Venom #4 is a far slower issue than the prior, but it sets up a new history and villain for the symbiotes. Its an engaging new story, and it redefines the symbiotes for the Marvel Universe. This comic definitely comes recommended. Give it a read. Read Full Review

Very gratifying single issue but felt like it had very minor short-term effects despite some very big long-term effects including a Symbiote origin retcon and at long last an origin for All-Black the Necrosword. The Venom series is moving in a weird direction. Some days I like it, while other days I feel it's doing too much. Sure, Cates is doing something different, and Stegman's art makes certain scenes look like something out of a hellish nightmare. However, messing with origin stories is a mixed bag. It paints the character in new light and sometimes it's not necessarily for the better. Hopefully, the conflict evolves into the horror story I want to see. Donny Cates lands another bullseye with issue number four, revealing the secret history of the symbiotes and their dark god, Knull. From beginning to end, Knull’s story has some absolutely jaw dropping moments, connecting to other pieces of lore throughout the Marvel Universe that you would have never thought possible. Other revelations include the origin to the symbiotes weaknesses, and other things that I dare not spoil in this review. Bottom line, Eddie Brock finds himself way out of his depth as he goes up against a foe stronger than he has ever faced, with poor Miles Morales dragged along for the ride. This issue was absolutely crazy in the best possible way, and should more than convince anyone who was on the fence about Cates’ Ve nom run to hop on now. more

I love origins and celestials. Combine them and you got one hell of a story and while it takes the whole issue to tell the origin, it is definitely worth it. Art knocked it out of the park.

Prelude: It's time for the fourth issue of Cates' run on Venom. After the Knull reveal last issue, let's see how Cates goes with explaining him. The Good: I do like Knull's backstory. The Symbiote weakness makes sense here. I love the ties to Thor and the change that was made. Stegman's art, like always, is great. Love the revelation of Klyntar. That's an interesting cliffhanger that's for sure. The Bad: I'm aware that this series of retcons will rub some readers the wrong way. Conclusion: While I understand that this issue may be polarising for some, I really enjoyed it. While it retcons quite a lot, it works for the story Cates is telling and at least makes sense to me.

Cates is doing exactly what he said he was going to do and he's succeeding at it. This book is like reading a well polished Death Metal album. I know, it's weird in a good way. The art team of Stegman, Mayer and Martin are beyond amazing. Stegman is doing his best work to date.

Knull delivers the origin of his symbiotes. It's Epic with a capital "E." It makes a glorious connection to Thor and slots the Beowulf scene from #1 firmly into place as fulfilled foreshadowing. Some very slight storytelling faults - the occasional clumsy word choice, visual details turning into background noise - are more than countered by the powerful, mythological force of expert world-building.

Yet another really great issue of Venom. This one has a great backstory for the villain, with a surprise tie in to Thor. Ryan Stegman's art is really good, and well complimented by the colors of Frank Martin. The script for the series main villain is even more proof Donny Cates is one of the best writers currently working at Marvel Comics. I don't have too much else to say, other than I really enjoyed this issue.
