Batgirl #37

Its pretty rare when one creative team can take over for another this smoothly. Writer Mairghread Scott had done such a good job with her run aided as she was by artist Paul Pelletier. They had a very satisfying end to their run last issue. Castellucci and Di Giandomenico take over this issue and take over without the usual sort of awkward disappointment and stiff acclimation that has to occur with a new art team. Batgirl has become one of my favorite books. It's not entirely beholden to decades of continuity the way Batman is. Much of that has to with Batman's marketability in other media, but Batgirl's modest success in that area leaves her free to do as she pleases. Read Full Review

Carmine Di Giandomenico's art brings a bit of new life into the issue as well, with the fight scenes between Barbara and Killer Moth rendered in a way that's equal parts stylish, tasteful, and a little cartoony. Read Full Review

While Castellucci tackles all of this content well, it does feel like a lot for one issue. It could have definitely been split into two, but as I said previously, DC wants their event to kick off and everything needs to happen in specific order with specific timing or things will get thrown off. Hopefully that means next issue will be able to either split up or more effectively combine these three plots. Read Full Review

This is a really good issue. The fight between Batgirl and Killer Moth is a lot of fun with good dialogue. Its well paced and interesting. The art is solid. Im unsure about the motivations of Vulture and Fox but other than that, this is an enjoyable issue. Read Full Review

The subplot involving Jason Bard apparently developing feelings for Barbara".pass, given the significant age gap and just how many times he's screwed over her family. It's not a pairing I'm particularly interested in. But as a first issue, Batgirl #37 is showing some good characterization for its lead character, so there's promise here. Read Full Review

While I found the art lacking during the action of this book and want to know more about our character receiving Lex's offer.... or how that character is even a thing, I did enjoy myself during Cecil Castellucci's first issue of Batgirl and enjoy that she's easing us into her run by showing us the familiar.  There's definitely some room for improvement here, but overall I look forward to see where this series goes for this writer's run. This issue has set in motion a whole new story with some rather interesting implications. I really want to see where Castellucci goes with this arc. That ending was an absolutely mind melting moment. I had to re-read it about 3 times before everything that was happening properly sunk in. I think there is some promise here. Castellucci and Di Giandomenico step into Batgirl with some interesting ideas, but an overall poor execution. The plot is something I'm interested in, and I love the idea of Oracle becoming a sentient, artificial intelligence, but I can't say I have confidence in this creative team to deliver. The dialogue comes off as juvenile, while the script and art both contain rough transitions. Castellucci and Di Giandomenico appear to be on different pages half of the time, and that's never a good sign. Read Full Review

Cecil Castellucci's tenure asBatgirl scribe unfortunately doesn't get off to a good start, whether it's the blatant disregard for recent events, a padded script, a weak plot, or the lackluster art. After Female Furies Castellucci thankfully does a better job with Batgirl ( at least in the first issue). We are seeing the trio from the last issues, Batgirl fighting Killer Moth& Jason Bard hanging out with Bea. I’m wondering, if that’s Bea from Nightwing run, since her boyfriend is called Ric as well. The ending was quite promising too, but I’m not sure what to think of the Oracle idea yet. However what is really sad, that this issue confirms, that another cool Pre52 story never happened: Underworld Unleashed. Year of The Villains basically copied the entire idea from that event & mixed it with a crisis story, but Underworld Unleashed sure is the better& more entertaining event so far. Castellucci gets Killer Moth‘s character b y portraying him as a villain, who is trying to prove that he is worthy of getting an offer from Lex, but turning him into Charaxes during Underworld Unleashed gave his character a certain tragedy, that is lost in New52/ Rebirth timeline. That is really sad. The art is good as well. Overall good issue, but DC isn’t very creative for just repeating old storylines. more

Castelluci is actually a pretty good writer, despite what Female Furies would suggest. I enjoyed her Shade the Changing Girl.

Cecil Castelluci takes over the writing with this issue, and she offers a refreshingly fun and genuine Batgirl character in action against a surprisingly upgraded Killer Moth. We're just getting started, but it looks like groundwork is being laid for a nice long run as secondary characters are given a little time to breath and grow. Art is solid. I especially enjoyed the action scenes. The future is bright for Batgirl.

Bleh. At least it's not Female Furies bad. The Oracle thing looks like it'll be another Technology Bad story, so I'm not too interested in that. The stuff with Jason Bard is also completely throwaway to me. I don't care about their budding romance. The Killer Moth stuff was probably the best part of the issue, but that was just a thing that happened.
