Clark and Lois are predictably flabbergasted by Superboy and we get a couple of touching moments of reunion. The visuals accompanying Jon's adventure are stunning; dynamic and appropriately colorful. My personal favorite is a tense and oddly philosophical faceoff between Jon and that bastich, Lobo. The comic also makes a powerful statement about Superman's importance with Lois' encounter with aliens while wearing his symbol. The comic rounds out with a solid cliff hanger around Superman's father. It's too soon to say whether Bendis will capitalize on his choice to age Superboy but as a post-reveal of a twist, this comic does it right. Read Full Review

Chaos and confusion comes to the house of El. On the surface this looks like a simple enough mission to save an alien race from enslavement but the stakes are much higher than we could imagine. From the strange appearance of Superboy to the hidden objectives of the Dominators of the Dominion and Jor-El's distant attitude. Superman #7 takes something that a lot of fans are up in arms about and handles it rather gracefully. Fans reading through the book, hoping to find Bendis destroying Jon for his own sake are going to be in for a disappointment. This isnt a groundbreaking book; most of the stuff in here feels like things most fans have already figured out, but its well told and the art is mostly great. This was a classic Bendis info dump book, but it doesnt suffer from his penchant for long winded, boring dialogue and it works to hopefully keep readers coming back to see what comes next. This is a good comic and hopefully fans can look past their own prejudices and give it a chance. Read Full Review

A lot of what's going on with Jon and his aging is a shortcut for bigger things to come and I dislike that it undercuts his growth as a character in the books that could have gone on for several more years. That said, I like what we see of his journey here so far, the way Lois has to deal with it, and the touches of the galaxy that we get some time with. It's a smooth and engaging read with some fantastic artwork to drive it all home beautifully. While I have issues with aspects of the story I'm also just seriously enjoying the whole concept and actual forward momentum with real changes being made. Bendis ends this issue with an intriguing subplot that looks to finally pay off one of the lingering subplots from Dan Jurgens Action Comics run. This is more wide open ground for Bendis that wont disrupt an established winning formula and could lead to the defining storyline of Bendis early run on the book. As Jon, Lois and Jor-El continue to explore the universe, we find out the strength and power of the Superman symbol in that it is instantly recognizable and portrays its message of hope. Between Superman and Action Comics I think there is no doubt that Bendis gets and knows how to write Superman. However, Lois Lane does feel like a background character to this whole thing as she stays with Jor-el and Jon for a while and then goes back almost immediately, which makes it feel kind of pointless to have her travel with them in the first place. Jon Kent is back and tells his parents a story that Lois should have told Superman the moment he discovered she was back.  We get it here though and nothing about this feels natural, especially for how forced the situation was to begin with.  The art in this issue is amazing though and we get Jon Kent back so at least you can say those are positives to what we get here.  Sadly, that's about all my positives. It's not that bad, the family dynamics is interestingly done here. I understand why Lois had to leave, she is a human while her son is part Kryptonian, he can handle anything moreover she didn't expect her son to stay in space for years. The deal was one summer even if they don't trust Jor-El, Clark and Lois had to have Hope that Jor-El cares about his blood, after all Jon wanted this. He is not a normal Earth boy, he had to have this.

"Dude!" This issue will rile some people up. Big time, I'm sure of it. I, myself, don't exactly know how I feel about it, but other than that the issue was fine. SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! So Jon is back... and apparently, he experienced some kind of time-displacement-relativity-blackhole-something because he is no longer ten. He is now seventeen and taller than his friend, Robin. I kinda hope that Jon will be deaged at some point, back to the ten-year-old boy he was. I was imagining him being mentored a bit by the original Superboy. But for now, for the sake of the story, I can go along with it. And the story may be interesting. At first, we have a touching reunion between father and his son. Then between mother and her son. With that one the son almost saw things, he would never be able to unsee. After that, it is story time and it looks like that Jor-El may not have all his marbles after all. So yeah, I will not be pouring buckets of hate on Bendis and I'll just wait and see what exactly happened to Superboy. more

The pacing is distressingly truncated. Problem is, the structure has been wonky through all of BMB's Superman, so I can't pin it entirely on this issue. For what it is--#7 has enough striking moments of characterization to be a success.

I was disappointed with issue#6 as I thought Bendis didn’t really do his best there, and was really hoping that issue #7 would make up for it. Boy, was I wrong. I think this is the worst from Bendis’ writing. Almost every other page felt cringy. One scene, were Lois is sexually flirting with Superman, is just not a reality. Their Son is missing for three weeks, who would be thinking about sex during this time ? The only thing that really saves this issue is the pencil by Reis. Great detail in all the characters, showing their emotion that connects the reader.

I don't always review Superman comics, or even follow them on regular basis, because I'm by no means a superfan of Superman, nor I'm an expert when it comes to his history, meaning, my judgement could possibly not be clear and precise enough. But even I, someone who reads about Supes occassionally, can call Jon's sudden transformation into a teenager a bunch of crap. Why? Just why? Bendis writes Young Justice, where Conner Kent is (well, technically will be) one of the main characters, and then he turned Jon into another teen. Of course, their personalities are different, but the age gap itself is what gives writers different foundations to tell different stories with completely different tones. Look at Super Sons and compare them to, le t's say, Red Hood's comics. Despite Damian and Jason both being Robins at some point of their lives, and both being Batfamily members, they are different. That's why we have this rotation of characters - when one grows and matures... Or at least is beaten to death with a crowbar and then is resurected by an immortal megalomaniac and becomes a psychopath himself, there's someone to replace them and fill the void that was created. With Jon now being almost an adult, we lose a kid in favor of ANOTHER teenager, and that's a huge problem. Conner is around in Young Justice, and Kara up until Andreyko's takeover of the series also was a regular teenager, so new Jon brings nothing new to the mix. I don't like this creative choice and find it backwards. The comic itself is not terrible by any means, maybe aside from Lois' twisted motivations, but I really don't understand why Bendis decided to clip his own wings. more

This is a 0/10 for sure. I even feel a 1 is being far too generous, so I consider your score to be basically praise how high it is. The “twist” was obvious, Lois acted in a manner that made no sense, and the rest of the issue was inane, poorly written dialogue that went nowhere. How this man is still writing Superman I do not understand.

Yup, and that's exactly my problem - I can't give this comic a fair review, because I'm not qualified to do so. All I can write is how angry and disappointed I am with Superboy's rapid aging, but when it comes to fairly rating the issue, it's beyond me :(

Some of the dialogue feels off and weird! Though damn why recently whenever Lois is in an issue, she has to be all sexy like. Kind of dumb of them to be talking out in the public for people to be watching them. Should have at least gone inside. The art is truly beautiful! The story itself is okay! Jon’s temple of doom story was okay but just to say that Jor-el is insane and that’s the end of the issue is pitiful! We already know that he’s insane and crazy from Man of Steel. From what I saw it’s more like Jon went crazy especially on those bad guys.

This is what some might call a f*ck you five. Only reason it's not a 1/10 is because of the art and the brief warm fuzzy feelings I got when Bendis is completely ignoring both established Rebirth continuity AND his own continuity established in his other Super book. He has spent 19 issues now doing what exactly? Split up the SuperFam for no apparent reason except to age up Jon Kent, and tell everyone that Jor-el/Oz is crazy. That's it! Sure, he spent a good chunk of time teasing Rogol Zaar, but he never made him a compelling villain beyond being a genocidal strongman - and then he made it all moot when he sucked earth out of the phantom zone at the end of #6. Then he billed this issue as the one where we - finally - find out about what Jon's been up to... Only to tell us what he was doing with Lois! We should've been given this snippet of the story over in Action 1004, as there is no f*cking way Clark's first questions after he reunited with Lois wouldn't have been about Jon. Bendis is spinning his wheels, there is no story here. I'm so upset with how much time and money I've wasted on this run I kind of hate myself at the moment. Even as I write this a 5 feels generous, but Superman is my favorite character so Bendis has gotten a longer leash that he would've on any other character. Sadly, I think it's time to officially remove both books from my pull more

This is really bad. The whole issue and story depends on us not knowing Jor-El is bad. But he is. We've seen it. Why is it a shock to anyone? Why did Lois leave her son with this clearly evil character after one mission? Even if he wasn't evil, that's some garbage parenting. This is so dumb because it contradicts all that Rebirth Superman/Action Comics strove to do. That whole era can be described as The Kent Family era. Lois would never leave her child with Jor-El. None of this would've even happened if these characters were in character. This is incredibly lame. Just like Man of Steel was.

This book is B-A-D. _-----Spoilers Ahead! Beware!!!!----- I don't even know where to start. I know! Let's start with the dialogue. The dialogue is awful. For one thing, Bendis is obsessed with 'poop'. He had Jon say the word in the dumbest manner. For some reason Bendis is obsessed with putting the word 'poop' in his recent DC comics or referencing 'poop'. He even had the Flash say "Cacapoopoo" and had Batman "empty his bowels" in an issue. Bendis has an unhealthy obsession with feces, from it being used as an adjective to actual act of defecating. I don't know if Bendis finds this hilarious (maybe he's a huge Adam Sandler fan) or if it's some gross fetish thing. But it is just gross and immature. I know I ask much from DC comics, but is it too much to ask that their heroes NOT be obsessed with 'poop'? I digress, ignoring the feces, Jon sounds more like a five-year old in the flashbacks than a ten-year-old and the way he talks is so different than any of his other appearances. Has Bendis never read a comic with Jon before (wouldn't be surprised). Also Lobo sounds like a Jersey Shore cast member. Another problem, Bendis has made Lois and Clark into the worst parents in the history of DC comics. They make Batman and Goku look better in comparison. They both abandoned their only son with a deranged maniac with no second thought and act shocked when bad things happen. This is Jor-El? The guy who kidnapped and tried to kill so many people during the Oz storyline? What's crazier is that they act like they never trusted Jor-El yet still abandoned Jon with him over dumb reasons. They are the worst parents on the planet. Even Bruce is a better father. Lois acts so upset over Jon's situation yet she's still the one that left him up there over petty reasons. Between this and her actions in Heroes in Crisis, one would expect that DC/Dan-Dildio are purposely trying to ruin the character (which wouldn't be the first time). They have made Lois into such a horrible self-fish character that it is disgusting. And then there's Jon. Bendis and DC have already ruined him by aging him up. They took part of what made hi interesting and twisted for their own sick pleasure and lazy drama. It's not even excuted well. Jon is 17, spent so many years away from his family, but still acts like a "kid"? (well, according to Bendis). Not to mention him taking pleasure in violence (something uncharacteristic of him). Even giving him a "scar to remind him that he's human" is just stupid hacky and cringy writing trying to sound deep. I remember in an interview that Bendis said he didn't want his Superman run to be like Zack Snyder's Superman. That his Superman was going to be more inspirational and hopeful. Yet what has Bendis accomplished thus far? Well, he aged up Jon taking away thousands of possible unique stories. He destroyed the interesting family dynamic from the rebirth era that was so great. He turned Superman and Lois into the WORST parents of the DCU. He retconned the destruction of Krypton (because heaven-forbid that Superman's origin doesn't have Bendis's sticky fingers all over it). He created two bland villain OCs (Rogal Zaar is the most generic villain ever. He's like a parody of comic book villains you see made fun of in cartoons). He genocided Kandor for shockvalue and to make Rogal Zaar look evil because lazy writing (I'm shocked he didn't have him shoot Barbara Gordon so we all know he's double evil! OoooooOOOOOOooooooh!!!). He turned Lois into a crazy person that hides from her husband. He hyped up the return of Nuclear Man then killed him off unceremoniously to make Rogal Zaar look good. And worst of all, he turned Superman into a sociopath that thinks about constantly killing Batman. For all of Bendis's bragging that he was going to make a Superman more light-hearted than anything Zack Snyder has done, he has made a Superman that is as bad if not worse. His Superman is a sociopath that dreams of killing his teammate and lets his family go alone with a supervillainn that tried to kill people without any investigation (at this point I expect Bendis to have Clark tell Jon he needs to let a bus of kids drown soon). This issue and everything Bendis has done with Superman has been the complete opposite of his Rebirth comics i.e fun and exciting. Bendis's Superman is nothing but the same old comic industry tropes and cliches with forced unatural drama that requires characters being dumb and is just trying too hard to be edgy and serious. He may wear his underwear on the outside, but this person is anything but Super. And this issue cements Bendis's Superman as terrible, unoriginal, and ,worst of all, unfun. On the plus side, the art was alright. more

What is the point of any of this? I have never liked Jor-El being back and I like all of this even less. Lois is suddenly a garbage parent, Jon is suddenly a garbage teen, and this comic is unsurprisingly garbage.

Tl;dr I did not think it would be possible for bendis’ writing to get worse on this book, he proved me wrong. Please save yourself the physical pain it will cause on your eyes and do not read it, buying it would be far too much and contribute to one of the worst books out there. On to the actual contents now, so know spoilers will follow: Issue ends on another “big twist/reveal”, because apparently bendis cannot continue a story without one. This is itself a showcase of a his lackluster writing in this book. About the “reveal” itself it’s basically “Man who was a villain is stated to be bad”. I stare blankly into space because it’s the only way I can react at something so blatantly obvious from even Man of Steel. The re was no reconciliation had between Superman and Jor-El or anything to indicate that after their last encounter he was not a villain. From what little we get to see from the journey the Superman Family took we now know Lois left her son in space with his “grandfather” after a single mission deciding she was not needed. Because I presume that ensuring Jon would not be influenced into following in the footsteps of Mr. Oz and continuing to instill in him the proper values and ethics of the person his parents want him to be is unnecessary in the face of just having superpowers. Great parenting shown here, thanks bendis. Going by that we’re meant to believe Jon is not an impressionable young man who needs no further guidance by his parents and is trusted to know what to do in case his grandfather, who was last seen as a villain, asks him to do something that goes against his values. But while I shudder to think of what Jon will reveal happened in the following “years” of his trip, as of now we are just left with a considerably older Superboy who was aged just to allow the writer to explore how parents would feel if they missed out on raising their child. He chose to sacrifice the development of a character for the chance to explore an idea; he will undoubtedly waste this opportunity and reverse before anyone else can actually work with it. It hurt to see Lobo make a short cameo, because he’s one more character to add to the list of those bendis has gotten wrong, but surprisingly what he says is the best advice Jon has gotten in this title. Seeing alien people worship Superman was ridiculous, because he actually strives to not be seen as someone who should be worshipped/relied on to that degree and while Superman has indeed assisted other planets in times of need the impact he’s had on the galaxy is far lesser than that of the GL Corps who has been outright shunned by the citizens of certain planets. The dialogue itself is poorly written, cringeworthy in more than one ocassion (Jon laughling at was is not even arguably a joke Jor-El makes comes to mind), and I can’t help but say he does not get a single character “right” in the entire issue. This is the worst issue in the run so far and it decidedly looks like it will not improve. Save yourself the hassle and avoid this title until a new creative team comes on board. more

Any hopes I had that this will make sense are gone now. Superman’s decision to let his wife and kid leave with Jor-EL, and Lois’ decision to leave Jon with Jor-EL makes even less sense due to the “shocking reveal ” that’s not really a shocking reveal. Not to mention Lois reasoning for leaving Jon behind and not telling Superman she’s back is not properly explored or explained. Lois reaction to seeing Jon again completely contradicts her behavior in Action #1004. Both the dialogue and Lois’ characterization continue to be extremely off. If what Bendis done to the character is not reversed, it will damage any chance he has of sticking around. I stuck around because I thought things would get better. It ha s not. more

I dropped the series and Action Comics after the AC issue where Lois plays dumb about living a fake marriage. Bendis clearly didn't want to write about a functionally married Superman or about a fun-loving 10 year old son of the world's most recognized hero. And Lois for all her strong character was shown to have no care for either husband nor son. And to boot, Jon is now going to have to fit in with a universe he's now 7 years too old for. I'm out till a new team.

Well, the art was great as usual. However, this issue crumbles the flimsy ground that all the previous issues, and I'm including Action and Man of Steel in this, stood on. The awful, out of character decisions Lois was written to make in Man of Steel and Action now somehow look even worst due to Jon declaring that his grandpa is so crazy that they have to do something about it. Also aging Jon up is an awful decision that wrecks the uniqueness he held as child superhero and what little supporting cast he had.

Wow, way to ruin all 3 Kents in one story Bendis. It's one thing to completely squander Jon Kent as character, but having Lois and Clark effectively ruin their only son's life by abandoning him in space with a murderous madman?? 1/10, this is as bad as OMD, maybe worse.
