Tallying up Fantastic Four #5: These first five issues have been about getting Marvels founding heroes back on their feet after three years on hiatus. We now have the team back together and in a new headquarters, the Future Foundation gone, the Thing and Alicia married, and Dr. Doom and Galactus back in play. I for one look forward to Reed and Doom having a chance to catch up with each other in the wake of the last Secret Wars. Spider-Man may not have been able to give his wedding speech but I can confidently call the nuptials of Ben and Alicia, and Fantastic Four #5, a rousing success. Packed to the rafters with charm, heart, and superhero comedy, not to mention some tremendously fun artwork, the Dan Slott era arguably has its best issue to date with #5. As I said, the comic plays it safe in some ways but the heart is here and it's hard to not enjoy the complete package. The issue is a throwback in some ways delivering a special issue without angst, without negativity, it's a celebration. I really enjoyed this issue. We get three stories and they're all very heartfelt and emotional. But the one that definitely hits that note most is the first story about the courtship of Ben and Alicia. It's probably not a coincidence that this story also features the best art. It tells the reader why the relationship is so important to these characters and why they should care in an extremely effective way. The second story is about Ben's Bachelor Party and it's really fun. I would've wondered why it wasn't in the Wedding Special instead if not for the ending, once again very heartfelt. It reminds me of the better issues of Zdarsky's Marvel Two-In-One. Also, We get a short glimpse at Alicia's bachelorette party, and it's just one quick joke that's somehow not as gross as anything Gail Simone wrote in the Wedding Special, but it very well should be. Something about it works and you're not made uncomfortable with it unlike the Gail Simone story. The final story unfortunately probably has the weakest art. But we get to see Alicia and Ben finally get married and it's really well done. Down to Reed redeeming himself after blowing off all his responsibilities throughout the issue. And on top of that, we get a really cool tease for the next story that I'm really excited for. This would've probably been a 10 if not for some unfortunate art. I was really impressed with this. more

The new run of the Fantastic Four continues to be enjoyable. The wedding was a long time coming and a good payoff for long time fans.

Dan Slott hits all the stops here. I was misty eyed in one page and laughing out loud the next. Hughes and Allred were outstanding and fit their parts the best. Kuder delivered good pages but next to them anybody else will suffer. Kuder is great for this series and i would love to see what he does next. Excelsior!!!

Sue has a heartwarming flashback while helping Ben practice his dancing, Johnny throws a hilariously terrible bachelor party, and Reed acts a dick throughout, hoping that one grandiose gesture at the ceremony will make him look lovable. So, that's pretty good work on Ben's teammates. There's some cute stuff in the bachelor party and the ceremony itself. And it's all blown straight out of the water by the jewel that is Sue's flashback. The creators aimed to make at least one part of this wedding truly, timelessly great, and I say they succeeded brilliantly.

"Shenanigans" Wait... A comic book wedding where both parties actually go through with it? I'm baffled, speechless and genuinely happy how fun and sweet this issue was. Ben truly is a gentle soul and that's a pretty cool family to be marrying into. Excelsior!

I really hated the art in the framing story. Some of the stories were better than others, and I’m sorry but I guess I just don’t like these characters very much, sorry!
