The issue is a fantastic start with highs and lows. There's lots of action, hope, despair, and more hope. It's a rollercoaster that's both escapist and a reflection on today's reality and what was. We're in a real world fight against a rise of far right ideology and fascism and a second rise of Nazi beliefs. To get a comic with some good ole Nazi punching is quite welcome. Read Full Review

While the characters weren't established for new readers as much as I would have liked, I did have a blast reading this issue, which seems weird for how dark the book's subject matter is.  The art is fantastic though and we have ourselves a team that I can't wait to see more of........ That was amazing! I knew nothing about the Freedom Fighters but it didnt matter because that first issue was so good! It presents very well the world were about to go into. Its very "America, OH Yeah!" but thats not a problem, of course. The art is STUNNING! Eddy Barrows did an amazing job, as always. Great script! Robert Venditti is a great writer, in my opinion. Were in for a treat! I think thats going to be the "underrated series" of 2019. (i hope not. I hope it sells well and people talk about it). Now i need to read old Freedom Fighters stuff!

Damn that was good. No that was a awesome reading. At first I was a little lost, and I was not shure I will like this dark story. But in fact I was easily transported in it. It's a good reminder of what we escape. The Jessy Owen character is a very nice touch. Cover - Not just the cover. The starting point of the story. 2/2 Writing - I loved all of it. 3/3 Arts - Their is some part I didn't find very clear at first (Like what happen with the flag) but it's a awesome work. 3/3 Feeling - I want more of it. 2/2

THE GOOD: -This issue has some great political themes, I hope they will expand on those, but its a solid start. -This comic does great with its premise. It's similar to some elements of the Man in the High Castle, but it definitely feels like much more than just that withs superheroes. -I love Eddy Barrows's art. His drawing for the Plastic Men Nazis was especially amazing. -The death of the original Freedom Fighters was pretty dark but amazing. -I thought Venditti did a great job with this issue. His writing was really good, and often times had a great subtle way of telling the story. "Heil this, Ratzis." The new Freedom Fighters are pretty cool, looking forward to seeing more of them. -The Uncle Sam scene was a lso really good in my opinion. This comic would make such an awesome movie, and it would require very little change. THE BAD: -My only complaint is that the end wasn't as good as the rest of the issue, this will definitely be a first issue that reads better in trade. more

This issue was pretty intriguing. I like the tone set here. And it wasn't annoyingly preachy in its message, like it totally could have been. They didn't go for "Trump is Hitler", for instance. Which unfortunately isn't so ridiculous an idea in the comic industry. I'm sure one of the Vertigo titles will do it though.

I literally had no idea what Freedom Fighters was when I picked it up last month. I saw that Robert Venditti (Hawkman, X-O Manowar) was the writer and had the fierce visage of Uncle Sam staring me down and I was sold on the look alone. The book is extremely dark. I hazard to say its the darkest comic I've read since X-Men: Age of Apocalypse storyline from the '90s. This series is also set in an alternate timeline. In this scenario, the Nazi's won WWII and in doing so extended it's the sphere of influence to America. All seems lost until a new group of Freedom Freedom fighters reveal themselves publicly. If you're a fan of historical fiction you've seen or heard of this alternate timeline before. Think Wolfenstein with Superheroes an d you have Freedom Fighters. I am reading this issue a month after the book was released and still want to be purposely vague about plot details. That being said the opening of the series totally subverts expectations and delivers us into an extremely grim situation by the end of the issue.  Freedom Fighters #1 was a great read and I'm totally on board with seeing how this story develops. The designs from Eddie Barrows are imaginative. The world is bleak and the art direction completely captures the atmosphere of the setting. The creative direction for the issue is amazing. It's not a unique plot but it grabs you by the throat and forces you to pay attention. I'm pretty sure I've read similar stories before but Robert does a great job pitching this world and I've always been a sucker for a good pitch.  more

This concept isn't new, The Man In The High Castle is the same idea, but when you bring a real person like Jesse Owens into the story, it starts to feel uncomfortable. In this case, the idea is to make the reader feel uncomfortable, but it's up to you if that's the kind of book you want to digest.

The comic looks good, with fine art and excellent colouring. The story is promising, although as a British person, I did find the "America is the home of liberty and equality" message to be both annoying and ludicrous, especially given the inclusion of Jesse Owens as a character - a man who when he won his gold medals in 1936, was not only shunned by FDR on his return home, but was also legally a second class citizen in large sections of the USA. Toning this down would have helped considerably. Nonetheless, this is a good comic, and if they can be just a little less parochial and jingoistic in future issues then it could rise to the realms of excellent, rather than good.

Comic Book Review Scale (0-10) From 0-1 Story must keep me engaged: Freedom Fighters will keep you engaged in the story from the first page until the last. 1-2 Must be able to Understand the Story: From start to finish the comic makes it very clear what is going on, the time jump was very fluid and didn't bring any confusion, the potential main character was briefly shown for 3 pages and leaves you wanting to know more about him and where he went off too. 2-3 Visuals/Artwork must make sense and be consistent: Artwork was consistent 3-4 Visuals/Artwork must be able to tell the story: Artwork flows perfe ctly with the story 4-5 Visuals/Artwork must be pleasing: The artwork was pleasing but did expect more Nazi Flags/army soldiers 5-6 Cover Artwork: Variant cover is very nice, the reason I picked this up 6-7 Keep the reader wanting more: The ending left me wanting the second copy but no big cliffhanger 7-8 Catches me off guard (story/art): The ending didn't do much for me the beginning caught me off guard when they killed the original freedom fighters and time jumped 50 years into the future 8-9 Makes me want to talk about it ( to people outside the comic community: Don't think I'll talk to anyone about this not much to say 9-10 Re-readability: Doubt I will reread this more of a one and done more
