I felt the same as you at first. Maybe it's that this is in a separate direction from the other Batman books. None of Tynion's constant new characters and taking us further into the umpteenth "bold new direction." This is more Batman kicking bad guy ass than taking him places he's never went before. A concept I think we've all been a bit weary of since "City of Bane."

Apr 21, 2021This introduction to Batman: The Detective was really a nice opener. I love the plot and how it flows smoothly into different scenarios. I loved seeing Knight and Squire again, as well as seeing Bruce pay homage to BOTH his Fathers. This is a heady mix of emotion and perseverance that I look forward to seeing how it all plays out for the World's Greatest Detective. Of course, I want to know who is behind it all as well, but isn't that the fun part of a story? To watch everything add up? Read Full Review

Apr 13, 2021BATMAN is intelligent, hardworking, and expresses an unwavering moral compass. Hes fearless, courageous, and relies on his wit and aging physicality to overcome some of the darkest obstacles Gotham has to offer. However, with the death of Alfred, he's lost and searching for a purpose. Taylor makes this story new user-friendly while reintroducing some semi-obscure Bat characters in the process. Anyone can hop onboard without prior knowledge and learn something new in the process. Plus, older and more avid fans will love how real and natural BATMAN is portrayed. Taylor creatively drops readers deep into the story almost immediately and makes new fans feel welcome with some of the many clever twists within the narrative. Read Full Review

Apr 13, 2021Even if you're the type who thinks there are too many Batman books, I recommend giving Batman: The Detective a try. This is not only a very different Batman compared to the mainline books, but this first issue makes a strong case to justify the series' existence. Batman: The Detective is an engaging new adventure for Batman that never lets up and never lets us forget the weight on his shoulders. Read Full Review

Finding out why has me more hyped than Ive been for a Batman story in years. Read Full Review

Apr 13, 2021If you're looking for the Tom Taylor on Batman that we've been waiting for, then you're in for a surprise"but not a disappointment. Batman: The Detective takes the Bat out of Gotham, and it leaves the rogues behind, yet this clean slate is the perfect stage for Taylor and Kubert to bring the Dark Knight back to his essence. Here's hoping for much, much more of this in the years to come. Read Full Review

Apr 13, 2021Batman: The Detective #1 is a fun start to a self-contained Batman story. It takes him to unfamiliar territory and seems to mix his different aspects well. It's a nice break from the greater macro Batman story taking place currently in other series. There's some that's a bit classic about it, a comic you can just pick up and enjoy. Read Full Review

Apr 13, 2021Kubert uses detailed and exciting drawings to fill this issue. The color work of Anderson accentuates them beautifully, and the tone perfectly defines the world of Batman. Though I find the total work to be wonderfully done, there is a particular panel that I find glorious. This is an engaging issue that immerses you into the story. Read Full Review

Apr 13, 2021Like their interpretation of Bruce's state of being, it is a starting point rather than a fully fleshed-out and understood vision. The thematics are the most detailed factor, making for an issue ruminating on lives saved and the ghosts of those lost, and it remains to be seen if the creative team will be able to use the remaining five issues to connect these various pieces into a more cohesive whole.
