'Shadows Of The Bat' enters its final act as things take a dangerous and chaotic turn, putting various characters into dangerous positions as familiar new players enter the game. Both stories in this issue showcase the inherent dangers that can be present in Gotham, where the struggle between light and dark is heavy and takes a major toll on those caught in the middle. Detective Comics #1055, while being more plot driven like last issue focuses just enough on some of the individuals of the Bat-family as well as moving the plot forward in a significant way. Furthermore, the second feature continues to be an interesting look at (presumably) Nero in the context of Batman's know past. Read Full Review

All of this great writing by Tamaki and artwork by Nahuelpan made Detective Comics #1055 one of the better issues of this weekly Batman event. I am genuinely invested in all the characters in this story. Which all creates greater excitement for discovering how The Shadows of the Bat event will end. Read Full Review

Tamaki and co. took a big risk by introducing a new foe this late in the game. Though this issue is well executed, it is frustrating to see such a large potential monkey wrench thrown in during the closing pages. If the creative team cannot adequately explain how and why their new main villain is here during the next three issues, all of the good work they have done so far could be for naught. The main story has great art and a great Huntress scene, but other than that I don't think it's worth your time or your money. The backup continues to be great, and it's absolutely worth your time, but the price point is still too high. I recommend waiting for the "House of Gotham" trade (please make it happen, DC!) and skipping "Shadows of the Bat." Read Full Review

Well, like your average anime, things have become too much for the others, so cue Batman to come in and save their asses. I get kind of tired of this always happening, but still, it was a pretty good issue. It's a bit soon for the Scarecrow, since we had to deal with him all last year. Arkham has a ton of other looneys we haven't seen in a while, but no. It's the same bad guy we've seen enough of for a while. Couldn't they have at least ditched the stupid gas mask? As for our backup story, we now enter the No Man's land point in the saga of the least lucky boy who ever lived. This story continues to be the more interesting of the two. Though it's rare these days for both to be entertaining. That makes Detective the only $5 book worth payin g that price for. more

I found the beginning entertaining until Nightwing got his butt handed to him. Really incompetent that just didn’t ring true and then the book just warps to the surprise ending that I just go yeah um no. The backup story was very good. I will say if the backup was put into a full length trade all by itself then I feel overall it will become a classic. Besides a few issues it has been continuously strong.

I want to support a batfamily story, I really do. But the characterization of some characters is getting so completely off that it's almost funny. This issue we got Huntress, doing acrobatics and fighting when injured and shouting jokes at Dr. Freeze. At the same time, we got Nightwing who can't even sneak on a villain, literally stumbles and falls, beaten by every single opponent around, and ends as a hostage. Unless the sole purpose of the series is to prop Huntress, I really don't get what's the endgame here.
