Overall, Detective Comics #1000 was a lot of fun to read. The stories are all over Batmans timeline. You see him agonizing over whether or not to include Dick as Robin and sitting in a wheelchair at the end of his life being confronted by the Penguin. You have a story for everyone. Not to mention the covers. With a cover to represent each decade in Bat-history, it was hard to decide on just one to purchase. I ended up choosing the Frank Miller variant because Dark Knight Returns was the first Batman story I read. After 80 years and (really more than) 1000 issues, Detective Comics proves its staying power by bringing together some of the most exciting Batman writers and artists of the last five decades (Adams, O'Neil, Tomasi, Capullo, King, Snyder, Lee, Dini, Nguyen, and more!) to craft their love-letters to the Dark Knight in all of his guises. Overall, this is a great issue. You get a lot of stories and the pin ups are lovely to look at as well as the overall art in the book. For its ten-dollar price tag, you're not going to find a much better deal. The covers all look pretty solid (I heard they're up to over sixty of them now, so I can't vouch for all of them) and there's a Batman story in here that will appeal to almost everybody, no matter what era you started reading the adventures of the caped crusader. There were many stories in this commemorative issue, but this issue highlights who Batman really is: he wishes there would be no more crime in Gotham, he is still scarred from his parents' deaths but we can see all the progress he has made, and he is thankful for his family. Read Full Review

After last year's quality celebration of Superman's legacy with Action Comics #1000, the pressure was on for Batman's to be just as good. Thankfully Detective Comics #1000 has very much lived up to that example and provided a worthy testament to Batman's significance. This army of superstars has spun some lovely yarns about Gotham's protector, unafraid to acknowledge the tragedy and pain of Bruce's life but also eager to celebrate what makes him and his family special. There's a lot to digest with this issue, and there a few really great stories along with some good ones. There are only a few that seemed a little odd or just didn't quite hit the mark for a celebration issue. It's a solid anniversary issue for celebrating the Dark Knight, but not perfect. However, “The Legend of Knute Brody” is worth the price of admission alone. There's a lot to enjoy, as well as different types of stories presenting something for everyone. Really outstanding collection. Rarely do these kind of books live up to expectations, but this really does. No spoilers here's that's part of the charm to see what each creator or creative team delivers, but I will say this though,the Geoff Johns and Kelley Jones entry really was touching, and Jones is just wonderful as always. Get this book and enjoy what comics are about, joy and wonder!

Great proof there’s no need to write for the trade! I enjoyed all of the stories. When looking at some of the writer/artist combos, I was initially a little quizzical. For instance, how do you not have O’neil And Adams together? But, when I saw it was Priest and Adams, I was totally into it. Great, great retrospective issue. Some stories are better than others, of course, but I have no reservations about recommending this issue to friends and family, regardless if they have read comics or not. Well done, DC!!

Strong showings from Warren Ellis, Scott Snyder, Paul Dini, and James Tynion. Worst of the bunch is either Kevin Smith's or Geoff Johns's stories.

It's finally here and I'm happy to say it's good. Today we celebrate 80 years for Batman, one of the most iconic characters of all time and I think this is a pretty good celebration. The stories were pretty good overall with Kevin Smith's one being my favorite. Another really good one was Tom King's Batman's Greatest Case, It was really heartwarming and the art was damn good. Overall, the art was Fantastic in all of them. Some better, some less, but all are pretty good. Scott Snyder and Paul Dini also had good stories so look out for them as well. I've got to add that I'm pretty hyped for the next issue, the part at the end with Arkham Knight was awesome and I can't wait to see what Tomasi will do with him Here's to 80 More year s of Batman! more

A surprisingly slow start from some of my favorite creators gave way to an avalanche of intriguing, beautiful, and memorable tales that highlighted different facets of Bruce. A must-read comic.

It's hard to review compilation issues like this but I was definitely overall pleased and didn't mind spending $13CAD on it. I knew nothing groundbreaking was going to happen but there were some great short stories that displayed why Batman has lasted for 80 years. My favorites were Kevin Smith, Geoff Johns and Paul Dini with least favorite being Dennis O'Neil, with the rest falling somewhere in between. All the art worked very well for me with the exception of Kelley Jones who hasn't aged well. I'd say its worth owning and I'm happy to have both Action and Dectective 1000 in my lifetime.

Best stories: Snyder, Bendis, Johns, Smith Weakest stories (none of which were bad): King, Dini, Arkham Knight Biggest takeaways: Dick Grayson needs to be Dick Grayson again. King might actually get Batman and most of the cast but might not get how to write a comic. The best Batman writers are also incredilby humanistic. Ralph and Sue are still part of the DCU. DC has the best artists it's ever had, but NEal Adams isn't one of them anymore.

80 years. Wow. I can't imagine that Bill Finger with Bob Kane was ever hoping for their creation to live and prosper for so long. He survived a world war (I doubt he'll survive the next one), rainbow-colored suits, broken back, few dead sidekicks (they got better), a couple of Crises and Tom King. He had an awesome cartoon show, some good and bad movies, a great series of video games, on and off relationship with his underwear, and with a great many women, and of course, the most important thing, a plethora of great stories told by many, many, many writers over the years. Some of which were universally praised and some others were greatly polarizing. The anniversary issue is great, with many different Bat-stories, by many differen t writers showing us different takes on Batman. We've got Batman Mystery Seeker - by Scott Snyder; Batman Master Planner - by Warren Ellis; Batman Troll of the Underworld - by Paul Dini; Batman The Smith - by Kevin... Smith and more. Even the notorious Tom King reached into the bowels of himself and found the old writer, that delivered good stories. His Bat-family banter was near excellent, near because the use of the word "thing" was a bit excessive at one point. If I were to choose my favorite story, the gun to the head sort of thing, I'd say it's Warren Ellis' story, closely followed by Kevin Smith. The Bat was scary, super-prepared and efficient as hell. But also compassionate? And what Smith did in his story was just great, what was taking life is now protecting it. Maybe cliche, I don't know, but done really well. And I'm excited to read the next issue. It seems to me that the Arkham Knight is here to defend the weak and poor and misunderstood villains from the evil Dark Knight. Might be interesting. 80 years. Amazing feat. Happy birthday to the World's Greatest Detective and the Best Superhero of All Time. That last one may rile some people up. more

there were some hits and misses. But majority it them were hits. I liked Peter J Tomasi, Bendis, Geoff Johns, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Kevin Smith, Denny O'Neil, hell even Tom King. I like majority of the art here, and this was one of the better anthologies.

Jam-packed with tales from a multitude of talented creators, this anthology is a worthy tribute to 80 years of the World’s Greatest Detective. I find it difficult to review a book like this. As with any compilation there will be some tales that are better than others. A character like Batman has many interpretations and writers and artists continue to find new ways to tell stories with him. To some he is the Dark Detective investigating mysteries and shedding light on the darkest corners of Gotham City. To others the patriarch of the Bat Family, mentoring and caring for those worthy to carry the mantle. And still to others he is the lone vigilante, striking fear in the hearts of criminals in a lonely quest for vengeance and justice. W hatever Batman means to you, this book has you covered. While nothing groundbreaking is going to happen in an anthology book, it was fun to see how different writers took the opportunity to expand and play with the Batman mythos. It will be interesting to see how much, if any of it will show up again in future stories. While not every individual story was a home run, all were good at least and some were terrific short stories. Some of my favorites include: Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glampion, FCO Plascencia, and Tom Napolitano give us a tale of Batman’s ‘Longest Case’. Snyder shows his mastery of keeping you turning the pages, following the mystery that has taken Batman decades to solve. Kevin Smith, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair, and Todd Klein show us what happened to the gun that was used to kill Martha and Thomas Wayne in relevant tale featuring Matches Malone. ‘Batman’s Greatest Case’ by Tom King, Tony S. Daniel, Joelle Jones, Tomeu Morey,and Clayton Cowles which gives us a look at Batman from the perspective of his various family members, as well as a look at a tender moment from Bruce Wayne. With more than a dozen stories, pin-ups, and a star-studded preview for a new book, Detective Comics #1000 shows some of DC Comics most talented creators honoring a character that has thrilled fans for decades and shows why Batman is one of the most beloved characters in comics. more

With all the hype I think Detective Comics 1000 was rather disappointing. It is great to see some older artists& writers like Denny O‘ Neil, Kelley Jones or Dustin Nguyen back, but it would have been better if DC hired artists like Paul Gulacy or writers like Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon or Alan Grant. Instead we are getting mostly stories of regular modern writers like Tom King, Geoff Johns, Snyder, Tomasi or Bendis, which all feel quite rushed. Detective Comics #1000 also feels more like a 80 Page Giant ( even so it has 96 pages) than a Celebration of 80 years of Batman. Most of the stories are either mediocre or good, but none of them stood out for me& I can’t think of any of these stories being remembered years later. Geoff Johns st ory about a future Batman was rather disappointing. Kelley Jones art was quite wasted here. Paul Dinis story about a thug, who messed up everything was funny, but I enjoyed the art of Dustin Nguyen more than the actual plot. Snyders story was also ok& more funny, but nothing outstanding either. Kings story was mediocre, but also pointless. You just see the batfamily talking about what Batman is doing& that’s visiting his parents grave. All have some random oneliners. Tynions story was also a quite onesided look on Dick& Bruces Robins, since it didn’t question Robin at all. I also don’t know, since when a guy with a black& white view of the world& who beats up people regularly is „a hero forged in the light“, but that’s Batman‘s opinion... Bendis story about a future Penguin telling Batman he knew his identity was good, but the ending felt a little forced to me. My favorite story is the one by Denny O‘Neil, because Leslie was well portrayed there& she actually acted like herself. The story is basically about Leslie criticizing Batman, but it gives Batmans character more depths. It felt like a story from the 90ies again, which is great.I also enjoyed the stories from Kevin Smith & Warren Ellis. Jim Lee’s art was great as well. Both stories concentrate more on Bruce‘s character& that’s when this issue works. As for Tomasis story it’s a tease about his upcoming Arkham Knight story, which I still don’t know what to think about. The Arkham Knight is supposed to be Jason, but I doubt he will be him this time. The Arkham Knight himself also was a weak villain in the actual game& rather a broken character. Scarecrow was the main villain in the game, so I don’t know how this is going to work. Scarecrow also was mainly the one, who criticized Batman‘s methods& his character in the game, now in Detective Comics that’s the Arkham Knight. So he already feels like a different character. Maybe it’s DCs chance to cash in on the name instead of creating a new character, I don’t know. I’m not very thrilled about it up until now. If I compare this with other anniversaries, I think Detective Comics 526 or Batman 200& 400 did a better job, mainly because it delivered a full& actual great story instead of small ones, that mainly feel rushed& without loving attention to detail. Since it’s a celebration of 80 years of Batman it’s of course mainly about Batman‘s character& that’s good. These are the stories, that work for me. However stories, that also includes the villains& the batfamily don’t give enough credit to these characters. For example, even so he’s one of my favorite characters Penguin is in quite many stories, same goes for Ivy, but villains like Scarecrow or Two Face both are only shortly in the background. Both as two of Batman‘s A villains deserve better in a special like that. Same goes for batfamily members like Tim, Jason, Barbara or Cassandra, even Alfred. I think it would have been better, if we got not so many short stories, rather longer stories, that really give these characters their moment to shine than putting them in the background. So overall this issue is nothing people shouldn’t buy, because of its milestone, but it also feels quite underwhelming for me. I mostly enjoy the art. Jason Fabok also did a great job with his pin up of all major Batman characters. more

Action Comics 1000 set an expectation for what the millennium issue could represent. It was a celebration of the character traits and eras of Superman. Detective Comics 1000 is a ten dollar Batman anthology comic. The art was all great (4.5 of 5), but the stories were mostly either forgettable or written confusingly. Even stellar writers like Geoff Johns could not properly structure their stories into a short story format. Panels and story beats were omitted to shorten otherwise longer stories. Even Tom King who wrote an ingesting Superman story in AC 1000, took another dump on Batman with a jumbled mess of immature dialogue passed off as a short story here in Detective 1000. And as far as celebrating the 80 year history of Batman, maybe 2 of the stories paid any tribute to the history of Batman. I most appreciated the Longest Case and Precedent stories in this regard. Again looking back to AC 1000, we got a Luthor story, a story about the mobster from issue 1, and a classic Kent/Superman time crunch dilemma story that reminded me of Superman's long history and varied types of stories. Here in Detective 1000, it all just feels like a random excuse to pair headlining creators together. So I give the mostly mediocre writing a 3 of 5. Lastly, this issue gets a -1 overall for being $10. A fantastic AC 1000 could be put together for 80 pages at $8, but DC used Batman as an excuse to get a little extra cash from its readers this go around. If you have the cash for a $10 Batman anthology, you might find some value for your dollar in this issue. Otherwise, look for the couple of free excerpts released to online news sites and skip to issue 1001 for the next regular installment of Detective Comics. more

Here we are - #1000. Batman just turned 80 years old. So many artists - writers and illustrators, so many distinct comic eras, so many different styles... It's good time to be a comic fan, and be able to see these historic events with our own eyes. First Supes, now Bats - that being said, however, I can't say I enjoyed this celebratory mega issue nearly as much as Action Comics #1000 - the reason is, it doesn't really celebrate Batman to the extent Superman was celebrated. Most of these stories are decent, and focus on certain things that make Batman Batman, but maybe 3 or 4 in total actually are worthy of being in this collection, actually celebrating him and his mythos. Kevin Smith's short story is, in my opinion, the book's highlight - hands down, nothing comes even close. It's touching, sweet, and accomplishes what Geoff Johns' story about the car from Action Comics #1's cover did. It's fantastic. James Tynion IV did good job showing how Bruce decided to train Dick, Scott Snyder told a rather interesting loosely detective tale, and Paul Dini combined his signature cartoonish comedy with a pretty nice plot twist. If Smith's story deserves a 9/10 and a standing ovation, I'd rate these as 7/10 shorts. The rest is pretty weak - and hat's a bummer, because some of these stories were written by writers whom I truly enjoy - most notably Geoff Johns, Christopher Priest and Peter J. Tomasi. Brian Michael Bendis tried to do something different, but the electric ending twist disappointed me, can't lie. You know what I would enjoy as #1000? A bunch of heartwarming short stories not even focusing on Bats himself, but his relationships with others - both heroes and villains. I can hear people saying "but hey, Batman is not Superman!", and I feel you, but I don't think Bruce relentlessly brutalizing some punks while Leslie watches all of that and says she's sorry for him, is a good way of celebrating the character's 80th birthday. I swear, some episodes of Batman: The Animated Series alone were paying him more respect. Heart of Ice and Mad Love both instantly coming to my mind. I'd kill to see some of Batman's iconic villains and allies showing some love for the old Bat for once. Like Bruce tailing one of them, and finding out it was all a plan to lure him to his own secret birthdayparty. Would it be cliche and unlike usual Batman comics? Yeah, you bet, but aren't celebrations cliche in general? They should be over the top and upbeat, they should be colorful, silly and fun. That's what I miss here, and that's what Nuclear Winter Special lacked as well, by the way. Bruce helping Mr. Freeze and see some progress with Nora, Harley rocking the dress she got from him in TAS, Ivy turning an old, ugly ruin into a beautiful park, Solomon Grundy returning the favor from The Long Hallowen and sharing his meal with Bats, these are exactly kind of stories I'd expect to be featured here. more

i tried re-reading this to see if maybe i was being a little too hard on the comic. no. it’s a big let down. i think what you had in mind would have made for a much better Batman celebratory issue. …that Denny O’Neil story was awful! and Leslie was calling Batman “Bruce” in front of a bunch of thugs. so frigging dumb!

I hated this scene. Johns' and Bendis' endings also were heavily disappointing - maybe not to such degreee, but nonetheless I can't say I'm satisfied with this birthday party. Aside from Kevin Smith, damn, the man nailed it.

The story with Leslie is the only story I really enjoyed, because it fitted her character. And Leslie did something similar in No Mans Land. Since I agree with her, so I don’t think it was dumb. But I agree with 1000 being a big disappointment. As for Kevin Smith I liked the story, but it felt like something, that can’t happen. I mean why would people in DC make a big deal out of the gun of Joe Chill? They don’t know he killed Batmans parents.

Hey, 1,000 issues, that's pretty sweet. I decided I'd do something a bit different for this review. I'm going to rank and give my thoughts on each individual story and assign each one a rating. I will add up those ratings and average them to achieve the total for the issue. Manufacture for Use: Can we all just agree this is the best one? I mean it's got beautiful art, a sweet story and solid writing. Not to mention the damn perfect ending. Rating: 9.0/10 The Legend of Knute Brody: I really enjoyed this one too. It had a funny story, it kept me hooked and the end is fantastic. My only complaint is that Nguyen's artwork didn't look like his best. 8.5/10 Return to Crime Alley: This was… interesting. Aside from the first page, Eptin g's art was alright, as per usual. The script felt blah though. I did kinda like the darker tone, though and it being more of a deconstruction of Batman as opposed to a celebration, so it set itself apart from the others in that respect. 6.5/10 I Know: I actually kinda liked this one. The future setting was pretty good, even if the story was really dull. The art was magnificent. The script was bad, but I really liked the way that ended. I dunno. 6.0/10 The Batman's Design: This one wasn't too terrible, just really bland. The script didn't stand out, and the art was only just above average. The ending was decent though. 6.0/10 Batman's Greatest Case: Eh. The dialogue was annoying, the story was weak, the art was great. Seems to be a common thread with this issue. The end was sweet though. 5.5/10 Batman's Longest Case: This had great artwork, I mean, what'd you expect, it's Greg Capullo, but it was wordy and the end was just stupid. 5.0/10 The Precedent: This was alright Tynion. Martinez was fantastic as usual. This was just forgettable though, not to mention the script was annoying. 5.0/10 Heretic: Yeah, this was bad. Neal Adams did a tolerable job with the art, Priest's script was rushed and really boring. And the non-ending was frustrating to say the least. 4.0/10 Medieval: Is anyone gonna get mad at me if I admit I just skimmed through the second half of this one? It was way too long, and I got the gist of it early on. Arkham Knight doesn't like Batman. The script just felt hollow. And about halfway through I realized it was essentially a glorified pinup gallery. 3.5/10 The Last Crime in Gotham: Ugh. Kill me. 3.0/10 more

Yeah, that one had a pretty stupid ending. And the Last Crime in Gotham was just all kinds of bad. The only reason it got a 3 was for Kelley Jones' art.

yeah. i totally get that, as i feel the same way. i had such higher expectations from his intro in this. detective #1000 wasn't the utter failure that Batman #50 was, but it was still very lackluster given how momentous it should have been. especially when compared to action #1000.

definitely not the worst, but i was really hoping for something as enjoyable as any one of the issues 994 995 996 996 997 998 or 999. ....those really had me thrilled and excited after reading. it's not the end of the world, but i really wasn't all that jazzed after reading Tomasi's story for 1000. ...all the other stories could have been 'Batman Odyssey' bad, but if Tomasi's story was up to par with what he'd just done, i would have still looked at 1000 with fondness.

Yeah, even so they weren’t like Batman Odyssey for me, still ok, but nothing special. It depends on how well Tomasi can write Arkham Knight& I hope he’ll do a better job than in the Arkham Knight comics. Arkham Knight was a villain who really disappointed me in the game. If Scarecrow wasn’t the main villain, there would be no main villain half of the game.

Did they really swear that? I only remember, that there were countless theories about his true identity& I liked that it was Jason. However never cared much about the AK anyway. I cared mainly about Scarecrow.

I see, I saw countless guesses about the AK being Hugo Strange, Hush, a new character, Bruce Wayne clone& even Sharpe in disguise. I don’t think it was that obvious as so many claim now. We wouldn’t have had so many theories otherwise.

Meh. I wasn't expecting much from this and that's about what I got. Going through each and every story would take time I'd rather not devote to this, but needless to say, this felt very much like one of the 80 Page Giants. And I really don't like those because the quality is never consistent. Anthologies in general suffer from this, but I would expect everyone to bring their A game to a big issue like this. Instead we get tons of mediocrity with an okay story here and there. I audibly groaned by the time I got to the Tom King story because I felt like I was wasting my time by that point. I didn't need to read this and I would've been better off just reading the few pages that lead into the next issue and moving onto better comics.

THIS WAS NOT WORTH the $9.99!!! all that hype for nothing! i had such high hopes for this landmark issue, but it was truly disappointing. nice art, but the writing was either Bad or just 'Meh'. very standard and uninspired. New52's Detective comics #27 was much better than this.

some of the other stories were just trash though. the only one that had a decent payoff was the Kevin Smith story. it's ending was nice. but the lead in was pretty corny. but both stories were much better than the rest of the book. i seriously feel cheated out on my $9.99.

the art is nice, but it still doesn't justify the cover price. i have books i paid less for that had much better art. heck, the total $$$ for Detective 994 & 995 is less that this one issue, and i enjoy that art much more. same with Kings of Fear. i recently re-read Detective 994-999 and still thoroughly enjoyed it. i might have actually enjoyed it more than my first reading. ...this 1000 milestone was just a huge let down for me.

i don't remember if you'd told me if you've ever read Tomasi's Batman&Robin or not? ...if not, consider picking up the Batman&Robin: Bad Blood (essential edition) it's the first 8-issue arc of his B&R run. REALLY good!

i enjoy much (but not all) of Tomasi's writing. i didn't enjoy Arkham War or Arkham Knight at all. though i can easily say that his new52 Batman & Robin run is my favorite thing he's ever written. at least check out the first arc. that's one i strongly recommend.

Ok I will. Arkham War was still ok to me, but not great. At least Scarecrow was one of the main characters. With Arkham Knight I was just very disappointed. Love the game so much& the comic could have been a great opportunity to address so many questions. It could have been awesome, but best thing was the art. It contradicted so much from the games.

pretty sure i ended up giving away my copies of Arkham War and Arkham Knight. don't remember to who, but i knew i'd never read either again. ...different writer, but i kind of regret giving away my Batman '66 comics. i probably wouldn't ever read them again, but a few issues i might have.
