Comic Book Revolution - Kevin Lainez

    Feb 17, 2022

Judging Amazing Spider-Man #89 solely on the content of the story Patrick Gleason and Mark Bagley did a great job in establishing Queen Goblin as a major threat. How Queen Goblin's introduction helped to further Peter Parker's story in the Beyond Era made his return as Spider-Man even more exciting. That said, all the great character and plot developments further highlighted how Ben Reilly, the current lead Spider-Man, is turning into the least interesting part of this series. We'll see if the next issue can bring Ben up to the level of Peter and all the other great characters in this series. Read Full Review

Amazing Spider-Man #89 shows more of the Queen Goblin in action as Black Cat steps up to fight her. However, the comic doesn't follow through on that match-up as much as expected. The artwork is good and the comic is well-written, and there's a surprise appearance that will surely excite fans and get the story rolling in the next issue. Read Full Review

Bagley drawing a whole issue of Spider-Man? I've missed that. It's odd to have two of my favourite current artists of ASM working together on a book where the other is a writer. But Gleason's script is good here. I'm a bit confused how that Goblin Gaze works but then again, this is normal comic book stuff. Overall a very good part of the Beyond storyline. But I do wanna see more Ben though...

This is a really good issue. I really like how this era of Spidey has thrust Felicia into this heroic role, and I hope that this continues into the next run. I did not miss Ben here. I'm happy to see Peter return, and his inner monologue is peak Peter, in my opinion. It's just a really enjoyable read, which makes up for that lacking Slingers tie-in last week.

Holy crap, this issue was amazing (no pun intended)! Queen Goblin is not the greatest character, but her hypnotic Goblin Gaze is a genius thing: Bagley's art of Felicia's negative thoughts was fantastic and it helps characterising her even more. And... PETER IS BACK with a little help from Janine (I laughed a lot to Felicia sticking Peter in webs).

This is a bit more like it. My biggest gripe with this Beyond Spider-Man "run" is how inconsistent and full of filler it has. But when it does something right, it does it VERY right. This issue is a prime example of that. Gleason has a great ability to make his characters all bounce off each other naturally and elevate the stakes so that every panel feels important. It's a surprisingly dark issue that doesn't seem to shy away from pushing the heroes into very uncomfortable corners - enhanced only by Bagley's ever-wonderful art. Queen Goblin, while still fresh to the scene, has potential to be a pretty sinister Big Bad if she continues her villainy after this arc is over. All in all this was a great entry in an otherwise hit-or-miss series. more

I felt myself actually verbally rooting for Peter to get up. The pacing for this story gives you the perfect amount of tension to make you believe that the outcome might not be what we inevitably know it will be. There is a beautiful scene with Black Cat falling and we zoom in on a tear of hers falling with her reflection in it. Holding on this for two panels to build that tension until the tear explodes, a web shooting through it to catch her. Masterful visual storytelling by Bagley. Peter is back.

This issue kept me craving for more, the art is outstanding and the dialogue very smooth and focused. I'm still intrigued by Queen Goblin and believe that she has potential to be a great villain but it will all depend on how they use her the next few issues. Her powers so far have been average and nothing out of this world but we'll have to wait to see how threatening she really is. I'm a huge fan of MJ, Black Cat and Peter's chemistry. It's one of my biggest highlights of the Beyond Arc. Overall, a great issue to keep the momentum going.

Not sure i love the new character yet, although i do like the remix of the penance stare. With that said if you have been a fan of this beyond arc, like myself, you'll definitely enjoy this issue.

This issue has great character beats and interactions. The script is well-paced and well-structured. The jokes and power lines in the dialogue are good, but the connective tissue is a bit clumsy. (Were I to be an editor, my first law of comics dialogue would be, "People. Talk. In. Contractions!") The art's just terrific. It's not just Bagley drawing ASM, it's Bagley drawing ASM *really well*. Kudos to the inkers and colorist, too; great finishing is an important part of the presentation. Queen Goblin has about 1 more issue in her, I think/hope. Therapist gimmick, standard Goblin sadism, Shur-Fine Penance Stare, yadda yadda. I'm surprised they haven't already confirmed her obvious identity. (I'm really glad that the Goblin Gaze only more
