But Why Tho? - William Tucker Jul 18, 2023

Hawkgirl #1 hints at a series full of life and energy. It sets Kendra off on her adventure, but with her superhero friends there to perhaps serve as a buffer before she goes out on her own. Read Full Review

The Comicbook Dispatch - kcscribbles Jul 18, 2023

Hawkgirl #1 is a great debut issue that promises a series full of action and a great villain in Vulpecula, whos incredibly sinister and will be a formidable nemesis for Hawkgirl in the issues to come. Recommended. Read Full Review

    ComicBook.com - Adam Barnhardt Jul 19, 2023

Hawkgirl #1 ditches most everything fans know about the character, a hefty risk that pays dividends in this debut. As a result, comic readers are treated to a dynamic reimagining of the character that's nothing short of a delight. Read Full Review

Graphic Policy - Logan Dalton Jul 23, 2023

Galaxy's enthusiasm (and talking corgi) make her a nice foil to Kendra's world-weariness, and I'm definitely reading Prettiest Star while waiting for Hawkgirl #2 to drop. Read Full Review

Geek Dad - Ray Goldfield Jul 18, 2023

This book often takes on a bit of a storybook tone in the narration, but it's packed with characters and maybe a bit overly ambitious. But it's fascinating and I can't wait to see more. Read Full Review

    Comic Watch - B. Radtz Jul 18, 2023

Its the beginning of a new era for the DC Universe, and for Hawkgirl and theyre pulling out all of the stops. Kendras moved to the big city, and is trying to start new, but shes in Metropolis. Metropolis, the hub of the Superfamily, and it runs the risk of feeling too cramped for its own good. Hopefully its not a long term, because I dont want to see her become a guest star in her own book. Read Full Review

It's a charming issue, albeit one that focuses on the villains and supporting characters more than our hero. Read Full Review

Comic Book Revolution - Kevin Lainez Jul 18, 2023

Hawkgirl #1 is a solid start to this new series starring Kendra Saunders. While Jadzia Axelrod runs into problems with how she writes narration there is a great foundation when Kendra's chemistry with her former Justice League teammates is given time to shine. Hopefully the positives are what Hawkgirl builds from and avoids the negatives that appeared in this first issue. Read Full Review

    Henchman-4-Hire - Sean Ian Mills Jul 22, 2023

Solid, enjoyable start to the series with a strong focus on the main character and her current status quo. Though the issue is also a little overstuffed with characters and things going on, and it doesn't feel like there's anything uniquely Hawkgirl about it. Read Full Review

The Fandom Post - Chris Beveridge Jul 26, 2023

Everything in Hawkgirl is competently done and it provides a lot of information but it doesn't feel like it sets us up well with our leading character. It's just so busy and packed with things that it's like the first episode of a show with a lot of CG that's trying to get all of its models built for the whole series at once. There's even a friendship reconnect that almost turns into a date of sorts in the mix as well. Readers get a feel for all the various parts of Kendra's life but we don't get to see Kendra actually living here all that much. There's no breather and that's before even talking about the pages involving the ostensible villain making their move out of sight. It's not bad but it's just familiar and doesn't do anything to really say exactly what it wants to be. It's every familiar setup piece laid out predictably so with solid artwork and layouts to carry it forward. Read Full Review

Weird Science - Gabe Hernandez Jul 18, 2023

Hawkgirl #1 is an unmitigated disaster and one of the worst (best?) examples of a writer's narcissistic need to push themselves into a character's life instead of caretaking what the character is meant to be. The setup is disjointed, the connections to continuity don't make sense, the self-insert characters are irritating, but the art is fantastic. Read Full Review

Lyles Movie Files - Jeffrey Lyles Jul 12, 2023

Hawkgirl's opening chapter fails to take flight. It's a poorly executed spotlight in terms of showing what makes such a compelling character so great. It's probably best to revisit JSA and Justice League instead of watching this crash and burn over the next four months. Read Full Review
