    Comics: The Gathering - NumidianPrime

Overall I thought this was a fantastic start to an exciting new initiative. If the rest of the series is anything like this issue, it'll definitely be my favorite of the current Star Wars comics and it might end up ranking high on my favorites of all time. The month-long waits between issues has never felt longer because I can't wait to see where this series goes from here. Read Full Review

    But Why Tho? - Adrian

    Jan 06, 2021

Overall, Star Wars: The High Republic #1does exactly what one would come to expect in the first issue of a highly anticipated series. It provides a compelling cast of characters while providing excellent world-building without hammering the reader over the head with it. Read Full Review

This issue holds massive promise with defined, interesting characters and a large cast reminiscent of the Green Lantern Corps. Whatever the larger story of The High Republic becomes it is clear that there is a dedication to strong characters and a classic fantasy tone. This book is in good hands with Cavan Scott and the amazing artistic team. Here's hoping that the other entries to The High Republic live up to the promise of this fantastic initial entry. SciFiPulse - Ian Cullen

To sum up, this isn't a bad story. But it's not the best thing have read either. The character of Keeve feels like your stereotypical girl next door. Nothing really stands out about her other than her Jedi stuff. I can't really see her becoming as popular or as liked as an Ahsoka Tanu for example. But maybe I am being a bit unfair. I feel it was a bit of a mistake having her pass her Jedi Trails so fast. It may have been better to have introduced her at an earlier stage in her Jedi training. Much like how Ahsoka is introduced to us in the Clone Wars movie. Read Full Review

Comic Watch - John Edward Lee

The stage it set in not only this comic series, but the other interconnecting stories of The High Republic movement. Strangely, this particular issue givers a ton of setting and character introduction, but does not at all reveal the villains of the era yet. This kind of mystery is sure to baffle the Jedi of The High Republic as well as readers. That is, of course, until those villains reveal themselves at last. Read Full Review

It's always good to keep expectations in check and rightly so when launching a new era in a long-running and already sprawling property. Cavan Scott provides for a strong start to the story here with several hooks to work from with stories to tell and characters to explore. Set against the backdrop of settling more of the outer rim, hundreds of years before the end of the Republic as we know from the prequel trilogy, there's a lot to dig into and expand from there, especially if we get worlds that we know in the “present” that underwent radical transformation at some point because of colonization. There are some themes that I hope the writers are looking to explore in this area, but for now, we're getting a good introductory story to help expand and explore the setting. I like these characters already and am looking forward to more. Read Full Review

    Newsarama - Justin Partridge

It is a brand new age with brand new Jedi in Star Wars: The High Republic #1, but the potential for classic Star Wars action and fun is still very much alive here. Graced with a whole new age to explore, new casts, and new threats, Star Wars: The High Republic #1 feels like a more vibrant and exciting version of the "galaxy far, far away" than we are used to seeing. A very strong opening issue which has everything a Star Wars fan wants in action packed lightsabre battles, fun space adventures and an underlying evil waiting to pounce. Anyone can pick this comic up and hit the ground running with no prior knowledge required. Read Full Review

The High Republic is a fresh and exciting new era of Star Wars. With so much to explore, this first issue only gets to lightly touch on things. However, the action, characters, and curiosity are enough to keep me invested, and I'm eager to see more. Read Full Review

    Graphic Policy - Brett

Star Wars: High Republic #1 is an ok start hampered by it's almost too-innocent take. That's part of the point of it all and where this world is at this time but compared to what we've seen and our world now, it feels quaint. There's potential here and this is a series I'm going to stick with. But, the Pollyanna take, so far, feels rather off in this day and time. Read Full Review

Star Wars: The High Republic #1 costs a whopping $4. It absolutely is not worth the cover price at all. The list is nearly limitless of better ways to spend your entertainment dollars. I would only recommend Star Wars: The High Republic #1 to parents who might be looking for some safe and inoffensive reading for their daughters under the age of 12. Read Full Review
