Supergirl #36

I've enjoyed the writing on the Supergirl comic. The dialogue has been engaging, and her search for the destroyers of Krypton was enjoyable. She's really good in outer space, seems like. She might want to go back there more. Read Full Review

This issue of Supergirl wasnt exactly nothing, but it relied on the actions of other books to push it along. Im glad that shes been given something to do, even if that is being evil. It had quite a few great moments and the art team was fantastic throughout, but its difficult to say that this was really Supergirls story when it seemed like she was a bit player in the much larger narrative. It will be interesting to see what she does while Infected, especially since the next issue indicates a fight between her and the Worlds Finest. Read Full Review

So Supergirl #36 is mostly setting up Kara's arrival at the fortress, then repeating the events from Batman/Superman, and then showing us some immediate aftermath. Based on that, there's only so much he can do with the story but it's overall effective at filling in the blanks. Read Full Review

This comic really isn't bad by any means, and in some ways it's even better than the core Infected issues or some of the tie-ins that I've written about up until now. However, it still doesn't add a whole lot to the main narrative in Batman/Superman as it mostly repeats what happened in that title, and there is a small inconsistency with how the same event is depicted. The creative team is very good. And I understand that crossovers are a part of this business. But Kara always seems like second fiddle whenever a crossover happens. Supergirl has been thrown around quite a lot by crossover events this Year. This Year of the Villain thing hits her particularly hard, so its easy to see why she would do what she does at the issues end. Other than that one dark final moment, this issue is an awkward, silly narrative shuffle.  Read Full Review

With such a strong tie to the Year of the Villain crossover event, this issue will only appeal to those invested in the DC Universe. So here we are, in the repeat part of the wash-rinse-repeat cycle of evil Supergirl over the last decade. Maybe, just maybe, new writer Jody Houser will be able to write an ongoing book about a heroic Supergirl. As for Andreyko, I don't think his run will stand the test of time. Supergirl is once again dragged into another crossover event instead of establishing it's own identity. I am struggling to find reasons why anyone would keep putting their time and money into this series. At this point, it has become a companion series to whatever is happening in the universe. Once again Supergirl is a retelling of another book. Good for those only reading Supergirl, but for everyone else... you are wasting our time. Especially since although the art here is good, Batman/Superman's art is practically flawless.

I feel bad for Marc Andreyko. It seems he's at the mercy of every single event. And it does put a damper on things. But this issue wasn't too bad, it was just brief and really takes the wind out of my sails as I realize just how pointless this entire Year of the Villain arc was.

One thing I hate about big crossover events, is how they affect ongoing stories, how they temporarily derail plotlines that now how to be either paused and delayed til the event's resolution, or sshoehorned to fit whatever's happening now in the event. I stopped following Supergirl's comics a while ago, due to limited spare time and not as much interest as I once had for it, when Andreyko took over the series. Thus, as you can figure out, I didn't have a clue what's up with the first half of this issue. Yeah, cool, it explains The Secret ix concept to Supergirl's readers who may be unfamiliar with it, but it does not do the same job for those who follow Batman/Superman, and may be unfamiliar with Supergirl's current state of affairs. Gran ted, that's not too big of a problem, since you can figure out who, what and why on your own, or Google whatever you don't know, but a little, rief explanation would have been welcome. Either that, or I don't know, maybe the issue should have been completely dedicated to the crossover? And speaking of the crossover, I have bad news if you care about it, because there's not much plot here. We witness some events from Batman/Superman #4 unfolding from Kara's perspective, and the her being all villanous. Turns out Batman Who Laughs' infected batarang has power to give its victim a kinky haircut and corpse paint. Oh, and some weird pointy elf-like ears. And that's pretty much it. What we got isn't bad, but I expected more substance, after all that's what tie-ins are for, to insert more themes, plotlines and development that may not be essential for the main story, but surely helps to flesh it out. Instead, I've spent more time thinking what musicians does her corpse paint resemble the most (I'd say it's a mix of King Diamond and Dani Filth, but that's just me), than what actually happened in this comic, because practically nothing event-centric happened in it. And that's a huge problem. History is littered with comics that are really cool conceptually and character design wise, but with no story, actual content, to drive them, they end up being disposable trash everyone forgets after a week. Remember Old Lady Harley? Couldn't blame you if you didn't. more
