Detective Comics #980

The story is nearing its conclusion and knowing both the creative team and the antagonist there is likely to be fireworks before alls said and done. It will be very interesting to see how the end of this tale effects the relationships of what was once an unbreakable team and their ability to stay together. Here we are, Brother Eye taking over Gotham city and the Bat-family fighting in hopes to end the darkness that has taken over. Brother Tim and his OMAC's are ready to change and create a new future. I've always been afraid when Brother Eye shows up wanting to change or ready to kill everyone. This time coming as a "savior", Brother Eye mocks Batman for his shortcomings and is ready to help Tim Drake get rid of Batwoman for her crimes she has committed in the future. Usually I like to immerse myself in the story, but for some reason, the real enjoyment I got out of this particular issue was in trying to theorize on the potential meta commentary Tynion may have been incorporating into this piece. Although, as the story goes, I was happy to see it focus more on the characters than the fighting because I can't really drum up too much enthusiasm for unstoppable robot armies. On a single issue format, it is a skip but is a good average comic on stands. There has never been a bad issue but none that have blown everything off the stands, this is the perfect continuation of it and we can only hope the next issue culminates everything in a wonderful fashion and what comes next is also as good as looking at this run overall. I hate to see Tynion's run coming to a close. I have found his run on Detective to be the best Batman related book (by far) over the past several years. I fear what's coming ahead.

We are close to the end. Kate will fight Tim. Batman, Spoiler & Cassi try to stop Brother Eyes. Batwing & Azrael will turn out as Omac. Damn what a firework for a ending. The only thing I was very surprised is that Kate seem to know that Ulysse Armstrong as a part in all this mess. But I loved this ... And the Omac showing Steph & Cassi the Batgirl they where or could have been. I love it ! Cover - The variant very strong beautiful & in link. 2/2 Writing - I will miss Tynion IV. He really succeed to put all characters in our heart ! 3/3 Arts - Since the start Detective Comics have a huge artist. Each Panel is a pleasure ! 3/3 Feeling - It was the better Rebirth Title. I don't want to leave (it) ^^ 2/2

What makes this particular issue better than what preceded it, was the character development of Stephanie. All these nods to pre New-52 timeline of DC Comics really do wonders to her character, as well as shhow the relevance, weight of the Bat Symbol. It may not be a perfect issue in a perfect story arc, but I can't say I didn't enjoy reading it. Looking forward to see where it leads.

Welcome to the Oblivion Bar where the first round is on me and the pretzels are free! Be warned: like the pickled eggs at the bar, this issue is going to get SPOILED rotten. We open with Brother Eye-Tim-OMAC breaking into GCPD in order to make the cops OMACs. But Batwoman breaks into GCPD and draws Tim away from the cops, and Renee Montoya. Tim pursued Batwoman in an attempt to kill her but when he catches her he decides to show the future he saw from Ulysess in hopes to prove to her why she needs to die. Meanwhile, Spoiler, Orphan, and Batman break into the new Belfry hidden by tech Spoiler created. But it can only get them so far. Ulysess sees them and sends a controlled Azrael and Batwing to fight Batman while Ulysess tries to sid e track Spoiler from cracking Tim’s code and breaking him from Brother Eye. Ulysess shows Orphan and Spoiler a future where they were both Batgirls but it’s not enough to distract them. Spoiler manages to break the code and we end with Ulysess shocked that Spoiler broke the code. Overall, I was really not that impressed. Here are some questions I left with: how can Spoiler crack this code from Tim and Ulysess that is also from the future? How can Spoiler create drones that can hide them from this future Brother Eye tech but Batwing and Azrael get taken over? Were did these drones magically come from? I thought Batwing was just as smart especially with tech; did that change now? How did Ulysess get a tattoo on his head from one issue to another? I don’t remember that from before. And the most important of all, What’s going to happen after all of this? All of these OMAC’s have Bat symbols all over them. Does Tim or Batman have no repercussions from all of this? Do we just go back to normal and pretend like none of this happened? Because I’m getting kind of tired of that personally. more

I loved the “idea” of where this has been going. But I feel like we are just trying to “again” quickly wrap up another story and move on to another. This was a nice steady build that included some cool things from Infinite Crisis, as well as Tynion’s own run. We don’t need to rush through an ending and I feel like we’ll just magically wrap it all up next issue like they did with Future Tim. If you’re going to just rush through an ending and leave glaring questions, what’s the point?
