Boomerang has been an asset to this book, but somehow this Spidey/Boomer story doesn't feel as if its playing with its strengths as much as Spencer's previous Boomerang-centric issues. The issue itself is mostly recaps and montages to explain the full extent of the Kingp–I mean Mayor Fisk's involvement with the book. Despite Spencer’s insistence on recapping what we all know in valuable page space, Amazing Spider-Man #41 is a strong addition to his run. By leaning into the cringe-inducing yet lovable nature of Spidey and Boomerang’s relationship, he gives us a story that is brisk and comical while still being genuinely intriguing. The best way to describe Nick Spencer's run on Amazing Spider-Man is "a return to normalcy." He is telling the types of stories that people think of when they think of a classic Spidey jaunt. This issue is really, really funny. The reveal is unexpected, but it makes sense. I wonder how this lines up with Zdarsky's Daredevil. I also wonder what the long term is with this story arc. We've got so much going on already. I'm also curious to see how the Lethal Legion subplot will play out, and how it pertains to ALL the Chameleon related stuff. I know from solicitations that this and the previous "Sins of..." back up is teasing what's coming next in the Sins Rising arc. Nick Spencer is piling more and more on, and if it pays off, it'll be great. But if it's fumbled, that'll be too bad.

Is it just me or does Boomerang work better as an ally than he did as an enemy? Better not get used to it. I got used to Sandman as a good guy for nearly a decade and look how that turned out. Still, this was a good issue. I usually enjoy stories involving that menacing tablet. It also features the Kingpin as we love to hate him-at his meanest. I've been into and out of the Spidey books a lot over the last 20 years. They're good, then they do something I don't like and I leave. They show promise again, they do something to blow it. But I have to say I've been enjoying them more the last few years than I have in a very long time. And this issue is a fine example of why.

No matter how much flashing back he does -- and he can do a *lot* -- Nick Spencer's Spidey just never digs his way out of the backlog of plot development the author dumps on him.
