Amy Reeder takes on writing, art and colour duties (with Gabriela Downie in lettering) in a brilliant new reinvention of this character, which subverts most of the magical girl narratives. The idealized fantasy transformation of a child into an adult in a fantasy world turns into an adolescent who doesn't magically grow and also doesn't live an stereotypical adventure of the right versus the wrong. The moving and compelling art easily makes this first chapter shine like a precious gem.

Hellions #4
September 16, 2020

Hellions ends its first arc in a traumatic but bonding conclusion, combining bloody and raw art with dark coloring with an issue in which everyone has their heart a little tore apart. The story clearly calls back to Louise Simonson and Chris Claremont's Summers drama in "Inferno," and the tribute and themes it takes focusing in Havok, the ignored brother, and Madelyne, the unreal girl, is bittersweet and perfect. In the middle of a Krakoan reboot era that makes it impossible to tidy all loose ends or explore all characters, Zeb Wells makes sure we understand this team's growing bond deeply, and that Madelyne's loose end is tied closely, even showcasing the Quiet Council's hypocrisy and imperfection. The dysfunctional-but-clear-bond between these characters finally explodes when they all laugh together as they are "a bunch of crazy sons of %$!&!". There's a certain joy here for me as someone with a mental illness and survivor of systemic mental health abu

Stohl stays true to its characters and sets up an effectively mysterious tone and story, with Ferreyra's art providing it with a rainy and jazzy visual soundtrack. With some of the greatest themes in Spider-Man present (like his need to do everything in his hands to help others), and some really sweet character interactions, the book promises a story that we're eager to see unfold.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Too Long a Sacrifice #1
July 20, 2020
|
|
"Too Long a Sacrifice" promises, like the series is based on, a lot for past and future. It is a mystery noir story with wonderful character work that vibes with the dialogues. It has conflict that promises to be way more than what meets the eye. And it definitely is a posthumous tribute to Ren Murat Auberjonois' brilliant role that is done with care and love.
