Weird Science - Eric Shea
Feb 08, 2022While I was a bit iffy on the way that the previous issue was handled, this continuation really allowed Jon Kent to shine while not letting its message blast you in the face the entire time. We've got real character emotion here and a story that's well down. The art is great and I look forward to what's coming next..... mostly because I want to understand what "The Rising" really means. Writer Tom Taylor has a fantastic sense of the players here, while the artwork from Cian Tormey, Raul Fernandez, Federico Blee, and Dave Sharpe delivers the bright, bigger-than-life adventure well enough. Unfortunately, the Son of Kal-El has not done enough to step out of his father's shadow, and with so many parallels, it makes him look like a placeholder wearing his daddy's clothes until the man of the house gets back. Just a great issue. Now Bendix revealed his Master plan and Jon have a new and interesting direction to go alongside Jay. Can't wait for the crossover.

The Bendix plan is revealed and I admire how Jon is presented to do whatever it takes to protect those who need it. The manipulation and gaslighting from Bendix makes for quite the easy-to-hate villain, I'm looking forward to seeing him fall.

I did not love this two parter but it was a nice side story. I am ready to get back into the Bendix arc and see more of what he has to offer at the major threat of this book.

The first half of this issue was such a generic surface level bore that's way beneath Taylor's usual great writing of previous works, however the second half picked things up for an interesting direction going forward.

The only thing I liked here is that we FINALLY get an idea about Bendix's plan, that's the only good thing here. Everything else is just stupid and propagandistic beyond belief. The good news is this book isn't selling and I think it's going to get cancelled pretty soon. If Wonder Girl got cancelled, which wasn't a great book but it was definitely better than this crap, I think this will get cancelled soon, too. This summer we're probably going to have Williamson's big event and if this book goes on after that, then DC really is begging for bankruptcy because you can't keep putting out books like these and expect people to support you.

Writing continues to get worse by each issue. The story itself is just plain uninteresting, and now the art is horrendous as well. It'll be a wonder if this series makes it past 20 issues

BORING! Aside from the perennial problem of modern comics taking an issue to tell three pages of story, the story itself just isn't very interesting. Dull. Dull. Dull.

Another installment of Tom Taylor superimposing his own warped world views and beliefs onto Jon and claiming that this is how the son of Superman would react to things. I don't think he would cry this much or this easily, but that's just a thought. Much like every issue there is no real danger or story presented that Jon can't handle. For being 1/2 human he does seem to be a little over powered. Anyway, hopefully this series will be canceled as despite what DC claims the sales are WAY down.
