This introduction to Batman: The Detective was really a nice opener. I love the plot and how it flows smoothly into different scenarios. I loved seeing Knight and Squire again, as well as seeing Bruce pay homage to BOTH his Fathers. This is a heady mix of emotion and perseverance that I look forward to seeing how it all plays out for the World's Greatest Detective. BATMAN is intelligent, hardworking, and expresses an unwavering moral compass. Hes fearless, courageous, and relies on his wit and aging physicality to overcome some of the darkest obstacles Gotham has to offer. However, with the death of Alfred, he's lost and searching for a purpose. Taylor makes this story new user-friendly while reintroducing some semi-obscure Bat characters in the process. Anyone can hop onboard without prior knowledge and learn something new in the process. Plus, older and more avid fans will love how real and natural BATMAN is portrayed. Kubert uses detailed and exciting drawings to fill this issue. The color work of Anderson accentuates them beautifully, and the tone perfectly defines the world of Batman. Like their interpretation of Bruce's state of being, it is a starting point rather than a fully fleshed-out and understood vision. The thematics are the most detailed factor, making for an issue ruminating on lives saved and the ghosts of those lost, and it remains to be seen if the creative team will be able to use the remaining five issues to connect these various pieces into a more cohesive whole. This was absolutly briliant. This is the best Batman book since Curse of the White Knight. While I was Reading it “it would be cool if they made a Batman book like x(can’t say it’s spoilers)” and then this book does it! Also the new design for Batman with the trenchcoat is dope. The only flaw I can think of is that a character shows up in the story that thematically feels out of place. The story is for the most part very grounded but they then throw in this character and it feels out of place.

Kubert got every character looking bloated here, but the story is far from that. Batman's over here boxing ghosts, teaming up with characters that haven't been big since Batman Inc. & leaving the manor for the second time ina Bat-book in less than six months. Honestly, I wasn't looking forward to reading this. I can't really explain why beyond just a general Bat-fatigue. It's weird how in this story, Bruce is ready to leave Gotham behind but in every other title, he explicitly talks about how Gotham needs him. It also seems like they might be aging Batman a little bit? Which is actually kind of neat. I like that. And the final twist was actually kind of engaging to me. I was coming into this with the lowest expectations, so it's not hard to see why they were surpassed, but nonetheless, I really liked this one.

I felt the same as you at first. Maybe it's that this is in a separate direction from the other Batman books. None of Tynion's constant new characters and taking us further into the umpteenth "bold new direction." This is more Batman kicking bad guy ass than taking him places he's never went before. A concept I think we've all been a bit weary of since "City of Bane."

Taylor's writing doesn't always grab me but this was actually pretty damn engaging. I like the fact that Batman has something to actually solve though I doubt it will take that long for him to figure out. Writers tend to have issues creating lengthy mysteries without making it overly convoluted. As much as I love the Bat-family, not having them around allows him to just focus on solving crimes which I can only hope will be the focus for this series. Kubert's art is pretty hit or miss for me since Batman and Son but this was surprisingly solid here. I do feel a few panels were almost exact copies of ones he did for Morrison's run but since he's copying himself I guess he can get a pass as long as it doesn't persist. They are good looking pa nels. First issues are meant to grab you and this certainly has for me. I'm looking forward to this duo and the (hopefully) true detective aspect of Batman to shine. Batman: The Detective #1 - A Dark Knight in London Writer: Tom Taylor | Artist: Andy Kubert | Publisher: DC Comics KAEL NGU Variant Cover Review ✍ Since I relaunched “GTMedia Reviews” as “I Review Comics”, the Batman titles I’ve reviewed have been hit and miss. I’m currently reviewing the tail end of Tom King’s run, as well as Joker: Puzzle box and Suicide Squad: Get Joker. Of the Bat-books, I’ve reviewed non have stood out as anything other than mediocre which is sad because: A. Batman has always been one of my favorite Superheroes. B. DC is producing so many books featuring the Bat-Family of characters. Batman: The Detective by Tom Taylor and Andy Kubert is easily the best of the Bat titles I’ve review ed recently. The story appears to be set in the future. I haven’t read the solicits for the title or any other reviews. I am not exactly sure of the background surrounding the series. I’m not even entirely sure this is Bruce Wayne in the suit. This Batman may be Bruce Wayne, but since no one mentions him by name so I won’t assume. In any case, the character is jaded by events that the series isn’t clear about and focuses on taking Batman in a new direction away from the status quo (Gotham City, Wayne Manor, Etc.). The book follows Batman as he investigates a terrorist attack on a plane that leaves over 100 people dead and one of his allies, Beryl Hutchinson A.K.A. Knight critically injured. The opening action sequence is over the top and beautifully rendered by Kubert. It sets the tone of the series and also raises some interesting questions. Why are the bad guys wearing Batman cowls? In addition to wild action, the supporting cast is surprisingly strong. In addition to Knight, Squire is another interesting character that reminded me a lot of Robin without being a ripoff. I am interested in seeing where this story leads without having much knowledge of the series getting into it. I am curious about how Batman got to this point and excited to see Tom and Andy’s take on these heroes and villains. The issue is dynamic, has a lot of energy, and doesn’t feel like it's written with a Trade Paperback in mind. In Short: Sometimes a comic just work and Batman: The Detective #1 is one of them. This issue was thrilling and so satisfying for a Batman fan like myself. My only disappointment is that it's a limited series. I could read this team on Batman forever.

Nice to see an extra-sized 26 page story for the standard price of $3.99. Pretty rare! The credits are unremarkable on the cover, but the inside credits name Kubert before Taylor. I wonder if that will be true with each issue, and besides it being atypical, whether it has any significance.

I love how this is written from the perspective of Batman from the future one who is older and a bit slower it gives this book a uniqueness. I am a big fan of both Tom Taylor and Andy kubert's so I had high hopes for this one and it delivered. I am looking forward to issue two

I was a bit skeptical to get this, but then most Bat Mini-series and specials have been major let-downs of late. But I think one thing that appeals about this is that it's a break from the umpteenth "Bold new direction" DC has taken Batman in over the last 2 decades. Not to mention a good trip from Gotham is just what he and we all could use. It's also the start of a pretty interesting mystery. Who or what is Equilibrium? And who is behind it all? And most importantly, what is their grudge with Batman rooted in? It should be interesting to see it develop. All I ask is it stay on schedule. I've seen too many mini-series get thrown off schedule over the last few years and that causes a major decline in interest. By the time it resumes we d on't care as much. I don't want to see that happen with this one. I expect to be reading its conclusion in September 2021, not April 2022. more

This horrible tragedy sends a very personal and deadly message to the caped crusader. This horrific tragedy and message will make Batman leave his normal jurisdiction in Gotham City, to Europe in order to investigate the link of his role in the incident. This was a great start to this mini-series as the premise of this story really lives up to the name of its title. As Batman investigates this heinous crime, he will encounter new adversaries as well as old friends. Tom Taylor has set the stage with this opening issue that contains a great deal of suspense and action. Andy Kubert is one of the best artists in the industry and his artwork is definitely highlighted with this first issue. I enjoy the new look for Batman that we have in this mini-series, as we see him donning a badass trench coat which gives me old school detective vibes. This mini-series is definitely worth a read and I look forward to the next issue! Not a Tom Taylor fan, but this seemed pretty void of his 'isms'. The internal dialogue was very reminiscent of Frank Miller's Batman voice; then again we're also getting an older, more hardened version of the Caped Crusader. Return of Beryl was great, and the new Squire doesn't seem too forced. Gentleman Ghost was also fun. Kubert's art was fantastic as always. Pretty good; will be picking up the next issue.

The main idea for the book isn't bad, it's pretty interesting actually but until the last page the book felt like a bore. It's probably Tom Taylor's storytelling that I always find very cliche and the fact that his characters sound the same in all his books. I'm not a huge fan of Kubert's art but here he was really good.

Taken as an Elseworlds or What If story I think Taylor is off to an ok start. If its more lead up to Future State I will lose interest very quickly. I actually enjoy Kuberts art so I'm always happy to see it.

The idea is good. A group that hunts the people Batman has saved can work in the hands of a man like Taylor. We know the story takes place in the UK and Batman talks about Costantine, can he show up? I liked the two characters that Taylor created in this issue. Andy Kubert's art is hard to talk about, in one page it's amazing, on the next is bad. Not consistent at all.
