wilson is an amazing writer (see: Poison Ivy) but this was not a promising start. The 4th wall breaking doesn’t fit well and just seems like a lazy way to narrate. Lizard is….. just completely wrong, especially with how he is currently in continuity. (Also how can see understand his growls like they’re freaking Han and Chewie) Lastly the art was a dud. How are there 3 massive slashes on her arm bad enough to need Night nurse, but then become a job for a single band aid haha. Marvel if you need a new Spidey editor call me.

Although I’d prefer a more realistic style for Black Cat, I did enjoy the art. However, the writing is goddamn awful. One reviewer said it’s like a bad She-Hulk comic, and I can’t believe how accurate this is.
