Simply put, but you are 100% correct!!
This was a more casual experience compared to the final end of the first 10 issues. With a new artist Kirk, the art has taken back a bit compared to Gary Frank who was really getting good. Peter David still has a charm that what would seem like boring outings or table talk to more interesting life-like moments.
Mattie has an outburst during the trial of the store owner who murdered her more
Linda goes on a double date with Cutter, Mattie and Dick, and the comedian is Cutter's ex. Supergirl goes to investigate a strange cave.
This annuals best short story is the one written by Chuck Dixon hands down. While it has nothing to do with what is going on with Supergirl's main story by Peter David, it offers a horrifying glimpse into the hell of some random character being used by some evil planetary corporation mining for rare minerals on a hot planet.
The character as an adult speaks no words at all, we just see more
Legends of the Dead Earth. Earth is Dead. Those who once might have called it home are long scattered to the endless stars. But in that scattering, on a thousand different worlds, by a thousand different ways...Earth's greatest legends live on. What connection does a renegade tooljerk have to Supergirl?
Here Peter David again puts Supergirl to the fire literally (as seen on the cover of the ish) and most importantly metaphorically. Tempus blows up Linda's home and from what it looks like he murdered her parents before she could do anything about it. We discover further that Buzz has been laying the foundations of everything up to this moment. From corrupting the innocent Linda, to even using Chak more
Supergirl gets some unexpected help in her climactic battle with Tempus Fugit and Buzz in "Tempus Fugit."
We find out more about Buzz in this ish, I was close but he's not Lucifer. Buzz is a demon that was exiled from hell, all the demons exiled ran to space, other worlds or earth like him. But Buzz in his time away from hell turned himself into some kind of cosmic business man and made a mysterious deal with an unnamed force to turn Supergirl into their personal weapon.
Buzz is still evil more
A clean-cut Buzz arrives at the Danvers home for his blind date with Linda, and proceeds to cause all manner of psychological havoc in "My Dinner With Buzz."
Wow Peter David's writing style and Gary Frank's 90's-esque art really combine here to create an almost perfect comic in so many ways. From learning more about Linda's past and how Supergirl handles it, to the seamless flow panel by panel that made this read nothing but pure bliss for me. The colors really popped as well in here.
We really dive into Linda's psyche to understand why she more
It's a look back at how Buzz initiated Linda Danvers into a world of darkness in "Art History."
Not the best in the line-up so far, basic story of how Rampage gets betrayed in her human life to be set up in some financial fraud scheme. Superman intervenes since Rampage is his friend Kitty Faulkner.
Supergirl gets some help from Superman in dealing with a rampaging Rampage in "Trust Fund."
The story now is a bit less dark than the last three issues and is going back to a more science fiction theme now bringing back Chemo! It was nice to have Kara visit Jonathan and Martha Kent back in Kansas. She didn't tell them what happened to her mixing it up with Linda Danver's soul. This makes me wonder at what point will she talk to Superman about what happened?
Chemo started to g more
Supergirl visits with Ma and Pa Kent in Kansas, while Chemo rampages across Leesburg in "Chemical Imbalance."
Gorilla Grodd uses Supergirl for a short period to do his bidding. She breaks out of it when he tries to make her throw Linda's mother into a pit of fire. When she breaks out of it she has an intense fight with Grodd, strangely an icicle kills Grodd by piercing him into his head. This is not Kara's doing but most likely Buzz or someone higher working the chess board.
Supergirl fights to break free of Gorilla Grodd's control in "Belly of the Beast."
This has a special guest appearance of Gorilla Grodd! Using the heart of Darkness Grodd turns the little town of Leesburg into a primordial soup of insanity. Chakat was defeated last issue epically by SUpergirl when she fought him in his own realm. My favorite part was when she figured out how to get rid of him. She tore off his nail and used it to cut him and threw it across the demonic realm. Th more
With the world in darkness, the inner beast emerges from the people of Leesburg in "And No Dawn to Follow the Darkness."
This is where we find out that the soul Kara now shares her life with was a twisted and evil soul who murdered did strange sexual things with the cult that attempted to sacrifice her for Chakat. Sharing a soul means she shares all the memories as well, and she now has to live a double life. As Linda Danvers she has Linda's mom and dad while also as Kara she has Jonathan and Martha Kent who raised more
Buzz forces Linda to relive some brutal memories while Supergirl stands (or flies) between Chakat and his dimensional crossing in "Cat's Paw."
So I will go back in read the last short volume of 4 issues to understand this whole notion of Supergirl becoming some kind of protoplasm experiment of Lex Luthor. It sounds really 90s but I am curious now. Nonetheless Peter David was given a difficult task to correct a strange choice in Supergirl's character and I have to say this was the best solution for the time. While it may have been better more
The connection between Linda Danvers and Supergirl is revealed, while Buzz and Chakat conspire in the shadows in "Body & Soul."
Okay so this ish really throws a ton of bullshit at your face and then it drops a piano on your head.
We go from this entire bs scene where Ruthy who is not a warrior or has not shown any prowess besides lucking out and killing a giant dinosaur with one blow has an equal fight with the genocidal maniac Krem who has killed god knows how many people. All she does is kick him a few times i more
Krem’s fate revealed! As Supergirl continues her battle against the Brigands, Ruthye squares off against this most vile villain in hopes of avenging her father and completing their mission. Will justice be served on both accounts? Or will our heroes fail? You won’t want to miss thrilling conclusion of the acclaimed miniseries that has changed K...
This is by far the best ish in the series, the art is magnificent here.
However it still suffers from Tom King-Itis and it really shows here. Tom really tries to impress the reader here with some of his greatest hits on "wisdom". Clearly after reading and being pleased by "The Analects of Confucius", King miracuosly summoned the very soul of Confucius and imparted this ancient piece of more
It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for…the capture of Krem! With the fugitive in custody, Supergirl must now deal with his allies, the ungodly Brigands! To stop them once and for all, she must leave Ruthye behind with the man who killed her beloved father. Can she trust the young girl to let the villain of our story live long enough to stand...
Wow I can't imagine what everyone was smoking to give this such praise. It must just be the colorful art because otherwise the story is still really bad and the pacing a slog. And again the cursing is so redundant and off putting because the artstyle feels like it is aimed at 5 year olds. So one can't help but feel like they are reading a well drawn, colored book that was written, edited and appr more
The traumatic secrets of Supergirl’s past are revealed as our heroine races to the edge of the universe to escape Krem and his latest weapon! The murderer of young Ruthye’s father has gotten his hands on a Mordru globe and plans to use it to make our hero disappear forever. Can she save herself and the young girl’s future in the process? Sheâ...
While this is so far th most bearable ish, it still sucks. The art is top notch here, the monsters, the deadly planet with a green sun that was made to kill superman is all awesome. Kara is weak and unable to defend herself, and so Ruthy is holding the line until the green sun sets and Kara can power back up. But throughout this beautifully renditioned ish, the writing itself turned reading throug more
Supergirl steps into an ancient trap, stranding her and Ruthye on a planet of nearly perpetual night. Now, the woman of steel must call on every remaining ounce of strength to combat the monsters left on this world to kill any super unlucky enough to end up on its surface.
Just... just when I think Tom King has started to get it. Just when I think he has read up a bit on the character and I will be happy to finally give this book the score that the art deserves, he burns it all down again in the blink of two pages.
There it is again - the out of character cursing... the care-not attitude that is the opposite of everything the character has stood for. Des more
Supergirl sets her sights on the Brigands, a group of dastardly nomads hell-bent on slaughtering all they come across. Nowshe must follow their path of destruction to find the fugitive they've been hiding who set her on this intergalactic journey in the first place!
So I've made a mistake. Krypto is not dead. But me thinking this only proves King is a horrible writer. Why?I went back to issue #1 to see where I misread Krypto's death and here's what the last few panels say. "The mender explained that there had been hunting poison on the arrows-- it didn't affect people too bad, but it was killing the animal." "He could save the pup, but he would need a hefty s more
Supergirl sets her sights on the Brigands, a group of dastardly nomads hell-bent on slaughtering all they come across. Nowshe must follow their path of destruction to find the fugitive they've been hiding who set her on this intergalactic journey in the first place!
Okay so where to begin on this, lots of thoughts from this sh*t ish. I'm still bummed about how Krypto's death was handled like nothing happened. I mean this is KRYPTO. King completely glossed over any emotion this could have brought out of Kara, but I guess we can't afford Kara to look or be vulnerable because muh feminism...It comes off though like Kara didn't give a crap after he died. Supergirl’s journey across the cosmos continues! Her hunt to bring the killer Krem to justice brings her and the young alien in her care to a small planet, where they discover that there are still some very small minds, even on the outer edges of the galaxy. The cold welcome the locals give the Woman of Steel makes her suspicious enough to go loo...
I'm starting this off with a 1 out of 10 for Krypto. Really, you had to kill off Krypto? Is that what we have to look forward to in the Supergirl movie? What BS, now we get stuck with Ruthye who is as interesting as Bebe Newell playing Lilith on Cheers but atleast Bebe is funny and talented. The story is already crap, and Tom King continues his campaign of over-narration and he completely missed th more
After the shocking conclusion of last issue, Supergirl and her new friend Ruthye find themselves stranded with no way to pursue Krem, the murderous kingsagent. Each moment this fugitive roams free, the more beings become dangerously close to dying by his hand. There is no time to lose, so our heroes must now travel across the universe the old-fashi...
I'm reading this through the deluxe edition because I want to get an idea on what the upcoming Supergirl movie will be like. Not being a fan of Tom King on how he has been handling WW and Trinity so far this is tolerable compared to those atrocious depictions. Nonetheless I can;t help but feel like Kara is out of character and written like a trashy whore you would meet at 3AM in a dark part of the more
Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Sup...

The Power of Shazam! (1994) #1 By Jerry Ordway Since this series for some reason is non-existent on this websiteI wrote a review for it on Substack for personal record: https://giofio.substack.com/p/the-power-of-shazam-1994-issue-1
Just EPIC and totally underappreciated series...
There are some amazing two page splashes of the robo dragon that look stunning.
The highlights of this ish however is the conversations between the Mandarin and Tony. Plus all of this insanity and the creation of the monster turns out to all be a test he Madarin made for Tony Stark. For what ends we don;t really know but can more
While the Avengers battle the Mandarin's ‘Dragon of Heaven', a down for the count Iron Man stares down his adversary. Tony Stark's never been this helpless against the Mandarin- will his Avenging teammates pull off a rescue…or will Shellhead secure his own escape?
So Tony literally dies for a moment, and Natasha uses her electric bracelets to bring him back to life. A cool detail more
Having barely escaped Spymaster, Iron Man's in no fighting form. But the return of the Mandarin has Tony heading into battle…and clinging onto life! Black Widow guest-stars.
Another solid issue here, it immediatly starts off with Tony being chased by Whiplash. WHiplash is jacked, donned in S&M gear and proves to be pretty deadly for Iron Man.His whips are so fast even against Iron Man's speed and technological advantages that he overcomes Iron Man multiple times. Tony blieves the whips must work at a "molecular level", since he can feel his armor becoming brittle wit more
Whiplash and Spymaster are back! Iron Man's deadliest foes return to the super-criminal scene…and with deadlier, advanced tech! Plus, is this the end of Tony Stark's secret identity?
One thing you have to admit about these old comics even these 90s one, you were getting your monies worth in terms of length, size and dialogue. these comics take me a bit longer to read through than most of the modern comics I go through like water no joke. But these issues feel like really good animated episodes you would watch on TV except you would have to imagine the animation in your head. An more
A ‘Live Kree or Die' tie-in! The Kree plan their first maneuver against Earth, while Tony confronts Carol Danvers about her drinking. The Supreme Intelligence is coming for the Avengers…and innocents will perish!
I enjoyed seeing Black Widow and Iron Man team up together in tis issue. Some beautiful old school artwork in this ish, from the character designs to the simple but sweet environmental backdrops or social settings.
Tony and Widow make a good match but to be honest TOny seems to fit well with any woman, I would even go as far to say that he is the Clark Gable of comic books. Devilish, c more
Why is Natasha Romanoff, A.K.A. Black Widow, turning to Tony Stark for help? The Avengers may have gotten themselves in too deep- but with what?
Tony handles Firebrand like Superman pretty much, hacking his less complex suit that contains his energy and using it against him and turning him into a huge laser to cut a new land path for the lava to flow in and save the people.
Firebrand is insane and was created to be even worse by the terrorist organization Flaming Sword. Using his insanity to have him believe he is fighting fo more
Black Widow's on back-up! Check out the fiery (and final), confrontation between Firebrand and Iron Man!
So Tony finds out early on in the ish that Pepper and Happy went through a divorce and he feels extremely narcissistic for not seeing this. Even though he was out of the picture for a while, he still blames himself for not being able to read the situation so to speak.
