The Immortal Thor #1 is a good issue that new readers can dive into. You don't need to know what happened in the previous volume, but it'll help really appreciate things. Just knowing it's Thor without his memory is enough, but with Al Ewing, that might not even be the case. Mortal Thor #1 is a worthy continuation of the saga of the Odinson at Marvel Comics. Those seeking a good place to start reading the recent adventures of Thor and Loki would do well to check this issue out, and it will also appeal to those who wish to continue the story started in Immortal Thor. Ewing, in my opinion, is a master at his craft who Im not even sure is at his peak powers yet, so every new series launch from him is full of potential. (Hes even managing to make Mary Jane Venom work, which is nothing short of admirable.) If anyone has earned the right to be let cook, its him. But the whole team is delivering great work, with Pasqual Ferrys scratchy, scraggly art fitting the story and Matt Hollingsworths expectedly great colors making every page look vibrant. Even the lettering by VCs Joe Sabino is worth pointing out, and that job is often a thankless task that at best goes unnoticed. While you would obviously get more out of this first chapter if youve been following along since the beginning, The Mortal Thor #1 is a (pun unintended) worthy middle part that also serves as an unusually decent entry point. Nice start of a new run of Thor, this time we find the god of thunder humbled living the life of a mortal with no idea of who he really is. We are clearly picking up after some other story arc, but the writer Al Ewing does an incredible job of getting the reader up to speed. Speaking of the writing, it is so tight and on point, I was impressed with every page turn. Ive seen folks say that they don’t like the art by Pasqual Ferry - I thought it was perfectly fine and up to the task. That being said the Alex Ross cover was brilliantly perfect. I’ll be adding a Thor comic to my pull list for the first time … ever … I highly recommend this book!
Ferry was not my favorite Thor artist but I do think he brings a nice dynamism to the violent portions of the book that works pretty well. Here's hoping he has a chance to stick with the book throughout this particular act. Anyway, feels like a slow burn, but I dig it. I happen to enjoy the runs where Thor has a human avatar or form just as much as the crazy high concept stuff, so leaning so heavily into this aspect after the book has largely been about the opposite since the start of the Jason Aaron run is a nice change of pace.
Art is less than impressive and the story feels like its a bit too familiar but it's fine writing and Thor fans should enjoy it enough. Overall it's too little for the price of the book but that's most modern big 2 books so I'd advise Thor fans to continue picking up their favorite character, as the book is more than acceptable, but for the casual fan looking for a new book I'd save my money.
I think we can all agree that the art is *ss. As the comic prices are going up, just an Alex Ross cover doesn't make the cut anymore. This is an ongoing series and I don't see a lot of people/readers picking up a second issue.
Storywise is aight, just ok. Nothing new, mysterious and exciting.

Sorry, Like Ewing but I really just can’t get into Ferry. (And it honestly feels like I’ve already read this story once or twice before.)
