Detective Comics #1048

Detective Comics hasn't been this engaging in months. Shadows of the Bat is proving to be a must-read chapter in the Bat Family with Tamaki and Reis working strongly as a team. It'd be nice if this was the ongoing creative team going forward on the book. Read Full Review

Wow! Detective Comics #1048 is another great issue in Mariko Tamaki's run! This chapter makes it clear that despite Batman's absence from Gotham, the deeper themes being developed are directly related to the Dark Knight. Additionally, there's an exciting mystery the Bat-family has to unravel with the reader coming at it from a more insightful perspective because of the point-of-view of the narrator (literary terms- not that one of the characters is narrating this tale). Detective Comics #1048 has lots of talk and lots of words while nothing much else is happening, but I didn't get bored at all. Instead, it held my interest and made me want to keep reading to see what the heck was going down at this tower. So it's an okay issue that I didn't love and didn't hate. The art is fantastic. The paywall's high and the entertainment value low. There's hardly a story here, and there is barely any character development other than very brief flashbacks to Wear's past. Honestly, I don't think this is worth the money. If you really want some cool Ivan Reis artwork, then I recommend picking up the Batman/Superman: The Archive of Worlds hardcover that just came out, which is one of the coolest comics that I've ever reviewed! But I can't recommend Detective Comics #1048. I wish I could. Read Full Review

Shadows of the bat has been stellar so far. The writing is fantastic the story has depth and intrigue. It feels very much like a dark detective tale that has me enjoying every page. The artwork is fantastic and the colors are perfect for a story like this. As a bonus the backup story is also fantastic. I'm really looking forward to the next issue

I do think the story here is a little played out, but it's solid enough. I actually enjoyed the backup more than the main story.

Not too bad. I have to admit this story is off to an interesting start. Here we learn a little more about Dr. Wear and how dangerous he may end up being after all. The most impressive thing is that it's turning out so well for a story where the others have to handle matters without Batman. I hope it stays on this intriguing path. Usually stories to be so long grow very monotonous even before being half finished. But so far it's going well. And Reis' art is a welcome addition to this series. The backup story is also surprisingly interesting. What kind of unbalanced system would send any innocent kid who'd been through such a trauma to Arkham? This can only be some sick joke only the Joker could play on a child for simply surviving. So my gu ess is that's what's gong on. He's manipulating things for his own perverted amusement. I'm also looking forward to seeing where this goes. more

Much better then the last issue. The setup is good but the payoff in the end is a little trite and hampers some of the build. The backup story was also better then last issue even though it’s a continuation but it felt more organic and real to the characters involved.

For a second there, I almost thought there's a good story here, that Wear might be an interesting character who takes his revenge on Gotham because his mother wasn't taken care of. Nope, turns out he hated his mother and he's an average crook. I guess expecting a good story from Tamaki was foolish on my part. The backup is even more bland.

Beautiful painted cover (style reminds me of the late Glen Orbik). Wonderful art from Ivan Reis, as usual. Unfortunately, also as usual, Reis’ pencils are wasted on a lackluster story.

it was quiet less than expected, hoping he was an honest character but nope he hated his mother. It seems if the person is not part or soon to be part of bat-family then he/she will be evil or bad in some shape or form. And I guess we are just drawing Harley as straight up Margot Robbie, not complaining just noticed.

22 pages of garbage with a pretty decent secondary story. I feel bad for Rosenberg having to prop up Tamaki who doesn't get or even care to get what the audience enjoys. The dialogue of the 1st story is long winded and takes too long to get to the point. She takes 22 pages to establish something that could have been done in 4 pages. As I said, the secondary story far outshines the primary story in this issue.
