Eternals #12

Eternals #12 is one of those books that is almost too good for words. Gillen is such a fantastic writer, able to find a way to make a standard length story feel long and satisfying, delivering everything readers want from a narrative. Ribics art goes both ways in quality, but its greatness far outweighs the few deficiencies, with Wilsons colors taking the cake. This is a crucial issue, and the entire creative team nailed it. It's really spectacular to witness a good writer and impeccable artist bring a fire comic with Thanos and his unfuckwittable one liners at the center of the story to life. Eternals #12 concludes the “Hail, Thanos” storyline, which ends with a weird thud. The comic quickly wraps up the fights between the Avengers and Eternals so it can finish the main story while laying the groundwork for the Judgement Day event. If you take it as more of a lead in to AXE and less of a finale, it's pretty solid. Maybe one of the better issues in the series.

Well, I guess I should have expected a shaggy dog anti-climax after the last issue bent toward farce. I'm not really disappointed in the way this played out, because I'm confident this is exactly what the creators intended. I'm cool with a disappointing ending if it's disappointing by design. So this is a good comic in my eyes, but not a great one. On the visual front, it's certainly gorgeous, but it also seems clear that the artist was in a rush. The level of polish and texture varies from panel to panel, hinting that even more beautiful results could have been achieved with more time.

Eternals is a hard group of characters to get into, but I really do like this series. This is the definitive Eternals series, and its definitely better than the MCU Eternals film. I would reccomend people read this series.

Always well written, though I can't help but say that I was expecting something a little more bombastic for the finale of the series. Solicits and the FCBD special without a doubt had a lot of it spelled out for us, which I feel definitely worked to the detriment of this issue especially. In the end, I'm curious how everything will fit together upon re-read but I am still very excited for Judgement Day.

I was expecting more action, but nothing in this arc matched the fight scene in #2. I also wasn’t wowed by the final resolution, either. Worth a read, but doesn’t blow my mind. Still, this got me hyped for more Eternals stories, and I didn’t care about them a few weeks ago.
