I'm pretty hyped to see how further this develops, this arc is in uncharted territory for the landscape of Gotham as a whole. Bruce is still super sensitive after Alfred and now people won't let him build the place up. He's made to many lifelong enemies. Like any story involving a villain who somehow knows every step, there is certainly some convenient plotting going on. This is Batman though, and a fun action-adventure title at that, so it's hard to dismiss it for something so conventional in a series like this. Tynion's first story is ramping things up to it's conclusion and there are plenty of hanging threads still around that an occasional reveal is a welcome sight. There is a ton of action in this book and the writing just has a lot of heart in it. The art team has quite a few artists in it this time around but you can tell that they all really put a ton of effort into this book as it has some of the best art in the comic book industry today. "Their Dark Designs" is a story that has gotten better with each passing chapter. The Designer now being a fully realized villain has helped tremendously in the improvement of "Their Dark Designs." Because of that James Tynion begins paying off the character development for everyone involved in this story, making Batman #91 the best chapter of this storyline thus far. Read Full Review

Yes, I did just spend my one chance reviewing the mainline Batman comic to be negative " but I promise my intentions are constructive! I like this book " genuinely like it " and want to see it keep momentum, and to see it improve as it continues. While Tynion's Justice League could get a bit exhausting from the constant high stakes, I'm hoping he can take the lessons he learned from that book and apply them here: if it pays off, we might have something special on our hands. Batman#91 is weakened by having the Designer be the main villain. He is broadly written and his motivations and methods are still vague. Unless Tynion is planning on paying off plots next issue, it seems like “Their Dark Designs” will be regulated as forgettable in a few years. Read Full Review

Batman #91 was a weak entry in the Their Dark Design story line. I don't see the need to rush it and it might be worth going monthly to allow the artists to relax and not rush to meet deadlines. Sadly this issue falls flat and hopefully with the hype of upcoming books they don't suffer the same fate. Read Full Review

What a great issue! This is what I've been wanting from the Tynion run from the beginning. Action, great characterisation for several characters and just great work all around. Tynion is getting a better grip on Bruce's individual voice and Selena's. His Joker is terrifying in the best way, and Catwoman acted far more like Catwoman. The art was great too, Jiminez and Albuquerque did excellent work.

We had Catwoman explain what happened in the room with The Designer between her, Penguin, and the Riddler, but Joker went in after them, so we didn't get his story. Until now. After a pretty bland issue, we get an issue full of action and excitement. The issue starts with The Joker explaining to a bartender what happened in the last issue, like a recap, except that this time it was from his point of view and it was written like it was a joke, it was pretty great. Tynion really knows how to write The Joker. The rest of the issue is split-up into two parts: Batman fighting with Deathstroke and Catwoman escaping from The Riddler's hideout with Harley Quinn. The fight between Batman and Deathstroke was, just as you'd expect, awesome. I think Tynion nailed Batman's dialogue in this issue (including the inner monologue). Also, the way it ended was exciting. I mean, Batman teaming-up with Deathstroke to fight The Riddler and his tricks sounds cool as hell to me. On the other side, we have Catwoman and Harley Quinn, trying to escape after getting ambushed by the Designer. It was cool and I enjoyed the dynamics between Catwoman and Harley and the way it ended was great. So overall, a pretty damn good issue. more

Prelude: I've been loving Tynion's Batman and as we head towards Joker War, let's see how the series goes. The Good: I rather like Joker's opening monologue. Jimenez's art. Man it's just so great. Bruce's reaching out to Slade was really well done and a great insight into his mind. The Bad: Nothing. Conclusion: While there is a lot of things I don't have a strong opinion about, this is still a great issue.

This story is washing out the bad taste in my mouth left by "City of Bane." The mystery of the Designer extends beyond "Who is he?" It also makes us wonder what his plans were for 4 of Batman's oldest foes and what really happened in his meeting with the Joker. It's good to see Tynion do a story with him. I felt deprived of that when he left Detective Comics. And while we are all saddened by the death of Alfred and anticipate the next "Big event" that will bring him back, as long as we're getting good stories with as little of Damian as possible (I Loathe that brat) I think the Bat-books will be continue doing fine.

Tynion's run is gaining momentum every month. Contrary to Tom King, he wants to tell an actual story, and does exactly that, one issue at a time. And what did he serve us this time? Plenty of action from two different points of view - Batman's as well as Catwoman's. I like it, as well as how Deathstroke and Harley are used as sort of contrasting figures for each of the two protagonists, allowing them to expose some plot in more natural way. I like it, and I hope high hopes for what's to come, because I'm familiar with Tynion's team building style he used in Detective Comics and Jutice League Dark. He knows how to execute his ideas and make them surprising, out of the box. Definitely recommend this issue - if you dropped Batman comics due t o King's awful writing, fear no more - here's something that may capture your attention again. more

"There's a kind of... music to it" Another good Bat-issue from Tynion. He may not be breaking any new grounds, but he definitely makes a well crafted, entertaining story. A story that gets told with the help of three talented artists in this issue. Jimenez gives a very creepy and disturbing rendition of the Joker, one panel in particular. Albuquerque delivers some nice action and I like his Deathstroke's ninja-esque look. And Pagulayan draws a really pretty Harley Quinn. As for the writing. Tynion is a good writer, even if he tends to get a bit wordy at times. He writes a very entertaining Joker, a part mobster and a part psychotic killer. He writes a smart Deathstroke that uses Dark Knight's predictability against him and his bant er between Selina and Harley is fun to read. And thank Whoever that Eddie finally put some pants on. more

sstep down from the last issue mainly because of the shifting art, i found myself distracted many times because the art changed between like 3 or 4 artists. Jorge Jimenez said he is gonna draw all of Joker War, but that seems a little unlikely if he couldn't get this issue out on time. Otherwise, just more of the same really, a little more revelations but nothing game changing yet

This issue wasn’t bad, but I am not really hyped for this story either. It’s nice to see the plot being built up& the villains actually playing a part in this& not just being reduced to canon fodder. However Harley was pointless in this issue, so she is apparently just there, because she gets forced into anything these days. Batman fighting Deathstroke was the best part here. So you don’t miss much, if you skip this, but it’s ok to read.

Apparently, people liked this issue more than I did. The art, again, is great. And I appreciate the fact that Selina hatches a plan on her own, and is affiliated with Batman, but not a mere soldier. Basically, Harley is helping Selina penetrate Riddler's lair. They talk. In this latest version of the DC universe, Harley doesn't know who Selina is and associates her kitten with a whip act with "naughty" librarians. OK. Batman fights Deathstroke and pleads with him to give up his contract because Batman MUST save Gotham's nine million souls. (Boy, the vanity and ego of that statement bothers me. I know it's supposed to show Bruce's state of mental well being, but it's not a nice look and I want my Batman sane. But that's me.) Selina says she bobby-trapped Riddler lair, but then Riddler appears and says he's still in play. Selina tell Harley she worked out a plan to steal the biggest fortune and will just have to steal it before the Designer does. Nice. This issue twice shows how smart she is. First she reveals when she visited the Riddler, she rigged his gear so she could act, then she is taking the bull by the horn and will steal Bruce's fortune first. Again, nice. But Batman fighting Deathstroke is just filler. Bruce's whole plan is to talk Slade out his contract? That's not how Slade works. So great art and great Catwoman. Tynion is actually giving a sense of character and agency. She goes along with Bruce but does it her way. So much better than King, who basically said Meow and followed Bruce around like a puppy. Most uncat-like. So a 5. Or I could be wrong. more
