Ultimately, Fantastic Four: First Steps is a solid standalone issue that will get both long-time fans and newcomers excited to see America's First Family on the big screen. Fantastic Four: First Steps #1 is a bright and colourful comic that is not meant to be taken too seriously. It isn't really an essential purchase for fans of the characters, but those who buy a copy will probably have fun with it. Plot This comic tells of the attack by Mole Man, this underground villain who lives with his Moloids and begins to sink the skyscrapers of New York. Reed, Sue, Ben, and Johnny have just acquired their powers and are in a self-inflicted quarantine, which Reed has imposed to give them time to understand these changes. However, they suspend their quarantine and go face this villain, who unleashes a terrible monster to destroy the city. This comic is the MCU's reimagining of the first Fantastic Four issue. It includes a series of fictional articles about each of the characters taken from various magazines and newsreels from the 1960s. The comic's design is beautiful and vintage. Although the Fantastic Four manage to defeat Mole Man us ing their powers as a team for the first time, Sue diplomatically manages to have Mole Man and his civilization accepted by the United Nations. This comic is an interesting introduction to the origin of this team, setting the stage for the upcoming film. Art It has many textures and lines that give it a sense of dynamism but diminish the amount of detail. Only Ben and Reed resemble the actors in the film; Sue and Johnny, not so much. Pretty mid comic. I don't really like MCU version of Mole Man... The story wasn't really interesting. Also someone forgot to tell Fraction that "It's Clobbering Time" phrase is a conflict in the film and Ben explicitly told he never said this and it was from a cartoon. However, this comic seems to be written "from the words of the team members". So yeah, kinda dumb... Anyway, the movie really needed some prequel and maybe even more than one. But this one wasn't great.

It should have been exciting, we’re dealing with a prequel to Marvel’s next big movie, after all. Everyone should’ve poured their heart into it. But instead, it feels like a comic written by committee. From the art to the story, everything is dull and lifeless. The kind of comic that actually makes you less interested in the movie. And that’s a real shame.

An incredibly dull and lifeless retelling of the FF’s first adventure. It actually feels like Buckingham had no fun at all drawing it and only did it for the money. I might be wrong, but that’s how it appears to me. The fake 60s ads and articles are great, but they don't justify buying this otherwise soulless and calculated merchandise product.
