First off the art in this book was simply amazing - easily one of the best drawn books I’ve seen this year. The story was tight and well written … if not a little too familiar. I enjoyed every page of this comic. I was honestly ready to jump right into issue 2. The coloring is a little muddled in some spots … but all in all a near perfect comic reading experience. Books like this validate comics as a unique and beautiful form of entertainment. Highly recommend!

Skinbreaker is flawless comic artistry. David Finch has found the perfect playground for his intricate style in the lush landscapes and ethnic embroidery of this world, and Annalisa Leoni's strange but beautiful coloring brings it all to life. Rus Wooton's simple but elegant lettering provides some much needed clarity and calmth to the detail-obsessed pages. The story of Skinbreaker #1 is simple but engaging. The three main characters, despite looking very similar at first glance, are easily distinguishable by character, body type and other details, which is quite a feat. I also enjoyed the subtle world building around the eponymous weapon and the nature of the... orks? There are more similarities to Jim Henson's Dark Crystal than just the color of the crystal sword, and I love it. Skinbreaker #1 was a great first chapter of what will surely be one of the best comics of 2025/26. more

The story itself isn't all that original and the dialogue at times is a little stiff but mostly acceptable. Where this book seriously shines is in the sumptuous art and stunning colour panels. Totally breathtaking by David Fich and worth the cover price alone......JM

Waited a while to grab this. Was gonna pass but the high praise for the art got me to give it a go. I was not disappointed. The art is astonishing, but thats hardly surprising. That said the detail and color work and composition and storytelling are all at peak levels here. Finch puts his decades of expertise on full display and it is a marvel to witness. But the story here doesn't slack either. Its a very straightforward narrative but the character work is clear and direct; and what worldbuilding is there is done well. I think I'll be picking up the whole series.

A fairly strong start for this book. I haven't read a whole lot of Kirkman's work, so I wasn't sure what to expect with this. Luckily, there was a lot to like here. Of course, Finch does a fantastic job on the artwork. So much detail without being too overbearing. Back to Kirkman, though, the story here is relatively simple, yet well-executed. Solid world-building, as well. Looking forward to more.
