Amazing Spider-Man #78 is a great follow-up to the last issue as Spider-Man takes on Morbius. Kelly Thompson continues to show how efficient she is with character writing and the foreboding nature of Beyond reveals a bit more of itself to the reader. Amazing Spider-Man #78 continues the Beyond storyline with some interesting setup for the next few issues. The fight between Ben Reilly and Morbius kicks off a new mystery around the Living Vampire, while showing off some more of the shady Beyond Corporation. While Morbius was treated as throwaway villain the story Kelly Thompson crafted around Ben Reilly's Spider-Man and the Beyond Corporation kept interest in this new direction high. The developments in Amazing Spider-Man #78 reinforced the foundation that the Beyond era is looking to build on. This was weird. I think Kelly Thompson did a good job with the writing, but the way Morbius was dealt with, with the security system, was very odd. I don't know what Ben thought would happen if he lured a crazed monster man towards his apartment, with its security. I guess he thought since the Beyond Corporation are such good guys, there would be some containment thing for Morbius, or something. I think that's the implication, but it's kind of confusing. The scene with MJ, Felicia and Peter is great. Best part of the book, by far. I hope this isn't the case, but it might soon become apparent that Ben Reilly's adventures just aren't nearly as interesting to the readers as anything going on with Peter. Maybe I'm in the minority on that one, t hough. The actual problem with this comic is the art. Sara Pichelli, for whatever reason, has been lacking the last few years. I don't know why. Maybe it's because Justin Ponsor used to color all her work and he unfortunately passed away from cancer back in 2019, and the colorists now just can't seem to figure out how to compliment her artwork. It's never bad, it's just disappointing. I really don't know what to expect from next issue. I'm not familiar with the creative team, but I hope it's good. more

For sure. Justin Ponsor made everyone he colored look twice as good. Just one of the best in the industry.

Yes Justin Ponsor made all art better with his colors. Sara Pichelli has two things going, her health issues with her back come and go which affects her output and deadlines and her style has changed as all artists evolve but some new things she's trying don't all land as well as her previous iterations. So it's a bit of both I think.

Again, a very fun issue. Only major complaint I have is that Sara Pichelli art here feels very rushed, not her best work, which is unfortunate because she is amazing.

So, I think I get it now: We've got 3 stories in parallel. Ben runs a gauntlet of classic Spidey foes, Pete struggles through the coma, and (hopefully) Colleen and Misty investigate Beyond. They're all in balance here. Where the previous issue swung character-heavy, this one swings the other way, advancing all the plots nicely. The art remains excellent. While it hasn't reached for greatness, this story is consistently good so far -- and that makes a welcome change from the last months of the Spencer run.

Now this was a bit odd one. It felt shorter than usual and Morbius felt especially wasted here. For a two-parter story it felt like it offered very little. But what it did offer was very good and I liked all of it. Even Pichelli's art felt better here. As much as it reminds me more of Abrams' terrible Spider-Man comic than Bendis' Miles comics. So it's good? With a question mark this time instead of definitive answer.

Thompson and Pichelli do a solid job keeping the pace moving here. I think I said it in my last review, but the Beyond Corp stuff has been my favorite part of this run, even if any possibility of them not being evil is gone.

It's a mixed bag of things working and others are just nonsensical. Thompson's dialogue in some parts sounds odd or off. Morbius was just weird all throughout with no payoff. Sara Pichelli's art wasn't bad because some scenes were fantastic and others are off. Her new style is odd to me but it has its good moments. Also she couldn't finish the whole issue so I assume her health issues aren't gone. I wish her the best!

There were parts with Morbius I liked. The black cat parts were OK but, some of the dialogue with Misty and Colleen was just bad.

Please get Thompson off the book as fast as possible, she couldn't care less about Spider-Man and it's pretty visible. There's such a stark difference between Zeb's writing and hers. The only thing she did here that I liked is that Peter reacted to Black Cat even though MJ was at his side all this time, which makes it super weird.

Yeah, I had hopes for this new direction but it’s not thrilling me at all. I love a lot of dialogue in a comic but most of the dialogue in this one is just plain bad and wasted. The art is horrible. Having Morbius show up is a plus but it can’t save the issue for me…especially since Michael is just all “Grrr…Arggh”.

Boring. The way Morbius was treated, it sucks. The MJ, Felicia and Peter part was real good. Scene would have much better with use of word "Friends" instead of love interest. Close Friends visiting is good. Have Betty and Flash appear too. It shows care one had for their friends. Jonah, Robbie, His father, Aunt Anna should also be there. What's point of building a relation between Peter and them when you aren't using them when they should be used? Art sucks here. I loved Sara Pichelli artwork during USM but here it sucks.
