Green Lantern #5

Green Lantern #5 is without doubt, the best issue of the series so far. While advancing the two plotlines, it is best at remaining character focused. Unbelievably, the entire creative team keep this at the forefront. While Thorne's story is the driver, MacDonald's depictions of Keli's constructs emphasize things about her character that work to subtly reinforce the narrative. Similarly, the emotional exchanges by Raney and Santucci between John and the people of Sergilion and John and the rest of the Quest Lanterns help the reader experience the conflict John feels. You SHOULD be reading this book and this is a perfect point to hook a new reader to get hooked by the characters! Read Full Review

If you're looking for big action and a contemplative narration about fear,Green Lantern #5 is going to be your jam. Thorne is subtly introducing new elements never before seen in this series and it's working to make the series feel new again. While I continue to be really impressed with this run of Green Lantern, this issue felt a bit off in how it presented its characters and its timeline but that could just lead to bigger and better things down the road with the explanation being something I'd love to see. You can't always count on that though and with that, I thought the art was great here, the action intense and I can't wait to see some of the reveals here be touched on more as our series progresses. Green Lantern #5 picks up where both the main story and backup story left off. The first half focuses on Teen Lantern's rampage on New Korugar fighting the Sinestro Corps, while the second half follows John Stewart and his side of things. The former is more action-packed but uses a couple overused storytelling tropes when it comes to analyzing Teen Lantern, the Sinestro Corps, Sinestro himself, and their relation to fear. Overall, the narration comes off as needlessly edgy. The second half follows John Stewart as he finally makes some progress finding other Green Lanterns. It's not exactly thrilling but it continues to explore John as an earnest leader and even sets up the next step for him in upcoming issues. Read Full Review

Green Lantern continues to suffer from uninspired storytelling and horrible pacing. We are five issues into the series and I can't say that the story is worth the $25 readers paid for it. Thorne would have been better left to tell his John Stewart story in a mini-series unencumbered with the rest of the characters he's been charged with handling. Five out of ten lanterns. I like how Teen Lantern still has kind of a disconnect from everyone with how she speaks Spanish despite the rings' power to translate. She's powerful with how she can take on the Sinestro Corps with the power of her gauntlet to the point of overriding some of their functions. But she needs a bit more discipline before she's a true Green Lantern. Then there's how John's status as a leader comes into effect, because the rest of the Corps are going to need it coming up.

It’s Keli vs (some of) the Yellow Lanterns. Which I enjoyed a lot. It’s always nice to see creative constructs and that’s what the fight brings to the table. Adding to that, it was recognizable who some of those constructs were before the narration explained it. The yellow lantern narrating Keli’s attack confronts her just as the United Planets arrive. It was fun speculating who the narrator is. On John’s side, the slavers have been defeated. Now the Sergilon population has to escape their planet before others can find them. There is some nice character work in John’s section of the title, and it makes me wonder how different Thorne’s original pitch was. From what I have heard, I assume John’s time on Sergilon would ha ve been a lot more fleshed out. The art is good but there are some inconsistencies. This time three artists are on the Issue. Raney and Santucci are joined by Andy McDonald, who draws I think the second half of Keli’s part. While Keli’s hair has changed since #1 quite a bit, it is jarring to see a change from straight hair to curls from one page to the other. It would be great if editors kept obvious details like that consistent. While I enjoy the art despite some flaws, Santucci is the one I like the most. Seeing him on only ten pages lessens the quality of the art a little. more

This was a pretty good issue, even if not much happened. I liked the narration about Sinestro. I'm so happy John is off that planet. I really did not care about that, and I hope we move onto something more engaging.

Why did they have to make Kelli transform into straight-haired and with a conventional mask? Looks like yellow-hooded "spoiler-person" undoes the construct so Kelli's real form appears. It's not just the hair - her real headgear is goggles of a different shape and fit than the mask, and I know the overall uniformed was changed in other ways. Why still with the Spanish? I've used translator apps before but was too tired this time. Guess I missed some things - why is John now able to leave the planet he's been stuck on for a year or more? Weren't these old ships already available? How does he still have operating GL tech on the new ship? There are surely explanations I missed? I'm thinking of dropping this.

I know perhaps nobody cares about Sinestro except me but I'm a huge fan of this character. Sinestro having a threesome is totally out of character. He is not that kind of villains who indulge in sex. Instead, he is a tyrant who addicts himself to power, to authority. Making him randomly have sex just falls to a new low. Obviously Thorne knows nothing about the GL franchise. He knows nothing about Sinestro either. I don't know why he insists on writing Hal Jordan's archenemy since everyone knows he loathes Hal. Perhaps because John Stewart is so bland that he doesn't have his own villain so he has to steal from Hal. Or perhaps Thorne just wants to ruin Hal's villain since his writing is sooooooo bad. Beyond that, Teen Lantern taking down Si nestro's elites is one of the most ridiculous scene I've read in GL comics in years. And Thorne is even ripping off Hal's story in Future States written by Robert Venditti, which is already a bad enough story. more

What? :)) I dropped this book after last issue and I came here only for the reviews. Turns out I made the right decision. What is that nonsense with Sinestro in a threesome? :)) That's ridiculous and totally a Thorne kind of thing. DC should be ashamed of themselves letting this guy ruin the Lanterns this way.

What? Sinestro would absolutely engage in carnal desires such as a threesome(which is only ever implied anyway). Did you even read his Cullen Bunn solo series?? Sikeston is not some prude or man above such things. He is principled but hes not a robot.

Sinestro had a relationship with lyssa in Cullen Bunn’s run. That’s totally different than having an orgy with some random women. Like you said, he is principled. That’s how he is different from other villains.

He’s not opposed to sex. I mean he was a married man and has a daughter. That’s different than having an orgy with abandon. Sinestro craves order.
