There's only so many plots out there and the undercover cop one has certainly been used a lot " but rarely this well. Grant Morrison is a weird writer whose writing style often goes off the deep end, but he's found a title that brings out the absolute best in his style. I did want to note the lettering by Comic Watch letterer of the year Tom Orzechowski, I adore when alternate fonts are used for emphasis which is employed several times here, as are the ubiquitous bell tones. Hal Jordan has taken a deadly assignment from the Guardians. Abandon the Green Lantern Corps to infiltrate Controller Mu's Blackstars. Hal has also been given permission to use any means necessary to maintain his cover and neutralize Controller Mu. I have a feeling things are going to get very violent for Hal Jordan. Grant Morrison used all of the building blocks he has placed throughout the early parts of his run to make The Green Lantern #5 a satisfying reading experience. Morrison did a fantastic job building up the tension around what Hal Jordan's latest mission is. Now that he has become directly involved with the Blackstars and adopted the name of Parallax what happens next is anyone's guess. While I have not always found Hal Jordan to be the unique, or exciting character in DC's stable, he is often a very interesting one. When taken out of his comfort zone and forced to question the things around him, he is great. In this respect I find myself applauding Morrison for finding something interesting to do with Green Lantern, that doesn't involve him simply battering things with constructs from his ring. There's a lot to unpack, as with much of Morrison's writing, but the shift in genre really makes this issue stand out and it is echoed in Sharp's artwork. While it fits in with the run so far, the horror element adds something different to this classically sci-fi oriented concept. Sharp and Morrison both do a fine job despite the awkward reveal by the Guardians regarding Hal's secret mission. Narrative-wise, it's a solid GL tale with revealing insights on where Jordan resides at this stage of his career, mind, and soul. But the character study doesn't hinder the developing plot, serving to accentuate it as events march onward. The change of setting from galactic patrol zones to a subterranean, labyrinthine world of undeath is refreshing. That's also where the art and color elevate the issue and make it truly satisfying. I haven't been the biggest fan of the Darkstars (who have basically assumed the role of the Sinestro Corps as the evil army to be defeated), but writer Grant Morrison provides an interesting way to use them here. Given that rogue Hal Jordan stories are far from new, there's plenty of history to help support the idea of Hal Jordan breaking from the Corps. DC Comics keeps rebranding its franchises, from Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps, to Green Lanterns (note the plural), and now THE Green Lantern, as if there is only one. But unless the Corps is completely defunct, its not really applicable, is it? Tying up loose ends, Emphasizing yet again why Hal Jordan is the most badass Green Lantern from the sector 2814, a nod to Parallax and THAT cliffhanger. Yep. Thats a good book! It sure is different from other super hero comics both the story aspects and the art. And HOT DAMN somebody go check Liam Sharp out because i think his hands are going to fall off! This is a monthly book that is totally on schedule every single month and the guy still manages to outdo himself everytime! But heres something else: the colors! Steve Oliff's colors over Liam's art are amazing! A perfect match! In fact, a three-way match!

Prelude: Now it's time for "Blackstar at Zenith". As the story starts to intertwine, let's see how Morrison and Sharp go with this issue. The Good: "I've fought armies of the dead, I've beaten down Gods and cosmic tyrants. I was possessed by a monster called Parallax. I've lived. I've died. I've been reborn. I've relived my Dad's death and every betrayal a thousand times. I'm a founding member of the Justice League of Earth, so let's get serious. I don't do do inner demons and I don't do regrets." Blackstar Parallax! I know I say it every time but I love Liam Sharp's artwork. Adam Strange! The Bad: Nothing. Conclusion: Man, this was a great issue. I loved every single bit of it.

Although it was kinda predictable as to what Hal was doing, this series has been very good. I understand if some don't like it because of how weird it is, but that's just how Grant Morrison is. His writing is like a tangled set of headphones, slowly, but surely it'll be unraveled. Can't wait for more!

THE GOOD: -This issue was so good. I think it's my favorite issue yet. -Yes! Liam Sharp's art hit all the right notes here. -I really liked seeing Hal go through all the different trials this issue. -I'm not going to waste words going through all the little details I loved in this comic. That would take too long. Just know this comic is pretty much the opposite of being "rough around the edges." The edges are the best part. Morrison and Sharp create an immersive universe like no other with this comic. -I think my favorite part of the issue was the weird zombie knight and his brides. That was just too cool. -The flashback to the first issue was well-timed and generally excellent. -This Blackstar Parallax idea is re ally intriguing. It's a compelling storyline. -Ooh. That ending's got me super excited. -For once, I liked Hal Jordan. I wouldn't exactly describe him as compelling, but seeing him fight all these creatures was just super satisfying. THE BAD: -I'm not into the Blackstar lady villain. The idea's neat, but the execution is bland. more

This issue had a lot of characters explaining everything instead of just showing it and that irked me. But the stuff after that, the last quarter of the issue I'd say, was really cool and I want to see where it goes. I hope next issue has less expositing about how horrible a challenge will be. This is probably obscure, but it reminded me of the beginning of the third Ratchet and Clank game, where you have to go through a Gauntlet of Death while an obvious comedic character narrates how grueling it is. Not the best thing to be reminded of when this is supposed to be taken seriously. Or is it?
