This two-part story reads like a brief diversion in the grand scheme of Amazing Spider-Manreframing some key figures on the board while staging future eventsbut the adventure it delivers is classic Amazing Spider-Man-fun with plenty of melodrama, twists, and expectations setting. Amazing Spider-Man #48 delivers a blink-and-you'll-miss-it setup and resolution to the fight over the Winkler Device. The motivations for almost every character except Spidey and Betty are implausible at best, and the overall conflict lacks weight. If not for Todd Nauck's excellent art, this issue would be a forgettable throwaway. Read Full Review

Plot Chasm and Hallow's Eve are being manipulated by Queen Goblin, who is responsible for using the Winkler Device to convince Ned that she is Hobgolin. Queen Goblin still hates Green Goblin to death, so she wants Chasm/Ben Reilly to turn into some Goblin using the device. She lied to Hallow's Eve and Chasm that she was going to use the device to give him memories of Peter Parke, since he longs for that part of his life. Peter and Betty manage to convince Hallow's Eve of the Goblin Queen's intentions and she helps Spider-man stop her and defeat her. Chasm settles for not having Peter's memories and Hallow's Eve asks him to see a future together, that the past doesn't matter. Ben Reilly knows something bad is in store for Spider-man. more

Hey, this mostly stuck the landing. I assume Peter's gap in his memories highlighted in this issue and with that phone call a few issues back is just setting up that he's got some Goblin in him, since we all know what's coming. I'm sure the Winkler device will be involved as well. If this is where Ben and Janine's story ends in ASM, I'm fine with that. I'm sure we'll get a more concrete conclusion in the Chasm/Kaine miniseries coming up.

Another pretty solid issue for the series here that follows up on the previous one fairly well. Nauck continues to be a good guest artist and I'd definitely welcome him to do more issues for the series. I just wish this had someone better than John Romita Jr. for the main artist. It looks like we're getting Ed McGuinness for the next few issues, though (with one possibly featuring Nauck instead), which is great. As for the story itself, it was good. I'm glad that the stuff with Sandman seems to be continuing in some capacity with the Sinister Six's involvement in the next story arc.

What can I say? I enjoyed it as the soap opera that it is even with how dirty Ben is being treated. It's a step up over what came way back when but it all feels temporary. The detailed artwork from Todd Nauck is simply great! The shadows alone make me appreciate him. He deserves more ASM in his future. The colors from Sonia are perfect. Somber and subdued and not overly bright or popping which works well here. Kudos to her!

I thought this was fine? Like, a bit confusing on the whole setup for the Goblin storyline, but I'm also a bit excited for it. However, Chasm stuff felt random and didn't seem to go anywhere that much. Maybe I just wish this was longer? And we saw Peter and Ben actually interacting without masks? The same kind of writing we had for Peter in #45-46?

Not sure what to think here. Is Ben going to be the new Goblin? Does Peter have gaps in his own memory and will that be the catalyst for the new Goblin problems? I'm glad that Ben seems to be getting back to normal but the idea that he and Janine share that they might just both be "bad" feels like a cop-out. The Spider team just don't want to deal with him anymore so we'll just write him off as a "bad guy" and push him away after doing him so dirty from the end of Beyond until now. At least he seems to not be crazy and has somewhat come back to BEN and away from Chasm. We'll see.

The art was great. Or maybe I just think it was because JrJr has been not my style. Either way, this issue felt alright to read. It wasn't great, but I was entertained.
