I really enjoyed this issue. I had strategized to read some light hearted comics that I need to catch up on to help bounce back from the heaviness that I thought would come from this issue, but it was unnecessary. This issue is a lot of fun to read! Ric is becoming more likable, we get our first look at a new Nightwing, the artwork pops, and Scarecrow terrifies. Ric's budding relationship with his favorite bartender was a welcome addition considering we were getting to the point that if we received yet another "Dick Grayson brooding over the city" book, it might as well have been renamed Batman 2.0. Read Full Review

This issuefeatures the artwork of Travis Moore and Patch Zircher. Zirchers work is consistentwith what Ive seen previously in ActionComics. Perhaps too consistent. In more than one scene, Sapienza looks morelike Superman in a Nightwing mask than another person. I think Nightwing is a different book, and callsfor a different artistic approach. Nightwing continues to impress me with its status quo change and how the writers of this book are handling it. The art works great for the story that's being told and we're getting a whole new look at our main character now that he's come face to face with his alter ego.  It's a lot of fun even if it's not the Nightwing you're used to and I totally recommend it to people who have been staying away from this because this is certainly the most interesting the title has been in a long time. Nightwing #53 was the best issue of this new direction for this series thus far. Scott Lobdell and Fabian Nicieza did a much better job developing Ric Grayson and the new Nightwing's characters to be more fully realized than previous issues. Now that they are moving the Scarecrow sub-plot into the main story Lobdell and Nicieza should be able to make this new direction for Nightwing much stronger. Read Full Review

Moore's and Zircher's artwork continue to delight, with dynamic action shots and wonderful panel work, but the colorful depiction of Bldhaven is the most lively thing about the issue. I want to know how this all ends, but it seems like the machination are still getting into gear. Read Full Review

Nightwing #53 continues to improve on the current problem " aka: this isn't Nightwing " and introduces some interesting ideas. Unfortunately, what this issue really does is prove why it's important for publishers to actually plan their stories before jumping into them. This could have been a great story that actually featured Nightwing with strong supporting characters that are based on the new characters at play here " Ric and Sapienza " but instead, we're getting a rushed, mess of a story that has been inconsistent every step of the way " both in the script and visual presentation. The art is the best part. Moore and Zircher do a solid job overall. This book does feel oft kilter these past few issues however. Hopefully somebody comes on and picks a better direction. It does feel like this book is lost at sea at the moment. Read Full Review

Love how this is all shaping up. Nice to see Ric coming into his own while the detective plays Nightwing. Cool to see the two of them work together.

Finally the story started& I really enjoyed this issue. The new Nightwing became more likable ( Don’t know how long this lasts for me)& also had a fun scene. He isn’t portayed as a total loser, but we are seeing the difference between him& Dick at the same time. I like, that up until now he is still kind of acting like a cop& not like some maniac like Lock-up.As for Dick apart from protecting his friend, I don’t think anything real interesting happened to him, but how can fans not like to see him happy? I am also glad Scarecrow‘s story finally really started& his group therapy was fun to read. Love his new costume. It already happened in other stories, but not really in the main runs, so I am glad DC finally gave him an outfit, th at looks more like his Pre52 one. He finally has his hat again! The ending with Scarecrow teases an exciting story, so I hope Lobdell can give us one. Moore is doing the art again in this issue& I don’t know, which art I prefer. His and Mooneyham‘s art are both cool in a different way, so I can live with both. I am definitely excited for the next issue& I hope the story stays good. more

"You have the right to keep your mouth shut" Some iffy lines of dialogue here and there, but overall this was an enjoyable read. I just wish the whole issue was done by Travis Moore. His art is really nice to look at. And by the way, Scarecrow, going after people in the support group? That's just low.

Does DC even care about continuity anymore?! Isn’t Vicki Vale still with Wyrm. He’s still around in Batgirl so something is still up with him. The story itself was not that bad. Besides for the Vicki Vale thing, another shocker was how well Ric and “Nightwing” worked together. Unfortunately I would have wanted all of the new Nightwings there.

Haven’t read it yet, but I assumed Vickie was freed after #49. DC sometimes ignores stories just like that. Penguin also was shot in Red Hood& recovered pretty fast until Batman.

But the thing about that is, he was shot in Red Hood and we saw him again in Batman. Different books so I’ll let it slide but this is same book that Vicki got teleport to the web

THE GOOD: -The art was definitely a step up from the previous issues. That's nice. -I actually thought Ric's description of his amnesia was really good. It added some nice layers to his character. -That last page was great, albeit predictable. I enjoyed the way Scarecrow was written and the artist depicted him really well. +1 extra point for finally making me want to pick up the next issue. THE BAD: -So we are starting every issue with "My name is Ric. I was once Nightwing, but then I took a bullet to the head." Good to know. -I just can't stand this whole Detective Nightwing thing. His lines are bad and he just feels like his only purpose is to display the costume rather than be a compelling character. -That scene wh ere Ric looks in his drink and sees Nightwing's face just made me cringe. It was kin to that terrible Scarecrow shadow thing from earlier. -I'm also not into Ric's new love interest. more

Oh, I'd say his run was horrible. I really can't stand Tim Seeley's writing. But I might prefer it to what Ben Percy did with Nightwing. Sam Humphries' run was also a major disappointment. And I don't think Scott Lobdell is doing much better than any other writer. Maybe that's why DiDio decided to "kill" Nightwing. It's a whole volume of errors.

Rebirth hasn't been kind to Nightwing. the second half of New52 neither. some of the early New 52 was ok, but never as good as when Dick Grayson was teamed up with Damian Wayne as Batman & Robin. ...i still think they should have kept Batman Inc with two Batman. Dick & Damian teamed up and Bruce operating solo. - - either that or just reboot the whole thing and have Dick Grayson younger as Robin.

there's an ugly rumor been circulating that after Doomsday Clock wraps that DC is planning another line-wide reboot. time will tell if it's actually true or not. - - there's not too many writers that can actually honor continuity and what has come before. i like a nice solid Continuity as well. there's only a handful of independent comic series i've read that were pretty much 100% air tight.

The worst Nightwing story arc in recent history continues with another issue that fails to deliver anything of value. Speaking for myself, by the second page I was no longer invested in the issue. Seeing generic cop flash his badge while in costume is among the dumbest things I've seen in a comic this year; I am one of a very small number of people who complained about Harley Quinn being able to nearly kill Booster Gold, a hero who has taken hits from beings like Doomsday and survived, with a diner silverware considering this peak stupid. However, this story proved there were dumber things to be presented to readers, with "joe generic, standard cop" becoming Nightwing being one of them; If fate truly deemed this person should have that identity it was on one hell of a bender. There is not much to say about this issue other than the story is piss poor and insulting towards one of the most celebrated members of the Batman family. "ric grayson" continues to be nothing more than a third-rate (or lesser) Red Hood knock-off without any of the personality of actually valid reasons for acting the way he does. No curiousity regarding the skillset he possesses and complaining when he takes action, he becomes less likeable by the panel. I reiterate what I have stated since this arc began, if this was to be Dick Grayson's fate it would have been kinder to kill him off. more
