My guess is that this will end up being a prequel to the 2026 summer event written by zdarsky. I hear what you are saying about Colton, but the great villains have tragic backstories. Doom. Magneto. So many others.

Comic Book Clique - Jacob Kent
Nov 25, 2025Ultimately, this arc manages to juggle superhero action, heart pounding espionage, and real world trauma in a way that’s exciting, tragic, poignant, and at the end of the day, gives you hope that while our institutions may fail us, that the ideals they’re founded upon are very much worth fighting for. I can’t recommend it enough. Read Full Review

Plot Dave Colton is out of control, brutally murdering all the soldiers of Latveria. Steve intercepts him. Colton's super-soldier serum is flawed, and his heart begins to fail, but he reveals to Steve that the U.S. government helped Doom become the tyrant of Latveria. Steve Rogers disappears and travels across the U.S. to understand the new social and economic realities. General Ross considers him a deserter, and the two have an argument, which is interrupted by Iron Man, who recruits Steve for his new team. Colton is saved by a heart transplant developed by Stark. Captain America now lives at Avengers Mansion. This comic offers a brilliant and realistic vision of Captain America, refreshing his mythology by placing him in a conte more

Definitely my favorite issue of the run so far. This book has been a pleasant surprise for me. I disliked Zdarkys Batman and was going to skip this, and I'm glad I didn't. Also. Important to say that I appreciated how it was a 5 issue initial arc and not 12.

The conclusion to Our Secret Wars is bittersweet for me. Obviously the second Captain, Dave Colton, had to go. But it's disappointing that Zdarsky is seemingly going to turn him into a villain, to return in a future story arc. I enjoyed Colton's ambivalent story and found him much more relatable than the one-dimensional and squeaky-clean Steve Rogers. A part of me wanted to see him as a replacement for Rogers. I will probably pick up next issue, but with Colton gone for the moment (it seems) I doubt that the next arc will keep my interest.
