Ultimate Spider-Man #19 is a visually stunning comic with solid character moments, but it struggles with its plot and a distinct lack of Spider-Man. If you are looking for gorgeous art and a deeper dive into Peter Parker's personal life, you might find some enjoyment. However, if you picked this up expecting a thrilling web slinging adventure, you will likely leave feeling underwhelmed and waiting for the real story to begin. To Jonathan Hickman, the man who is able to tell a Spider-Man story that didn't piss me off, a venom origin worth paying attention to and a whole universe worth following unlike 616. THANK YOU.

Plot Richard Parker lets the suit take over his body, and it launches a near-fatal attack on the Sinister Six, becoming something very similar to Venom. The Sinister Six are divided. Mr. Negative, Mole Man, and Black Cat begin to lose hope in Kingpin's leadership, while they don't know Kraven's whereabouts and distrust Mysterio. Mole Man meets Peter at his apartment and continues to offer him an alliance. Mole Man wants to get rid of the Kingpin and sees the porn in Spider-Man and Green Goblin. MJ gets upset with Richard for secretly wearing the suit for so long and asks Peter to tell her everything, especially the situation between Harry and Gwen. This series gets better and better, complicating things more and playing brillia ntly with the Spider-Man universe. Art It's loaded with brilliant details that explode in your face, supported by subtle, well-placed textures, giving a raw and powerful tone to this shocking story that gives Spider-Man a realistic twist. It's organic and dynamic, mesmerizing you in every panel. Summary MJ asks Peter for honesty, while the Sinister Six are divided and have Richard in their sights. more

Yes, finally. Mary Jane finally shows some sort of distress about what's been going on over the course of this book. Not just with Peter, but with Richard recently, as well. Super glad we finally got that from here, as I feel like it wouldn't have made much sense otherwise. I liked everything else quite a bit, also. Particularly Peter's interaction with Mole Man and Richard's suit basically...becoming Venom? It makes sense, particularly considering his encounter with 616's Miles Morales over in Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion, but it was still crazy to see.

This book is really hard to give thoughts about. There is so much stuff I like here. But I can't just blindly love it, because there is so much stuff that is still missing. And Peter's characterization continues to be weak compared to others. However, I still liked so much stuff. Art, the suit, MJ finally giving us what she feels. All good stuff, but with the series ending in 5 issues, I can't stop thinking how much wasted potential this series had. Because so many interesting character moments and developments are missed because every issue focuses in one month. Kingpin continues to be weak villain. What has he done past year that has really mattered? Only one who did anything was Kraven.

It's setting up for some kind of monumental moment. At least that's how it feels. It's not very action oriented, so if you like that I can see why this book might not be for everyone.
