Wolverine #50

All Wolverine fans need to read this comic from beginning to end! Wolvie has so many interactions with various characters throughout the 50 issues, and then it all wrapped up with his most annoying and arguably most evil nemesis: Sabretooth. Wolverine #50 offers some of the most violent art you'll ever see in a Wolverine ending that certainly puts a pin in the relationship between Sabretooth and Wolverine. I can't say this finale was as meaningful as other chapters, but the visuals don't disappoint. Plus, Larry Hama offers up a great Jubilee and Wolverine tale not to be missed. Read Full Review

Wolverine #50 wraps things up and celebrates 50 years more with a whimper than a bang. The comic isn't bad but it also doesn't quite excite either. It's perfectly fine wrapping up the story arc and the series. My only gripe is that the final showdown felt a little rushed. I probably would have preferred that it happen over two issues, but it's not a huge gripe. Even though it was rushed, it was brutal and satisfying. The final double spread before the reveal of the outcome was simple and great. The art was also quite good. As a bonus, the backup stories were also pretty good. I almost never read backup stories, I'll skim them to see if they're worth my time and 90% of them aren't. These were.

Plot Bad Seed activates a Sentinel and attacks all the Exiles, when suddenly Sabretooth kills Bad Seed and Wolverine reproaches him for his lack of scruples. Wolverine uses the armor that Forge gave him, which in turn causes his mutant generation factor to recover. . Wolverine has the Muramasa saber and is ready to eliminate Creed. Sabretooth had an ace up his sleeve by using Krakoa technology to remove Wolverine's armor, but Logan was already recovered and the final battle begins, where Wolverine literally leaves him in pieces to Sabretooth. Man, this run was weird. It almost feels like, despite Percy writing so many issues of Wolverine, that we never really got a classic Wolverine story out of him? There's something about this run where, as enjoyable as it was, there was also a hollowness to it. And that remains the same with this finale. Nothing here is bad comics. It's all solid. But I don't necessarily feel satisfied with it.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the two backup stories, I probably would have given this an 8.5/10. Not that those stories were particularly bad or anything, I just didn't have a strong interest in them. I just wasn't super into Hama's story, and I didn't really feel like it fit in with the rest of the book. As for Percy's, I just found it to be a little unnecessary, especially considering that it was just a history recap and it didn't really have anything to say about the future of the character. Back to the main story, though, I thought it was pretty good. It felt like a nice sendoff to this era of Wolverine. I especially liked that closing line, as it just really hit for me. Oh yeah, that double page splash was absolutely epic, as well.

While I don't think there's anything super disagreeable in Sabertooth War, I also didn't really connect with this story. Most of the arc felt a bit forced, from the unnecessary callback to X-Force #25 to the inclusion of the Bad Seed, Graydon Creed. I think the final fight was well drawn and laid out but it ultimately didn't feel like there was anything at stake. Maybe that's due to the way the story was sandwiched in around the more important finale for the Krakoa era. But I think I feel that way about the entirety of Percy's run. I mostly enjoyed it but ultimately I don't think it had as much to say as most of the other X books and I don't think it pushed passed a surface level exploration of the "outsider uncomfortable in paradise" c oncept. more
