I said last time that Hawkman is a great character with a book that usually suffers from early cancellation. I'd love for this to not be the case with this installment of Hawkman. The issue ends with Carter on his knees, forced there by Idamm, his old ally when he was the leader of the Deathbringers. As he looks defeated as he watches the city of London be put in ruin, of course we see the predictable rise of the hero. But Venditti does such a great job making you second guess what will truly happen. With all the craziness that has taken place thus far, how could he not throw in a curve ball right at the last second? Last few issues or not, Venditti has made me a Hawkman fan, quite possibly for life. Read Full Review

Hawkman has been building to this confrontation since the series launched and while it does feel abrupt that the Deathbringers are there already it's an easy piece to kind of kick off to the side. What we get is the big threat with promises of help from the Justice League and the Green Lantern Corps, or at least Xanadu assumes they'll show up, but it's likely to be all about Carter and connecting the pieces of his past together in the right way. There's a lot to like here as it moves a mile a minute but it feels natural and earned even if you do want to smack Carter around a bit for how he acts early on. It's a solid issue that looks great and sets us up for what's to come next perfectly. Read Full Review

Hawkman #9 was a fast read, but all the same got us to where we need to be when the Deathbringers make their presence know on Earth. Great set-up, execution, and finishing things off with a taste of what we have to anticipate when it is all or nothing against a force that is deadlier than what we were led to believe initially. We turn a page in the way this series has been playing out, in that we're actually doing something new and because of that the story feels exciting again.  The art in this issue is great and I can't wait to jump back into the next issue to see what our hero will do when confronted against his ultimate evil.  The biggest complaint here is that it goes by way too fast for what we get out of it, but that's not saying what we get isn't fun.   Read Full Review

...Was it just me or was this issue entirely recap, with the only progress being made being Idamm being alive and Hawkman surrendering to the Deathbringers? Yeah, that's annoying. This series has an awful plotting problem. Same as other Venditti series like Damage and the latter parts of Hal Jordan. I was mostly bored with this.

I’m kinda disappointed! I was getting all into it with the last few issues and then they just spent the whole issue reminding me about everything I learned already, and then suddenly the climax was happening out of nowhere!
