Batgirl #38

This is an okay issue. I enjoyed everything with Babs. A lot of the secret identity stuff was fun. I love that she made a new costume and the fight with Killer Moth was cool. But the Terrible Trio feel like intrusions. Every scene with them was a kind of dull and a little unnecessary. The book feels clunky as a result despite its genuinely fun moments. Read Full Review

Castellucci and Carmine Di Giandomenico are dragging Batgirl through some really, really rough times to show relentless heroism. With any luck, the teams tenure with the character will last long enough to see her rise triumphant out of the disheveled mess of her life in the first couple of issues of their time with her. Carmine Di Giandomenico is the perfect artist on this book. I just love his style. He makes every page one that is incredibly exciting. Matched with the story, it's a great and comfortable fit. Jason Bard referring to Batgirl as a "menace" may be a little too on the money, but this run does seem to have a very good take on Barbara Gordon " at least in the present day. Read Full Review

Barbara recovers from getting beaten dowm by KillerMoth and prepares for revenge. Elsewhere, Oracle is back as an independententity and she's already downloading mainframes or whatever. A middling issue ofsowing seeds that will pay off later. Read Full Review

Ultimately, this issue really shines in the sequences that have Barbara at the absolute center, so it will be interesting to see if that carries through to future issues. Read Full Review

The idea behind this story is good, but the issue spends too much time on secondary characters. The art is detailed and flows well, with interesting color effects and varied, effective lettering techniques. It's not one of the series' best outings, but it's decent. I recommend reading it unless the Terrible Trio drive you up a tree. Read Full Review

A couple things: 1. Why back to the purple costume? Don't get me wrong I like it, but she literally just changed costumes and I liked the new one. Was it because it is too sexualized? 2. The dialogue was pretty dumb in parts and Oracle's AI seems kind of primitive as far as communication goes. Other than that I generally am liking this so far.

On the one hand I find the new Oracle interesting, but on the other hand I wish we would get the Pre52 Oracle back. DC really ruined a great character by turning Barbara into Batgirl again. I‘m kind of tired of Year of the Villains too, it just gets boring& is a mere copy of Underworld Unleashed from the 90ies without the good stories. So nothing that special happens in this issue. Jason Bard is annoying as always& Batgirl is still fighting Killer Moth.

This evil AI is poorly written, there's no doubt about that. Even if you disregard the reality of how something like Oracle would work. Just in the realm of Sci-Fi, it's poorly done. The dialogue in this issue was surprisingly bad. There was more than once where I had to re-read panels to understand what the writer meant. That's Bendis levels right there. The story itself is... fine. I don't care enough about anything that's happening. Maybe make the politician corrupt or something, idk. I thought Batgirl was about to switch back to the old costume completely, but luckily they merged the costumes and did away with the garish purple, and made it look less like Barbie's First Costume. So I'm okay with it... Unless the next artist accentuates the bad aesthetic the purple costume had. Overall, it's a Batgirl issue. Dull. more
