Batman: The Detective #5 is an incredibly rewarding read. The pacing for this series has been incredible, as the team has balanced character and action perfectly. Seeing Batman's past come back to haunt him always makes for great tales, but when mixed with a dark possible future and an outstanding blend of characters, old and new, what we get is a Batman story for the ages. BATMAN: THE DETECTIVE #5 pushes this series to its limits preparing for it to burst at the seams throughout its concluding installment. The rationale and motivation behind the revealed villain ultimately makes sense and emotionally fit the narrative well. However, one could argue it was a bit of a stretch. That said, Taylor wraps up loose ends and lays the story on the reader's lap, plain as day, ready for its concluding chapter without too many dangling questions. Read Full Review

This story really provides a likable villain in Equilibrium and just as I would like to see a Batman figure, I would like to see a figure of her in the future. She truly is a unique antagonist and it is difficult to use the term villain to describe her because even though she is willing to kill, she cannot be looked at a solely evil. Batman: The Detective #5 uncovers all the mysteries and plans of Equilibirum in the penultimate issue for the series. While the telling works well enough, the villain's lackluster identity and her rationale for becoming a mass murderer strains credibility. Batman: The Detective had a strong start. It wasn't the detective story many wanted, but I saw a tale in which we, the readers, were the detective. But Taylor"and his boy Henri Ducard"have been withholding information, and that doesn't feel fair when the audience is trying to take part in the case. And as if that's not enough, one big delay has taken the steam out of the Bat-truck, and we're looking at one more big delay before the finale drops in the second week of November. This was the best issue of the series so far! I wish the main batman line was this good! I'm not going to say I was completely surprised at the reveals but really, I don't need needless shock value, it's still a lot of fun. I'm like that this issue provided the main reveal which will let the final issue be a properly climax of the story. My only complaint, and its minor, is just how connected Batman seems to so many people around the world. It's a little to deus ex machina for me. I would love to see more batman solving mysteries with a handful of established allies and reasonable tech. The giant tank van thing that he had stored away, just waiting to be used was a bit much and the only reason I don't give this issue a full 10.

I feel like every other time I see Tom Taylor, he's taking on pieces of Grant Morrison's run. Not just the Batman Inc. members and gadgets, but how global Batman really is. I mean, the way Batman talks about what good he might've actually done, especially on individual levels is really solid here. It goes into the ripple effects and I have a feeling that's what's going to get Bruce to realize how much good he does do in the world. And how people like Equilibrium who are stuck int their toxic thoughts and helplessness at senseless tragedies really fit in that puzzle.

Not bad, but not really good either. As usual the story is growing stale. I should have known it would come down to Equilibrium just being another totally insane person willing to kill countless innocents out of a ridiculous excuse for revenge on someone totally innocent. The conclusion should have been released this month, but at least this series only missed one month's release. Not bad considering how Batman/Catwoman's missed 4 or 5. I do look forward to the conclusion, though in ways it's more so this story will wrap up than because of suspense. But it's usually the case with stories that last more than 3 or 4 months. I just get tired of them. I think one problem I have is all this Batman Inc. crap which I hated coming back. And it l ooks like it's making a comeback in the regular series too. It may be the reason for a Batman departure next year. Too soon to tell. I will give the Detective credit though as it's probably still one of the better stories of 2021. more

Oh look, the most predictable "plot twist" that we totally didn't see coming from the very first issue. How this guy manages to trick people into believing him an actual good writer is baffling to me. He's the best writer for people who really don't need to put any thought into it while reading comics.
