The Aspiring Kryptonian - David Beasley

I whole heartingly realize my own bias towards PKJ's work is fully on display here, but I can't help it. However, I don't think it changes the fact this is a great first issue that promises to be an epic House of El adventure. This is definitely a must read for any PKJ fan, but it's also a great "off the beaten path type of Superman book that has potential to be something special. Read Full Review

Text pages to fill in some gaps and further flesh out the two timelines is classic PKJ. Count me in. Killer first issue. Read Full Review

The Adventures of Superman Book of El #1 launches us into a story that spans across time and space. AIPT - David Brooke

    Sep 03, 2025

Adventures of Superman: Book of El #1 is a powerful, cinematic opener that blends mythic scale with heartfelt humanity, showing Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Scott Godlewski have big plans for the Man of Steel. While the cliffhanger comes a touch too soon, the epic tone and family-first heart make it clear this story has the makings of a major Superman saga. Read Full Review

Adventures of Superman: The Book of El #1 is an ambitious and immersive continuation of Phillip Kennedy Johnsons Superman saga. With its grand visuals, layered mythology, and hints of deeper family secrets, it promises a rich and rewarding run, especially for fans who came aboard during Future State. If you're looking for something bold, cosmic, and deeply rooted in Superman's legacy, this is a journey worth joining. Read Full Review

    Weird Science - Gabe Hernandez

Adventures of Superman: Book of El #1 is a perfect example of trying to do too much at once. It's a frantic, dizzying rush of ideas that never cohere into a compelling story. It's got a lot of flash, but beneath the glossy exterior is a hollow, incomprehensible mess. Read Full Review

PKJ's return to Superman only proves that he never should have left Action Comics in the first place. Excellent issue, with a great start to the story, just like Warworld Saga.

PKJ's Action Comics didn't hit me on the first read but as I grew to love his take on Superman and his family I was sad to see him go when they did those random writers after his finale and then they brought in Mark Waid for Phantoms then for his current young Clark run (which is growing on me).

Nonetheless I love how PKJ is back and was given his own thing here with the Book of El as a kind of continuation of his saga. I can't wait to see what he does with the twins too!

Good book. And nice to see a conclusion to the best modern Superman run.

The first issue picks up some threads of PKJ's Action Comics storyline, and succeeds the most when showing the Kent family all together. Otherwise, there's some slightly confusing plot mechanics here as well, enough to pique my interest in returning for the next issue.

I like what PJK is going for capturing those loving happy Kent family vibes at the farm but it just feels so unnatural how forced the relationship with the kids is written. I appreciate he's doing his best to give us those family moments we were robbed of by Bendis aging up Jon but it just doesn't work for me. I can take or leave the whole war world story but like PJK enough to see where this goes.
