Wolverine: Infinity Watch #1

Wolverine Infinity Watch #1 is a wonderful set-up for an intriguing story. In reality, this should have been the book to bring Wolverine back into the Marvel Universe proper. Duggan succeeds here where Charles Soule failed because he's not trying to add anything new to the character, but put him in a new situation, with stakes and characters that Logan has rarely had to deal with. Adding Loki to the mix is an inspired choice as well, as the two characters will play well off each other. Andy MacDonald's art is detailed and expressive and it will be great to see what he can do now that Duggan has gotten all the exposition out of the way. This is a pitch-perfect first issue. A good issue that adequately sets up a new mission for Logan, pairs him with an odd character and sets in motion a story that should feel shiny and new given the circumstances. Does it offer answers? The issue is an interesting start and attempts to put together a story years in the making. The task isn't enviable and beyond difficult to make it clear and entertaining for old and new readers. The Return of Wolverine saga continues only this time in a more satisfying matter. This issue does it's best to sort out the entire mess that was created in the first place, while it stinks of not being the plan initially, I'm still OK with it because for now its just some comic booky fun. A lot of this issue is spent re-contextualizing the whole Duggan Infinity saga thus far to explain away Wolverine's involvement. Turns out it was Old Man Phoenix all along! Kind of handwavy and unsatisfying, in my opinion. But whatever, Loki and Wolverine are a fun combo. I hope this will be fun.

The only decent way to keep beating the dead Infinity Wars horse at this point is to do it ironically, and I think this absurd, self-aware, semi-parody story is off to a good start. I hope it sticks with the goofy "Loki and Logan are partnered up as the wackiest cops in the Infinity Stone precinct" tone. It doesn't have the reader engagement or the artistic legs to go deeper and darker, so let's hope it stays light.

I'm not entirely sure why Wolverine has to be the main hero in this series. Maybe we'll find out later, or maybe Marvel just wanted to make some use of him for the time being. Nevertheless, the story itself is pretty interesting, being a direct spin-off from the so-so Infinity Wars event. This issue in general wasn't anything spectacular (save for the inclusion future Phoenix Logan), but as it seems to be building up to something cool with the new direction of the Infinity Stones, hopefully that's what we'll get.

More mediocrity from Infinity Wars. Did anyone need a sequel to that awful series? Well, you asked for it. It's here. And the main villain is... A Chitauri, the most ridiculous alien race in comics. That said, the concept of the Infinity stones gaining agecy and going to strangers on Earth is interesting, but not enough to tolerate sloppy storytelling and lackluster art. Skip

Not as messy as Infinity Wars. But not good either. Since it is an almost direct sequel to Infinity Wars, it's still pretty bad. Messy storytelling, odd choices, etc.
