Just when you get comfortable and settled back into a familiar Carol world, the whole thing becomes upended. The appearance of a wanna-be big bad completely changes the setting. However, it ends with a closing remark from aforementioned love interest that will have you nodding your head in agreement, and I'm sure is a clipped image already making massive traffic rounds on Tumblr. However, despite the novel concept, the pacing throughout the issue is disjointed. Most pages are dialogue free, as we follow Venom the Dog through subterranean San Francisco. Then the narrative and visuals changes direction five pages away from the ending. The best way to describe the abruptness of this issue is to introduce John Carpenter to the end of the horror film Audition. The issue feels like a quick read, and then -BAM!- out of nowhere, there are parasitic worms, Carnage, and a soliloquy on Carnage's new philosophical life view. Read Full Review

Captain Marvel #1 accomplishes its goal of providing a fresh jumping on point for new and long-time readers. Kelly Thompson identifies what makes Carol Danvers great by highlighting her history and exploring some of her most important relationships. While the generic villain Captain Marvel fights was disappointing the shift in setting provides an interesting hook for the rest of this story arc. If you are someone looking to get into who Carol Danvers is before the movie comes out I recommend giving Captain Marvel #1 a try. Read Full Review

The creative team behind CAPTAIN MARVEL #1 offers strong ink and color work throughout the issue. Storywise, the first half works well, but the second half starts to unravel into multiple story strands that feel unresolved and meandering by the book's end. It's a first issue, and this creative team has potential. I'm willing to give Kelly Thompson a few issues before I nope out of this. Aah, who am I kidding. Carol Danvers is absolutely my favorite Marvel character and I'm not going anywhere. Most of you have already written off Captain Marvel as unsalvageable and that's okay. Marvel has given you buckets of reasons to do that. As for me, I remain hopeful that the new creative team will gel into something at least as special as what's currently going on in Mr. & Mrs. X. I was eager to discover this new ongoing. I have some issue with Carol since she screw Julia Carpenter in Civil wars. But thanks to Andrade I return on the caracter. Since then many reboot was tryed. I wasn't totaly convinced by Life of Captain Marvel but ready for a new start, and then I see the sketch for the uchronic timeline. That put me down right away. So I fear a lot this issue and what I will read. But like for Mr & Mrs X or West Coast Avengers, Thompson did great. I really like that she seem to respect Slott work or Rhodey. I love the Tank boy thing ^^ I also like she take care of Hazmat (Hoping this will not turn as for Aranä) I finish with a smile & she succeed to make me wanting to read the next issue. Way to go. Cover - A little related. And kind of nice. 1.5/2 Writing - Thompson is definitly a writer to recoon with in marvel right now. 3/3 Arts - Love the art. Their is something of Coipel in the drawing. The layout are really good. Nice catch marvel. I hope he will stay on this title. 3/3 Feeling - Well I'm hook. So this's a success ! 2/2 more

Captain Marvel returns to New York, smashing a kraken and getting attacked by the misogynistic Mahkizmo, the Nuclear Man. Filigreed around the edges of the outstanding cape action are some equally-outstanding soap-opera scenes. Carol reconnects with Jess and Rhodey, snarks with Tony, and picks up a promising would-be sidekick in Hazmat. It's a snappy, funny, sweet script that succeeds wildly at making these characters endearing. Combine the words with some polished, top-shelf art and you've got a corker of a #1. I'm not sure I've ever seen such a potent dose of character triage applied to a protagonist who needed it so desperately.

Kelly Thompson is the clear correct choice to give Captain Marvel her fresh start. The book has the right tone and really sets up the character in context. I know that the mission is to Make Carol Danvers more earthbound but I do help there is a balance made with her space adventures. Kelly Thompson writes a true jumping on point and Carman Nunez Carnero really supports with quality art. Kelly starts are off with a sense of time. I'm a little confused on continuity. Captain Marvel clearly joined the Avengers in Jason Aaron's book but in her solo title, it seems like the ask happened before the dark celestial storyline. It is a little confusing for readers of both books but it likely easier for those jumping on. All in all I loved it and plan to pull the monthly book for the first arc and then see if it is worth keeping in a regular pull list. Pick it up more

In the first arc of Avengers, the dark celestial arc, Carol has short hair. She grew out her hair in the Life of Captain Marvel miniseries, which this series picks up from. The second arc of Avengers, World Tour, has her with long hair. So we can assume that the continuity is Dark Celestials -> Life of Captain Marvel -> This series' first arc -> World Tour. The reason for the ask in this issue is because she took a sabbatical during Life of Captain Marvel, which took place over months.

For a number one Issue it did a great job! Gave us some background knowledge on the character as well as setting up great stuff for the future! Right from the start you can feel the history between Jessica and Carol. The dialogue and art were well done. This one issue you can feel her dislike of Tony. For an issue with a lot of dialogue, it wasn’t a pain!

Well, I think this is the first Captain Marvel book I've enjoyed a lot since... Secret Wars. Which is when I really started given the character more focus, so past me was smart to jump into the slog that would become her many relaunched solo series after that. There's been issues here and there that had given me false hope, and I hope that this won't continue that trend. Funnily enough, I found out Kelly Thompson actually helped write the first and last series of Carol's that I enjoyed, Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps, at the end of this issue. So I'm a little less worried. As for the issue itself, I think I can say that Kelly Thompson's greatest strength as a writer is characters and dialogue. And that works out great for this issue, wh ich is all about the characters in Carol's life. Spider-Woman and Carol have a great dynamic, which has been underutilized since Carol became a space character. Tony and Carol also have a very good dynamic. They have a pretty long history (With some very nasty things in there like Civil War II) and we see that represented as they constantly rib each other. We even get some time dedicated to that extremely under-cooked, lukewarm romance she had with Rhodey. And some new life is breathed into it, too. The solicitation for this issue worried me because it felt really focused on Carol as a strong female character, a feminist icon and essentially Marvel's Wonder Woman. That's certainly what they want to accomplish with the film, I guess, but the character has never really been that despite numerous attempts by the comics to make her that. It's sort of a looming threat over every run that you're going to be bombarded by that message and you better like it. And I won't lie, it is here if you're looking for it. The difference is Kelly Thompson is a great writer that does her best to blend it in and, maybe if this run is successful, actually make the character like that instead of what she's been for the last 4 years or so, at least. And also, I'm so worried that I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's Quentin Quire at the end there? If it is, I'm super excited for issue two. This issue was very good. It's certainly as good as it can be with how damaged this character has become. more

Kelly Thompson is a great choice for this book. I wasn't too keen on reading another Captain Marvel book, but picked it up just because of the writer. And it's a very good introduction to the new series, loved it. Cannot wait to read more and I really hope it continues to be as strong.

I guess Captain Marvel just isn't my thing. I can see why a lot of people will enjoy this and I appreciated how the book was being meta about her "image". Carol Danvers is much more likable in this than she has been in the last 3 years or so. Other than that, I found myself bored with the plot. Carmen Carnaro's art is passable but nothing fantastic. The plot could pick up but as of this issue, I'm still not sold on Carol.

THE GOOD: -I did like Spider-Woman's appearance a lot. -The art was decent. Nothing spectacular though. -I enjoyed Tony's appearance as well. He was very funny. THE BAD: -So we're doing that All-Star Superman style origin again?! This was slightly different, so I appreciate that, but it still felt like a variation on the same thing. -Wasn't a fan of Carol. I've never really liked her a whole lot though. -This was a very skippable issue for me. I don't feel like it added anything to my love for comics. -Hazmat was a very "meh" character for me. Couldn't care less about her. -So we have to do that whole interrupting-a-near-kiss cliche? Good to know. -I also thought Nuclear Man was a very boring villain. -And that ending really didn't jive with me. I'm gonna pass on this series. more

Yep. Wasn’t a fan of this issue. I had high hopes considering I like Kelly Thompson and I was hoping she could revive this series. It’s great that for many people she can, and I’m happy those people enjoyed this debut, but for me personally, I wasn’t on board.

This is what a woke of a art looks like. Making her a cringe karen personality, giving her a black boyfriend don't have anything to do but only just there for the sake of black representation and interracial relationships. Really sick and their of this nonsense, when it comes to white guys they make Carol Danvers ultimate feminist and independent girl power but when it comes to black guys they make her super sumbmissive house wife for some reason. Judging by the writer being female it is just understandable i guess.

Wow subtlety is definitely not this book's strong suit. The villain is a literal misogynist. There are also so many cameos, it is almost like Kelly Thompson is afraid Captain Marvel isn't interesting enough on her own.
