While we don't get to see much of the Freddy and Darla in their death sentence predicament, Johns does an outstanding job of spreading the love and touching on everyone else this issue. Our artists do an excellent job of making you feel like the entire world is crumbling around our heroes. Issue #6 definitely moves our plot along in so many ways and I'm excited to see how it all goes down next month. Read Full Review

That having been said, the elements introduced are a surprise with their timing, and it does certainly complicate things for our heroes. I hope Johns, and the rest of the creative team, can bring them together in a cohesive manner when it comes time to wrap everything up. While the focus is primarily on Billy, Mary makes a bold move in revealing their secret to their foster parents, Pedro and Eugene continue to struggle in the Gamelands, and the comic also briefly showcases a battle between Black Adam and Sivana, with the doctor wiping the floor with the wizard‘s first champion. VerdictEven though Shazam! has many of the trappings, of the classic Captain Marvel, it is best seen as its own thing. The differences are wide enough that it will likely turn off staunch traditionalists. However, if you can look at it as its own thing, a new interpretation for a new era, then it is a quite fun and enjoyable reading experience. Where a lot of the DC line has been veering away from the renewed optimism promised by Rebirth, Shazam! is doing a wonderful job of keeping that positive spirit alive. Read Full Review

As this chapter concludes, it is my hope that the Billy can get back to some regular super-heroing, allowing his super-powered sibling to hang in the background a little more. I don't dislike the new concept of the whole family as a franchise, but I feel it's the sort of thing to be explored judiciously, so that the original Captain Marvel/Shazam can develop front and center. Maybe it's the name change (if DC had a sense of humor they'd change his name to Captain Miracle), maybe it's just one reboot too many, maybe it's the silly nature of the different "lands" the Shazam Family are visiting (they owe more to nursery rhymes than to fantasy adventures), but I'm just not enjoying this storyline. A lot of stuff is going on, making the plot move forward quite slowly, but it is all connected, thus giving a feeling that the payout will be great.

I was told this is supposed to be a finale of some sort to 'The Seven Magic Lands Part 1' but it doesn't really feel like a conclusion to begin with. Plenty of things happened in here and a lot of it needs explaining like right now, regardless of it all this is still a solid issue. Sivana spars with Black Adam in the Rock of Eternity as Billy and Mary were pushed back to their foster home, I didn't quite get how it happened. Also I didn't know Black Adam could be so easily defeated by Sivana and Mr. Mind, it was a shocker and it seems like they have a bigger plan which is yet to be revealed. The scene where Billy meets his father for the very first time was carried out satisfactorily. I liked the story of Billy's birth told through his f ather, it was not bad not bad at all. How in the heck is Wizard Shazam even alive? He's like the least expected character to suddenly appear before Eugene and Pedro out of nowhere when they were in the middle of the game. King Kid prepares to bring all out kids vs. adults war on Earthlands (have to keep an eye out for it) as Mary reveals the long kept secret to her foster parents (just another shocker). more

THE GOOD: -I really enjoyed this issue. -I still just really appreciate Geoff Johns making this a series that everyone can enjoy. -Black Adam/Sivana have one of my favorite story lines from this issue. -This issue was really emotional too. -I like the art. Scott Kolins art feels a little out of place though. -I'm really interested in where the Gamelands story will go. THE BAD: -I wish they'd just drop King Kid. I don't like him at all. -The end felt kinda forced, unfortunately.
