Historically, I am not much of a Vertigo fan; I always feel that with their main characters having so much history, I kind of missed the jumping on point. With Hex Wives however, there is no such issue. This is a totally new spin on the age-old men vs women and the subjugation of the genders, of which at times, allow for both to enjoy the upper hand, just not at the same time. With pacing being a a potential problem to overcome, the book is an interesting take, with engaging characters and enough of a selection of hooks and hints to keep the reader's attention. Overall Hex Wives is shaping up to be one of Vertigos new must-read series. The series has so much dramatic and comedic potential that I'm interested in seeing which direction they go and where we find our witches next. The board is set and all of the pieces are present, so what Blacker, Andolfo and the team do next will definitely determine just how far the series will go. I foresee some very interesting scenes in the future of the ladies discovering their true identities and to be quite honest I'm excited to go along for the ride. Read Full Review

I did give the art an 8. Now to be fair I am an art snob, I love all forms of art. I think the art is great, what I didn't like about it was some of the facial expressions the lines in the face where drawn a little harsher then I like it but seriously that is me nitpicking. Its a fascinating first issue, and Blackers story has the potential to be something truly unique if it can only find the right focus. Theres a real potential appeal to empowerment in this series, with a group of women who have lost those magical abilities which define them, a corollary to how women have been marginalized for centuries. This book has the potential to gaze into the nature of that marginalization from an appealing horror-fantasy angle. Read Full Review

The issue later shows us the side of man and their plan to defeat the king running coven. This is where we then cut to modern day (2008) and things take a drastic turn in seeing the witches in a completely different light. A brilliantly timed cliffhanger left me eagerly awaiting issue 2. I'd highly reccomend you pick this up this week it's captured my attention like some kind of spell. A must read this Halloween. Read Full Review

This is a fascinatingly creepy concept, but unlike Border Town, it feels a bit like a slim one. I'm not sure how much mileage this comic can get out of the story before things go to hell and the witches exact their bloody vengeance, but I have a feeling it's going to be a very entertaining ride when it happens. A new story by Ben Blacker, that is equal parts fantasy action and social commentary, delivers pretty strongly in issue 1. The twist, with the Stepford Wives's like prison reveal, at the end of the book keeps this feeling original enough, that continued reading feels warranted. Read Full Review

There's a lot of potential in this first issue to grow into something significant. There's just not enough here to tell if it will, or even what direction it will take. There's a lot still hidden from the reader that should be interesting to discover. While not overwhelming, it's a solid start, despite a lack of identification with any particular character, as none have been individualized to stand out as the lead. The artwork by Mirka Andolfo is great although seeing her draw gore is odd given her clean style. It works well for the housewife scenes but is not the right fit for the gore. It feels more like cartoon violence and gore like a failed Bugs Bunny experiment than something from Vertigo. Read Full Review

This was a lot of fun. Great twist on the last page. I could do without the gore, but it wasn't too bad. I'm interested to see what happens next.

I was expecting this to be something very SJW, without anything else. While it gets there at some points, and that is ostensibly the message, it manages not to be awful. It's nothing amazing, but I didn't mind it.

The captions in the first half are a pain to read at the same time as the word bubbles. Once the captions stop, the book gets much smoother and provokes a lot of questions. It's difficult to gauge from this first issue if this is something I want to stick with, I need more to go on.

The story is hard to follow and make not enough sense. I'm totally disinterested ! Cover - Good but not really in relation. 1.5/2 Writing - I don't like it at all. 1/3 Arts - I find he copy Joelle Jones but not as good as her. Her & the editor know well the ressemblance with her doing the cover. 2/3 Feeling - I try it, but they fail hooking me. 0/2

I think that this had such a neat premise but they really did not sell it well. Would have been way more into it if it had started with them being the stereotypical housewives and slowly revealed the truth. As it is, I was disappointed.
