Incredible Hulk #19

After we wrap up this chapter of The Incredible Hulk, we get 3 more short stories from other Hulks to celebrate 800 issues! It seems as they have slight connections to this current run, but mostly stand alone. Each has a unique creative team and seem to act as previews for future titles. The Incredible Hulk #19 concludes the latest story arc and celebrates the 800th legacy issue of the Incredible Hulk. The story concludes Hulks confrontation with Eldest as Charlie gains a new monstrous power while we get epic Hulk action thanks to Nic Kleins art. Some moments werent so great while others hit much harder. The backups, like any anthology collection, are hit and miss, with the third story with Red Hulk potentially being the best if not the most interesting for a potential future Hulk story. Incredible story, every page is interesting both visually and story-wise. The backup stories were mostly good too, I probably enjoyed She-Hulk's the most, short and mysterious.

This goes without saying, but the art from Klein is a 10/10. The story has been dragging for a while now, but this issue brought things back to the high point the series started at. The reason for this is the focus on Charlie and her relationship with the Hulk—specifically her idealized perception of the Hulk. The Greg Pak story is good, not as wild about the She-Hulk story, and I forgot about the Red Hulk story until this very moment. As usual, these anniversary issues typically feel like a waste of money.

So the opening torture scene of Banner was very... unique. Disgusting but amazing art. The splash page is also quite epic. Not a lot of splash art makes you change how you hold the book, but something felt so cool looking at it like a poster and Hulk declaring himself the strongest. The other stories were ok. Pak's tied into the main story... sort of. She-Hulk was just all filler. Red Hulk was fun. And by fun I mean brutal violence and a good voice of Red Hulk. This issue has one big issue though. The price point. It was not worth 7.99 at all. Maybe the standard 3.99 sure, but not twice the price. Those stories were not worth it. So with the price included my score would be 6/10.

I've never been privy to anthology stories; unfortunately, this one doesn't do it for me. It would have been nicer if we got an oversized chapter of PKJ's story, rather than the other smaller stories we did end up getting.

I have to drop this. Nic Klein's phenomenal art is wasted on this. Nothing worthwhile happens. 19 issues in and there has been no plot development, or anything really. There is nothing worthwhile in this book besides the art. But this book tries too hard to be Immortal Hulk without understanding what made it so good. 19 issues of Hulk and Banner being at odds. And nothing has happened. There has been no character development either for the main character. Charlie is fine, but Hulk is in literal stasis and every month it's just another issue of Banner being scared, Hulk being angry and no development of this massive book. This tries way too hard to make Eldest threatening, but it's kinda laughable how little of substance Eldest or anythin g has. Backups were okay I guess. more
