Aug 31, 2021A great event needs to hook readers from the start, and that usually means some big explosions or other chaos. But James Tynion IV, in his final Bat-story, manages to hook us immediately with a simple conversation between two evil men. Read Full Review

Aug 31, 2021Batman: Fear State: Alpha #1 is a fantastic Gotham story. Every one of the creators seems to revel in the creation of fear as the foundations of the plot are set. Multiple different books will spill out of this one, and yet it feels complete and compact. Scarecrow is being cemented and a masterful villain when treated well, and Tynions understanding of characters is fantastic. Fear State is here, and it seems like it will stay. Read Full Review

Sep 01, 2021Batman Fear State Alpha is a good jumping-off point for Tynion's comic event. All the players are on the board, and there are numerous plot threads to develop and resolve. Batman fans, both current and lapsed, have something to connect with within this event. The next few months and multiple titles will tell if they leave satisfied. Read Full Review

Sep 01, 2021Batman: Fear State Alpha is a solid start to the next Batman event. There's an awareness about it all that acknowledges what has come before and works it into the story. It works as a great introduction to the event while really laying things out for long time readers. There's a lot packed into the story and as far things go, a solid start for what's to come. Sep 03, 2021Despite the talent on show, this book is an advert for the coming event, which is going to cover a range of books and characters that I don't really care about, I get that this is the marketing point of a crossover, to get readers to buy all the books. But I do worry, that with DC's focus on a new Batman that Bruce Wayne may be relegated to a lame duck. Hopefully this is not going to be the case as for me, there is only one Batman of present day Gotham City. Read Full Review

Sep 01, 2021Considering this is an oversized issue with no action and just multiple scenes of characters talking, I can't recommend this with the highest of praise " especially if you've been keeping up with the Bat-books. Now, if you haven't been reading the Bat-books, then this is the perfect issue to prepare you for what's to come! You also get the pleasure of some of Tynion's best execution concerning dialogue, and incredible art by the talented Ricardo Federici " even if they are kind of wasting his talent here. Sep 03, 2021As a setup issue, this issue probably needed its own setup issue to give respect to the myriad of plots, characters and McGuffins that the event will bring into play. This issue will fill casual readers with horror at the complexity in which a relatively simple, "bad guy takes over the town" story occurs. Read Full Review

Sep 01, 2021The most intriguing part of the comic is the presence of Harley Quinn (who is trying to restore Poison Ivy's psyche) and Jace Fox, the soon-to-be Batman replacing Bruce Wayne. Generally speaking, this comic mostly feels like it's playing the same tune as last year's "Joker Wars," but with a different instrument. Read Full Review

Aug 31, 2021Fear State Alpha #1 is an issue fighting against itself. On the one hand, it wants to prep readers for Fear State, but at the same time it assumes you are familiar with all the moving pieces. This recap also comes at the expense of long exposition dumps, further working against the issue. If you are looking to get caught up before Fear State starts next week and have no prior knowledge, this might be for you. If you are a current reader, Fear State Alpha #1 is not worth the price of admission. Read Full Review
