comics from the 60s usually suck because they have an excess of dialogue and narrator lines, killing the whole dynamic. and this issue is no exception.

Comics from the 60s are... interesting. I do think Stan Lee was a genius for creating characters but, damn, man didn't know how to develop them properly lol.

Amazing Spider-Man #50

|

i'll tell you why this is my favorite spider-man issue so far: it doesn't focus on spider-man, it's all about peter. i honestly don't care who'll be the "villain of the week" or whatever, i care about peter being happy, being able to pay his bills, to go out with gwen, to enjoy being young, to take care of aunt may... and this issue gave me everything i could ask. the parts where spidey is truly featured aren't here to tell a silly and generic story like i've seen before in previous issues. this is about peter understanding his duty, remembering the oath he made to uncle ben. it's about being a hero and doing what's right.

Batman Year One
September 10, 2021
|
|
Batman definitive origin, "Year One" sets the whole scenario that would later be beautifully explored in "The Long Halloween" and "Dark Victory". It's a good comic with a nice script and a wonderful visual art. A must-read for anyone into comics.

Batman: Dark Victory Collected
September 10, 2021
|
|
Even better than its antecessor, "Dark Victory" ends the first part of Bruce Wayne journey as Batman, bringing closure to a lot of the characters first introduced in "Year One". The plot-twist is really good, the whole storyline and mistery around the Hang Man is well build. And also - Dick Grayson! Yes.

Batman: The Killing Joke #1 |

i know that everyone LOVES the killing joke, but i don't think it's THAT good... i had high expectations before reading and already knew what happened with barbara, gordon etc, but for me it was utterly disrespectful to barbs character. she's used only as a plot device to motivate bruce's crusade, she doesn't have a storyline or nothing - she is just a victim, with a shallow development and too little personality. i respect the fact that this is one of the most important batman stories because it shows how mad joker is, but i can't ignore the fact that the lead female character of the batfamily, and one of the leading ladies of the dc universe, is here only to be shot and mistreated.
joker's background was interesting - i've seen better origin stories, but this is the blueprint. the art is really good too.
also, quoting gail simone: "Both (Barbara and Bruce) had their backs broken [Batman broke his in a dramatic Batcave confrontation with the villain Bane; Batgirl broke hers when she was ambushed in her home and shot in the spine by the Joker, never given a chance to fight]. Less than a year later, Batman was fine. Batgirl-now named Oracle-was in a wheelchair and remained so for many years."
and last, but not least - Jeffrey A. Brown noted The Killing Joke as an example of the "relatively unequal violence [female characters] are subjected to" in the major DC/Marvel Comics industry. While male characters may be critically injured or killed, they are more than likely to be returned to their original conception, while "women on the other hand, are more likely to be casually, but irreparably, wounded such as when Barbara Gordon's (the original Batgirl) spine was shattered by the Joker just for fun and has been restricted to a wheelchair for over a decade now"

Fantastic Four Vol. 1: Fourever
December 12, 2020
|
|
Marvel's primordial family comeback destroys epic expectations after Jonathan Hickman's farewell saga Secret Wars. Despite the phenomenal artistry, Slott makes the same mistakes seen in his run on Spider-Man, always working on sameness and not having the courage to make drastic changes in the status quo. The dialogues are superficial, depending on the charisma of the characters to captivate the reader. The lack of development in the antagonist and around elements of science fiction are also problems.

i usually don't like this kind of comics where the story is ""basic"" and with beginning and end in the same issue - although the bigger arc continues in future magazines -, but this is a very fun one with a nice mystery and resolution.
