Matt: I can confidently say that Phil blew me away with how detailed and accurate he was in bringing Carrie Fisher's Leia to these pages. It looks as though they simply put a portrait of her onto the pages and it instantly took my breath away. Phil also has some fun artwork such as when he shows an X-wing explosion showing the pieces breaking apart and the ball of fire within. The art was a standout for me returning to this fun world visually. Clayton is working magic on the letters and the tones and inflections within the voices are captured perfectly and immersively within the panels. Read Full Review

Star Wars #1 gives reason to believe that Marvel is ready to deliver a strong and satisfying follow-up to Return of the Jedi. The opening issue also gives us some time with Han as he's off on some barren world helping Valance, who called in him to assist on a gang he's been dealing with. This ties in as well as part of something larger, but it's definitely interesting to see Valance so early in this period. I like the character, and with him and Han having kind of settled things, it's fun to see them together. Basically, though, all three stories are connected, and it's just a waiting game to find out who is really pulling the strings. I would have preferred more time just laying foundations, showing what's come before,e and how far past the fall of the Empire we are to get a handle on things. It reads well enough and looks good overall, but I'm just incredibly wary about this period since the novel side of things has struggled with it as well. He brings in plenty of sci-fi action, with Noto supplying some of his most beautiful work yet. Noto has had a storied career with Star Wars, providing multiple fan art and covers for a franchise that clearly means so much to him. Noto's early pages are thrilling, featuring Luke and Rynn's space battle against a surprise attack. Everything about Segura's and Noto's Star Wars #1 is fulfilling and satisfying, but it didn't reach the heights of previous comics published by Marvel. The era between Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Episode VII: The Force Awakens is still mostly unexplored by the Star Wars extended media, so it's interesting to see what direction Segura will take the characters. Star Wars #1 was not the exciting first issue I was hoping for. Actually, it was pretty boring overall. I hope this was all just an odd misplay and things get better, but coming out of the gate this slow is a bold strategy Cotton, but I guess we will have to wait and see. I didn't sense any hype leading up to this issue and I worry that this is just DOA like what's their name! Read Full Review

I like Alex Seguira's Dick Tracy, but not a fan of his Green Hornet and this is kind of on the cusp. I love that Valence is in it, but do we need three plot threads in the first issue? And do we need 5 pages about the trade issues with Leia? Why didn't the squadron of X-Wings see the massive Star Destroyer the size of a city just a mile away from them? Don't they have computers? Phil Noto is capable of drawing incredible likenesses of actors, but his action sequences always look kind of stiff to me. That becomes particularly apparent in his Star Wars work. Segura’s story feels equally safe, resulting in an issue that is perfectly fine for a Star Wars comic, but underwhelming for a first issue.

I’ve collected every Star Wars #1 out there over decades, and this issue by far is the weakest launch to a SW series I’ve ever read. While Noto’s artwork is good (and better than the recent Battle of Jakku miniseries), the writing is weak.Luke and his squadron have gone up against 2 Death Stars, a fleet of Star Destroyers and dozens of TIE Fighters, yet he has his squadron retreat in this issue from a group of pirate ships?!! Leia gets butt-hurt because a planet doesn’t want to join their Republic? Are these the best storylines that the writer could muster when the sky was the limit on new ideas post-ROTJ?! Very disappointing!

I don't want to beat up on this comic ... but it would be so easy to do so. I'll simply say that it was a massive disappointment.
