Action Comics #1011

Action Comic #1011 does what this storyline struggled to do in the beginning- it sets up Leviathan as a powerful and mysterious organization, but one whose plans are way more interesting than they seemed at the beginning. Bendis doesnt waste any page real estate in this one, just dropping more bombs, whetting interest in his upcoming Event Leviathan. That said, event set-up has always been Bendis strong suit, and there is no guarantee that hell be able to keep that up in the upcoming book, but here he turns in an exciting story that leaves readers begging for more. Epting's art was fantastic, and Anderson's colors really compliment his style. The Superman suit looks vibrant in every issue, and this is no exception. Manapul's variant cover featuring Superman, Lois, and Jimmy was also beautiful. One of the things that I have liked a great deal about Leviathan Rises is seeing the trio work together again. I'm warming slowly to this Superman crime-noir event involving Leviathan. Superman appears to be out of his element and struggling to keep pace with Lois as she uncovers the power-players involved. Will Superman play an integral role? More importantly, will Lois unravel the masterminds behind this large criminal organization? We will see. Is "Leviathan Rising" coming to fruition and an end? I have no idea. Bendis could keep this going for months, adding nostalgic figures from all over the DC universe. As long as Epting draws the hell out of this comic and Bendis keeps up the pithy dialogue, I'll likely enjoy it all the way up to the end. Read Full Review

While the art remains one of the highlights of this series for me, the story is presented in a way that makes you want to think it's really big, while not really doing much to progress what our heroes are doing and for the most part, we're really not all that further along than where were left off last issue besides for Lois having a new story to write.  There's some fun to be had, but not enough story to really keep me as hyped as I want to be. VerdictBendis is playing the long game with "Leviathan Rising" and despite some nice details in Action Comics #1011, the apparent direction of the arc is uninspired. It is proving to be both too long and a "game." Referencing the weakest elements of his run on Action so far are not helping. Epting's work is still nice, but the pretty pictures can only elevate the story so much. More imposing questions than answers but in a good way. That's exactly what 'Leviathan Rising' is about in the first place. Leviathan orchestrated a series of events, shown what it can do, now it's about time the mystery revealed itself. Leviathan crushes Superman on the cover, absolutely brilliant. The whole thing feels more like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, political, unique, grounded and does a lot of things better. I can say for sure Bendis has completely won me over, I can't wait for Event Leviathan.

Great lead up to the Leviathan story arc! The deep intel spy versions of Clark and Lois were also good to see. The introduction of Manhunter could have been less sudden though.

I have a few problems to do with Bendis' lack of knowledge of DC characters, but overall this was good and I like seeing Kate Spencer back.

"-Look! Up in the... - Don't." Well, that was an entertaining issue. I really enjoyed it. Kate Spencer seems to have traded Seatle for Metropolis, the Leviathan mystery gets more and more interesting (and fun), the dialogue is good (with some really funny lines), Superman is just all around great guy and Steve Epting keeps drawing him with a really big nose. But other than the big supporting cast and Lois being very involved in the plot, there is one other thing that Bendis is doing here that I like. Compared to all the Kings and Batmans and their depressing stuff, and sad and mopey Flash (as he was the last time I read his book) Bendis, both in Action Comics and in Superman, is keeping s*it light. And I'm just really gl ad that he does that. more

I thought this was an improvement. Decent issue except for Jimmy Olsen’s dialogue and that story has progressed so slowly.

While the art wasn’t so bad, the dialogue seemed a bit funky. Not much of an expert of Jimmy but hope he always didn’t sound like this! He’s one of the annoying parts of the book. Feel like Bendis doesn’t know anything about Spyral.

He doesn’t, he did not even get the Kate Kane who runs the organization right. I doubt he cares though, since consistency in continuity/portrayals is not a concern of his.

I'm no expert but as far as I can tell everything here that was about Spyral and Leviathan tracks with everything I remeber from Grayson, so the continuity seems fine. To be honest I never noticed any jarring continuity errors made by Bendis, other than red-haired Barry Allen. But that feled more like an colloring error.

Not when what it purports to rely on is the dismantling said organizations and their leadership. It can place a character unrelated to everything in a position they should not be in and alter their contributions to it.

It's just a minor thing, like Titans being on Earth as fish monsters during Drowned Earth, when in their own book they were in space at the exact same time. With fewer gills and fins.

This issue makes par. Not unreadable, not great, middle-of-the road fare. For what is supposed to be the ending to the set-up of this summer’s “World Changing” event it is supremely underwhelming. It’s a forgettable issue, as there are no standout moments, but by the same token there are no egregious faults in characterization, logic, or story. I could argue Waller was ridiculous when she broke out of the Fortress of Solitude as SHE was the one who turned to Superman for help and now seems to be backing away from that choice. Similarly it’s odd one of the top agents of Spyral would so readily trust a journalist with “all of the information”, especially one who was pretending to be a member of his organisation (because a double agent would never do that). But in the grand scheme of things these actions can be made to fit the story and when this writer has railroaded entire plots just for a quip or some othet terrible payoff they seem minor in scale. To me, this fails to deliver in generating hype for “Event Leviathan” which seems more likely to end up like the various Marvel Events bendis led, with all of the impact of a match in a fully lit room. more

There was one Huntress line here about Talia and I legitimately cannot tell whether it's a typo or not. That's how much the dialogue has worsened. The story itself sure does exist, but it's incredibly slow and I'm completely underwhelmed by all of this.
