Planet of the Apes vs. Fantastic Four is a crossover that I never knew I needed, but now feel like my life wouldn't be complete without. Josh Trujillo and Andrea Di Vito transport us into the world of the Marvel's First Family crossing paths with talking apes in an epic series I will eagerly be awaiting each month. Planet of The Apes Versus Fantastic Four #1 is a brisk, enjoyable retro-style romp for fans of unusual comic book crossovers. The series streamlines the set up and gets to the heart of the conflict (and the wild plot twists) within the first issue. The pacing, dialogue, characterizations and artwork are all outstanding. Planet of the Apes vs. Fantastic Four #1 delivers a first issue that kept me guessing. The Fantastic Four are helpless as the apes gain their powers. Di Vito and Arciniega honor each franchise's unique look, while Josh Trujillo captures every character's voice. These franchises may be sixty years old, but seeing an ape covered in flames makes them feel brand new. Read Full Review

Planet of the Apes vs. Fantastic Four #1 ultimately proves why this crossover exists, even if it makes you wait for the payoff. Josh Trujillo lays careful groundwork, sometimes to a fault, but once the book reveals its central twist, the series' potential snaps into focus. Paired with confident, expressive artwork from Andrea Di Vito, the debut issue sets up a concept strong enough to justify the slow burnassuming future chapters get to the point a bit faster. Fantastic Four has been firing on all cylinders for the last few years, so this book has some really big shows to fill. Anyone who steps up to write the team is going to have to work overtime to make it all work, and luckily, writer Josh Trujillo is up to the challenge. He's written the team several times in the past, and he gets the characters, which is very important. The Fantastic Four is a family, and Trujillo knows how to put each of them in their place. The issue starts in media res and then fills us in on why the group is on trial with the apes when we open up the book. Johnny Storm steps up to plead their case, and the way the team reacts is perfect, setting the tone for the rest of the issue. Read Full Review

If you have room in your stack for a competently made, brand safe crossover that spends its first issue setting up a better second issue, Planet of the Apes versus Fantastic Four #1 is a fine curiosity pick but not an urgent buy. The clear storytelling and solid art give you your money's worth on craftsmanship, yet the script's reluctance to truly exploit its wild premise keeps it planted firmly in "wait for the next chapter territory. In a crowded week, this is more "grab it if you are a die hard FF or Apes completionist than "drop everything and take it to the counter. Read Full Review
