But Why Tho? - William Tucker

    Nov 28, 2023

Titans: Beast World #1 opens the new event with as huge a gambit as possible. The book features a cataclysmic battle that is a worthy climax, but it is merely a prelude. And yet, amid the traveling across a solar system and the extensive cast, Taylor finds the time to make the first issue a tribute and a celebration of Beast Boy. Read Full Review

Titans: Beast World #1 is an excellent start to the latest DC Universe big event. Tom Taylor and Ivan Reis nail what the scale of a DCU event needs to be. The story is framed around the Titans, specifically Starfire and Beast Boy, helps to further elevate the team as the premiere superhero team. It's a fantastic event concept, a fun first issue, and I love the current DC event format that uses the main series and maybe one tie-in for the main story and uses the tie-ins to expand the world of the DCU and maybe set up new series. Read Full Review

    Weird Science - Gabe Hernandez

Titans: Beast World #1 is a weirdly mixed bag of a comic. Tom Taylor's energy, drama, action, and pacing are on point for once, but the story is riddled with plot holes and contrivances. Still, it's a fun read as long as you turn your brain off first, and Ivan Reis's art is stupendous. Read Full Review

While the first issue of the event was big, it manages to set up aftermath which I believe will have the heroes cleaning up for months. Taylor seemed to quickly lose track of everything the his Titans series has been setting up and will have to spend the next issues of the event trying to regain, or shift the focus on again. It's hard to believe this is the first Teen Titans-led event in DC Comics' history, but their lucky to have their first one in the hands of Tom Taylor, one of the best storytellers amongst DC's active writer roster. Taylor has been building to this event throughout his run on the main TItans series and delivers a banger start to this highly-anticipated event which has been teased as having a lasting impact on the wider DC Comicverse, unlike the publisher's painstakingly bad Knight Terrors event earlier this year. Taylor masterfully weaves together elements of humor, action, adventure, and emotional depth, creating a captivating narrative that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Nice to finally have some big stakes for the Titans to face now that they're the top team in the DCU. There were still some jarring dialogue issues that felt off based like the whole scene with Batman that were unnatural but didn't ruin the issue.

Good, not great, start that at least has a kickoff that puts the other 2023 DC events to shame. It does have several plot holes and many unanswered questions as others have pointed out already. The Ivan Reid art is absolutely gorgeous, as we've come to expect. I just hope this event hasn't yet peaked already.

I thought this was definitely an interesting start to the first DC crossover event led by the Titans. I liked Reis's art and I thought it fit the story. Speaking of which, while I did enjoy Taylor's story for the most part, I did think that it moved a bit too fast. I know there's a lot to establish for the story going forward, but it kind of felt like a lot was crammed in this issue in order to get things going. Hopefully the next issue can slow things down a bit now that we have the foundation for this storyline.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I was not a fan of this story. As far as the past powers of Beast Boy, he resembles the animals he forms, he doesn't become them and since when is Starro an animal? They he controls of host of his own body parts. This whole thing lost me. It stretched things too far. I'm not sure Amazons can go into space. Donna would still freeze to death. I won't be continuing this. Another event that's a waste of time. Just stop with the events already. My Comic Review Channel - https://youtu.be/lEl3kh6mMoA
